With significant improvements in the radio interface, enabling a lower data access cost per megabyte as well as several potentially important new services, 3G LTE could have a decisive advantage over alternative wireless technologies that currently compete with 3GPP technologies. 3G LTE provides a cost-efficient way to deliver the most popular services to large numbers of people, with a technology that is directly based on existing 2G and 3G systems. This paper analyzes the economics of 3G LTE for a system architecture evolution (SAE) network. This starts with examining the drivers for broadcasting and mobility convergence, which is followed by a description of the business case for the 3G LTE technology and its SAE network structure. Concluding the paper is a techno-economic analysis for a 3G LTE operator with its own 3G network. The analysis is carried out by the construction of a techno-economic simulation model, which looks at a large Western European type country from 2010 to 2019. Two different cases are taken into account: a fixed use case, which is similar to that of wireless DSL, and a mobile use case, which is similar to that of 3G cellular data. The respective addressable markets arc assumed to be one million and ten million users. For these two cases, the total costs of building and operating the SAE network arc approximately 120 million and 1.9 billion euros. For the lived case, an ARPU of 15 euros per month is sufficient for breakeven; for the mobile case, an ARPU of 10 euros.","PeriodicalId":442288,"journal":{"name":"2007 6th Conference on Telecommunication Techno-Economics","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121888363","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, ad hoc networks have the potential to provide a free, non-operator controlled means of mobile communication. On the other hand, they also provide a low cost alternative to extend the reach of current wireless access networks. In this paper, the use of ad hoc networks for wireless Internet access is discussed. An overview of some proposed technical architectures and their challenges is provided. Also business models enabling the use of ad hoc networks and the challenges associated with the models arc considered.","PeriodicalId":442288,"journal":{"name":"2007 6th Conference on Telecommunication Techno-Economics","volume":"372 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124657165","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

FMC is expected to offer benefits for network and service operators as well as end-users. Integrated operators (who own both fixed and mobile networks), are keen to exploit these benefits in order to save costs and generate new revenues. However, such operators are also faced with the challenge of identifying an appropriate roadmap for FMC migration in order to prevent substitution effects or conflict of interest among their own fixed and network operations. In this paper, we present results and analysis of an FMC migration case study for an integrated operator in a Western European market. The additional benefits achieved by the operator are quantified, with suggestions for migration strategies. Results of the study show that an integrated operator can benefit from cost savings, customer retention and prevent revenue erosion by migrating to FMC.","PeriodicalId":442288,"journal":{"name":"2007 6th Conference on Telecommunication Techno-Economics","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131192872","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The technology enablers are advertising of access and service offers, multi-radio access, network selection and roaming support, negotiation of terms and conditions for attachment to networks. In this paper, we investigate the additional load on users and network resources for establishment and management of multiple network connections and business relations. The administrative load is analyzed using commercial uses cases and scenarios with a number of available networks, service providers and payment and ID providers. The signaling load for multiple attachment and negotiation procedures is estimated by modeling signaling sequences for a WLAN system enabled with AN technology. The signaling load is computed for varying numbers of users and for users with varying \"willingness to evaluate and negotiate offers\". The results show that the most important parameters are the number of attachment attempts per time unit. In the investigated scenarios, the relative load of business related signaling is 0.1 -1.0 % of the transferred user data. Although a large of number of different networks may be used, the number of business agreements and network connections that need to be handled simultaneously will be quite low.","PeriodicalId":442288,"journal":{"name":"2007 6th Conference on Telecommunication Techno-Economics","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125225163","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The analysis is based on the results from the TONIC tool which takes into account network topology, area characteristics, service demand and price evolution forecasting and calculates key economic figures-of-merits. The results reveal that FSO technology could provide a viable alternative in cases where the existing duct availability is limited and scenarios with either FTTH or FFTC have negative or less favourable business prospects.","PeriodicalId":442288,"journal":{"name":"2007 6th Conference on Telecommunication Techno-Economics","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131166701","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the growing complexity and management workload of home systems is leading to degrading usability. In this paper, we discuss the business dynamics of the digital home environment. We suggest that lower usability will slow down the adoption of digital services, and therefore we present a novel view that focuses the attention on management of digital homes. We explain the management hierarchy of the home environment, and construct four scenarios that describe the possible directions of evolution. Throughout the paper, we pay special attention to broadband access operators, since we consider them strong candidates for becoming management service providers. Therefore, we present possible management-related business models that broadband access operators could use when formulating their business strategies. Our analysis shows that management service provision is an important business driver.","PeriodicalId":442288,"journal":{"name":"2007 6th Conference on Telecommunication Techno-Economics","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114782449","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The newly develop handset-based research platform was utilized in the analysis. A typical Finnish panelist spends 33 minutes / day with smartphonc. Most of this time is allocated on voice calls (33%) and messaging (24%). Younger people and men arc still the most active users of smartphoncs. The Finnish market has developed particularly in the use of packet data and person-to-person services. Handset bundling has indirectly driven these trends because more data, voice and SMS pricing plans have emerged in the market. Handset bundling reflects in the increased use of operator-specific clients, too. ARPU levels correlate clearly with data, voice and SMS service usage, whereas no clear correlation between ARPU and offline service usage exists. People still consider the pricing and technical implementation (configuration) of the mobile Internet and email as bottlenecks for mobile Internet usage. WLAN traffic represents already a significant share of aggregated traffic volume, though the number of VVLAN-capable phones in the panel is small. In general data services are evolving towards multimedia and infotainment, getting closer to the fixed Internet. Multimedia is actively explored, particularly smartphonc camera. Indicative questionnaire results suggest that mobile e-commcrce might soon hit the mass-market domain.","PeriodicalId":442288,"journal":{"name":"2007 6th Conference on Telecommunication Techno-Economics","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114888789","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
