Involutional changes in the human body concern all organs and systems. Multiple morbidities, to a considerable extent, contribute to the limitation of motor fitness. Recently, a change has been noted in the age of patients hospitalized in rehabilitation departments. The majority of these patients are aged over 60, and are admitted due to aggravation of polyarticular pain, arterial hypertension, problems with knee or hip joints (degeneration, pain), ischemic heart disease, or degenerative polyarthritis. Hospitalization in the rehabilitation department contributes to the improvement in their state of health. Aim of the research: The objective of the study was to analyse the causes of hospitalization and functional fitness of patients hospitalized in the Rehabilitation Department at the Regional Polyclinical Hospital in Kielce. Material and methods: The study included 102 patients of the Rehabilitation Department at the Regional Polyclinical Hospital in Kielce, 79 female and 23 male, mean age 72.6. Results: The majority of patients (74%) were admitted to the department with the diagnosis of aggravation of polyarticular pain, followed by arterial hypertension (as many as 64%), problems concerning knee and hip joints (degeneration, pain), ischemic heart disease, and polyarticular changes. Conclusions: Patients aged over 60 comprised the largest group in the study, and the dominant causes of hospitalization were aggravation of pain and arterial hypertension.","PeriodicalId":44061,"journal":{"name":"Medical Studies-Studia Medyczne","volume":"6 32 1","pages":"4-9"},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2016-04-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89746939","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Lack of physical activity and poor nutrition are two factors that suport each other in a negative way and result in an increasing number of obese people. Irregular nutrition is often closely related to irregular academic life. Aim of the research: The objective of this research is to find out how female students perceive health – how they understand and define it. Another objective is to determine whether nurses-to-be and psychiatrists-to-be perceive health differently than other students and whether their health-esteem is backed with their free-time physical activity and regular nutrition. It is crucial to find out what factors, according to the research, have the biggest influence on people’s health. Material and methods: The research involved 180 female students of full-time courses at the Jan Kochanowski University in Kielce: 98 female students of the Health Sciences Faculty and 82 female students of other faculties. The method of a diagnostic survey and a questionnaire were used in the research. Results: The female students perceived health as a quality, well-being, an absence of disease; and for female nursing students health was not only the absence of disease or disability but also biopsychosocial well-being. The most important factors that influence the health condition are physical activity and nutrition. A high evaluation does not correspond to taking care of one’s health. Fewer than 8% of the female students practised sport in their free time and ate regularly. More than a half neither did sport nor ate regularly (Pearson’s contingency coefficient C reaches a value of 0.1). Conclusions: The female nursing students, contrary to the female students of other faculties, perceive health in the same way as the World Health Organisation. Regardless of faculty, physical activity and regular nutrition are considered to be the most important factors influencing our well-being. A high health-esteem among the researched students is not backed with their healthy lifestyles.","PeriodicalId":44061,"journal":{"name":"Medical Studies-Studia Medyczne","volume":"1 1","pages":"194-199"},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2015-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84256521","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to the unfavourable health consequences of abnormal body weight gains in expectant mothers studies of the factors that determine the amount of these gains are important. Aim of the research: Evaluation of the relationship between health behaviours in pregnancy, nutritional status before pregnancy, selected socio-demographic factors, and gestational weight gain. Material and methods: The investigation included 274 women. Using a questionnaire, information was collected pertaining to the place of residence, age, body height and weight, cigarette smoking, and eating habits during pregnancy. The total weight gain during pregnancy was calculated as the difference between perinatal weight and pre-pregnancy body weight. Gestational weight gains were classified as low, recommended, or high. Results: Increased risk of high weight gain was associated with the consumption of alcoholic beverages (odds ratio (OR) = 2.82), especially beer (OR = 2.72), high consumption of products supplying proteins of animal origin (OR = 2.87), and overweight before pregnancy (OR = 3.37), as well as the delivery being the mother’s first, compared to the third and subsequent childbirth (OR = 4.17). Conclusions: This study indicates that there is a need for health education among females at reproductive age in order to reduce excess weight before conception, and promotion of adequate health behaviours in pregnancy, which would allow the maintenance of normal weight gain during this period.","PeriodicalId":44061,"journal":{"name":"Medical Studies-Studia Medyczne","volume":"1 1","pages":"161-167"},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2015-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85328181","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is a common reason for seeking advice from an orthopaedist. This problem is characterised by chronic pain in the anterior part of one or both knees. This issue often affects women, especially at a young age. The effect of this ailment is deterioration of the quality of life. This dysfunction significantly reduces abilities, and often prevents the performance of daily activities. Pain usually occurs during physical activity, but may also be accompanied by prolonged immobilisation of the knee joint. In defining the type of patellofemoral instability, orthopaedists use magnetic resonance imaging, arthroscopy, ultrasonography, and X-ray examination. A relatively effective method of treatment of pain in the patellofemoral joint is through isometric exercises of the quadriceps. They increase the strength of the quadriceps femoris muscle and reduce instability in the patellofemoral joint. Aim of the research: To evaluate the effectiveness of isometric exercises of the quadriceps muscle on young female patients with anterior knee pain. Material and methods: The study involved 30 women aged 13–44 years (mean age: 26.8 years), who had been diagnosed with pain in the front of the knee. Results and conclusions: Isometric exercises of the quadriceps muscle are an effective method of reducing anterior knee pain. Isometric exercises have a beneficial influence on improving physical activity, including performing basic activities of daily living. Student’s t distribution showed, that isometric exercises of the quadriceps muscle reduce pain at the front of the knee. Kruskal-Wallis test confirmed a significant reduction of anterior knee pain.","PeriodicalId":44061,"journal":{"name":"Medical Studies-Studia Medyczne","volume":"26 1","pages":"183-186"},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2015-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89165150","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Patients with multiple sclerosis suffer from a number of symptoms associated with this disease. Aim of the research: To assess the effectiveness of physiotherapy in MS. Material and methods: The study enrolled 25 MS patients aged 27–72 years (including 16 females and 9 males), undergoing 6-week rehabilitation. They were examined twice: before and after rehabilitation. The study used two questionnaires created by the author. Evaluation of the clinical status and disease severity was based on the Kurtzke Expanded Disability Status Scales (EDSS), the Lawton Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL) Scale, and the Multiple Sclerosis Impact Scale (MSIS-29). The results were analysed with Student’s t-test and the chi-square (χ2) test. Results: Statistical analysis showed significant (the level of significance was 0.05) progress in the functional status of the patients after physiotherapy, as evidenced by improved results with respect to the motor efficiency in the Kurtzke Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS), the functional assessment in the Lawton Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL) Scale, and the influence of MS on patients’ daily life in the Multiple Sclerosis Impact Scale (MSIS-29) seen in the majority of the patients, which confirms a positive impact of the therapy. Conclusions: In the study group, comprehensive rehabilitation had a beneficial influence on the improvement of functional status and the level of motor ability. Physiotherapy turned out to be an extremely effective form of symptomatic treatment of MS patients.","PeriodicalId":44061,"journal":{"name":"Medical Studies-Studia Medyczne","volume":"40 1","pages":"168-177"},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2015-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88361479","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

High quality of nursing care should have the same characteristics as the whole healthcare system. Although current healthcare systems focus on best quality medical services, the number of adverse events is increasing. It sometimes happens that a patient suffers injuries not due to his/her illness, but because of poorly organised healthcare. Aim of the research: To assess the influence of adverse events and their identification on nursing care quality and to analyse the correlation between patient safety and adverse events identification and reporting. Material and methods: The research was conducted in hospital wards that have and do not have a Certificate of Quality Management System. In the research, the Hospital Survey on Patient Culture prepared by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality was used as well as the author’s own survey. Results: In the survey, nurses’ activities were evaluated in the context of adverse events identification. As the most common undesirable events, the following were considered: discrepancy connected with organisation and administration (35%), medical equipment (24%), hospital infections (23%), medication administration (22%), doctor’s (20%) and nurse’s (19%) activity, and blood and blood related specimen transfusion (10%). However, these areas were not disastrous. Conclusions: It has been stated that nurses, for fear of disciplinary consequences, are more unwilling to report such events. Therefore, it is essential to introduce legal regulations.","PeriodicalId":44061,"journal":{"name":"Medical Studies-Studia Medyczne","volume":"21 1","pages":"106-114"},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2015-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86321222","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

From one point of view, scientific and technological progress increases the chances of being active in professional life, yet it requires high professional qualifications. Aim of the research: The aim of the study was to investigate the employment character in those workshops. The theme of the research was the assumption that the process of rehabilitation of disabled persons is achieved in a complex social system. Material and methods: A diagnostic survey with the use of a customised questionnaire was carried out in November/December 2013 among 108 persons with disabilities employed in sheltered workshops in the Świetokrzyskie Province. Results: The most common causes of disability among the respondents were the locomotor system, neurological, respiratory, and circulatory diseases. The obstacles in establishing interpersonal contacts would include the fear of negative feedback in their close environment, the lack of knowledge in society about disability, architectural barriers, and appearance. The disabled expected both economic and informative support. Conclusions: The activity of persons with disabilities depends on employment opportunities in the labour market, but also on the candidate’s education, age, and their degree of disability. The sheltered workshops reinforce the sense of economic security and social ties, whereas employment itself brings a particularly appreciated value for this population.
