Commonly, there are several unknown parameters in those problems such as future price, future demand, etc., and this means decision-making support that can handle this uncertainty is needed to calculate an optimal decision.Objectives: This study aimed to propose a newly developed joint decision-making support to solve order allocation planning and inventory optimisation of raw materials in a production system comprising multiple suppliers, products and review times with fuzzy parameters.Method: The model was formulated as a fuzzy expectation-based quadratic programming with the uncertain parameters approached as fuzzy numbers. This was used to handle the fuzzy parameters involved in the problem. A classical optimisation algorithm, the generalised reduced gradient combined with branch-and-bound embedded in LINGO 18.0 was applied to calculate the optimal decision. Numerical experiments were conducted using some randomly generated data with four suppliers, four raw materials and six review times.Results: Results provided the optimal decision for the given problem, that is, the number of raw materials to be ordered from each supplier at each review time, as well as the corresponding number to be stored in the warehouse.Conclusion: The proposed model successfully solved the given problems and thus can be used by decision-makers to solve their order allocation planning and inventory problems.","PeriodicalId":43985,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Transport and Supply Chain Management","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.5,"publicationDate":"2022-09-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75011161","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The country is in a desperate condition, with millions of citizens leaving to reside in neighbouring countries. These Zimbabweans are providing and sending food, necessities and cash to relatives in the country using largely informal humanitarian supply chains (HSCs). The outbreak of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic was disastrous causing more hardship. Objective: This case study explores how informal HSCs played a significant role in the Zimbabwe humanitarian aid initiative and the impact of COVID-19 on these supply chains. Method: A mixed method design was used to collect qualitative data through personal interviews with Zimbabweans in South Africa. Additional quantitative data was obtained from humanitarian reports, Zimbabwe government reports as well as other publications. These were used to present the humanitarian crisis in Zimbabwe and specifically how support was provided through informal HSCs from outside Zimbabwe. Results: Through the case study the devastating effect COVID-19 had on a large component of the food insecure and suffering population of Zimbabwe is vividly illustrated. The closing of national borders prevented any food and other necessities, sent by diaspora from South Africa, reaching relatives. Conclusion: The results of this case study show the effect COVID-19 had on the humanitarian aid from relatives in South Africa. All the aid to Zimbabweans completely stopped for an extended period as these informal HSCs were completely broken because of the COVID-19 pandemic and 2 years later they remain disrupted. © 2022. In addition, National Ports Authority (NPA) charges are 69% and cargo dues 166% above the global benchmark mean. The NPA uses a rate of return (RR) model to calculate tariff increases that are contested by port stakeholders. Objectives: The study aimed to analyse the impact of COVID-19 trade disruptions and examine the associated higher liner freight rates, tariff applications for higher NPA tariffs and reduced investment in port infrastructure. It showed that adjusting the RR model variables can result in reduced tariffs and large cost savings for port users. Method: This study analysed the impact of the pandemic on South Africa’s cargo volumes and freight rates. It critiqued the regulatory asset base, the asset beta, and the tax rate to be applied and calculated the adjustments to these RR model variables using five scenarios for FY2022/2023. Results: The results show a sharp decrease in cargo volumes during COVID-19 lockdowns, and a parallel increase in freight rates. The five-scenario results show how the NPA tariffs could be much lower, calculating a tariff decrease of 5.7% in scenario 4 and a 20% decrease in scenario 5. Conclusion: Amid the global rise of shipping rates and the economic impact of the pandemic on South Africa’s trade, the results show that there is a potential to enhance South Africa’s trade competitiveness through a decrease in NPA-weighted average tariff by 20%. © 2022. The South African online retail environment also encountered different opportunities and last-mile logistics challenges. However, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on online consumer behaviour has received limited attention. Furthermore, limited studies exist which have measured the online buying behaviour of young people, an important online market segment. Objectives: The primary purpose of this study was to determine whether the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic significantly influenced the online shopping behaviour of young people and to provide online retailers and consumer behaviour theorists with a better appreciation of young consumers’ online purchasing needs, which will assist them in developing and effecting appropriate last-mile logistics strategies. Methods: A quantitative research design was used, and empirical data were collected from two non-probability sampling surveys conducted in 2019 (before the COVID-19 pandemic) and in 2020 (during the COVID-19 pandemic) of 461 young people in the Johannesburg area. A self-administered online questionnaire was used to collect the research data. Results: The results indicate that online shopping behaviour either did not change or increased because of the COVID-19 pandemic for most respondents. Young online consumers consider order fulfilment aspects to be more important than the tangible considerations of online retailers. Conclusion: This research study provides a distinct perspective of young people’s perceptions of online shopping and makes a meaningful contribution by identifying the important fulfilment-related service quality expectations of young online customers in South Africa. © 2022. The pandemic affected international travel, global logistics, supplier production and stockpiles at the supply end, which resulted in shortages at retailers and increased prices for basic food items. Objectives: The purpose of this article was to provide insights into and a synthesis of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on food retail supply chain models in South Africa. Method: A general review of both academic and grey literature (including commentaries) was studied to draw insights into the issues of food retail supply chain. This was combined with an examination of websites and annual reports of the major food retailers in South Africa to find their responses to the pandemic related to their supply chains. Results: It was found that the investment in supply chains and local supply development and the technology by the large food retailers in the country have paid off in the ways that they have been able to respond to and contain the shocks of the pandemic and point to the local versus the international when thinking about new supply chain models for the post-COVID-19 world. Conclusion: The insights drawn from this article may be useful in building more resilient food retail supply chains in the South African context. This article charts a way for more focused analyses using empirical data to thresh out more nuanced insights that will benefit the food retail supply chain and create a more resilient food system in South Africa. © 2022. Objectives: The study assessed the current level of 4IR adoption amongst Zimbabwean SMEs, investigated the drivers thereof and analysed the effect of 4IR technologies on SMEs’ SCR amidst the COVID-19-induced disruptions. Method: The study employed a quantitative research approach where data were collected through an online cross-sectional survey of 318 SME owners or managers in Zimbabwe. The logit regression model using the IBM SPSS software was utilised for the main estimation. Results: The study revealed that the adoption of 4IR technology amongst Zimbabwean SMEs is still low owing to high costs and ignorance of some SME owners or managers. However, personal innovativeness, education, information and communication technology (ICT) literacy, security and ICT ease of use were the main drivers for the adoption of 4IR technology. A positive link was established between 4IR adoption and SCR. Conclusion: This study contributes to the nascent literature on fostering SME SCR through the adoption of 4IR technologies by SMEs from developing countries, in particular. The study recommends collective efforts by all relevant stakeholders to raise awareness about 4IR technology and enhance ICT literacy whilst addressing 4IR-enabling infrastructure and internet access costs. © 2022. This attribute highlights the importance of logistics wherein one of the key focus areas pertains to the movement and storage of freight at different geographical scales.Objective: In the light of the importance of theory in research as well as the significance of geographical location in logistics processes, the objective of the paper is to analyse the extent, scope and gaps of theory utilisation in logistics-related research.Method: The paper is based on a systematic literature review approach that encompassed 243 sources. The searches were conducted on the Internet database platforms using keywords such as logistics, logistics activities, geography of logistics activities, supply chain management, logistics theories and freight models.Results: The relationship between logistics research and theory is ambiguous in that the majority of the research does not explicitly incorporate theory. Logistics particularly benefits from theory originating from other disciplines, such as economics, strategic management and marketing; however, the use of theories that originate from human geography has been limited in logistics research.Conclusion: The drive to understand the movement and storage of freight at different scales has relevance to human geography, particularly the subdisciplines of transport geography and economic geography. It is therefore recommended that logistics research consider the theoretical frameworks originating from human geography.","PeriodicalId":43985,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Transport and Supply Chain Management","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.5,"publicationDate":"2022-07-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78257736","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
