The present study aimed at analysing the role that different variables play in the prediction of Academic Engagement and Burnout in first-year university students, under a multivariate perspective. The contribution of relevant psychological strengths in academic environments (Resilience, Personal initiative, and Academic Motivation), Procrastination and different coping strategies facing studies (Persistence, Avoidance and Anxiety) was explored. Also, the perception of academic demands and stress, students' affect (positive and negative) and the academic satisfaction was considered. Finally, an analysis of different engaged and burnt-out profiles of students was carried out. The contribution of the Efficacy subscale of Academic Burnout as an independent personal resource, and the consideration of the so-called Core Burnout, were subject of analysis. A sample of 172 first-year students of face-to-face universities, 68.8% women with a mean age of 22.99 years (SD = 7.62) volunteered to participate online in this study. The results showed, on the one hand, that Academic Engagement consisted mainly on a positive and intrinsic motivational construct, also characterised by academic efficacy, persistence as an active coping strategy, positive affect and satisfaction. On the other hand Core Burnout was mainly characterised by the perception of higher demands (e.g. academic overload), maladaptive learning behaviours and coping strategies such as procrastination and avoidance of difficulties, negative affect and dissatisfaction. Different profiles of engaged and burnt-out students were also analysed showing strong differences regarding personal strengths, coping with learning strategies, well-being and satisfaction with studies.These results could help us to set bases for the development of early support and prevention programs for students’ Burnout, as well as actions aiming at promoting students’ Engagement and well-being during their first academic year.","PeriodicalId":43927,"journal":{"name":"Accion Psicologica","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.5944/AP.15.2.21831","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45292957","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Data for this study was from 24 of the 59 countries used in the World Values Survey Wave 6. Multilevel modelling was used as a means to analyse the influence of individual level (Level 1) and country level (Level 2) variables on life satisfaction. Results indicated that the individual level predictors interpersonal trust and importance of close relationships made meaningful positive contributions to life satisfaction. The competition variable aggregated at the country level significantly negatively predicted life satisfaction, while country-level aggregated autonomy shared a positive relationship with life satisfaction.","PeriodicalId":43927,"journal":{"name":"Accion Psicologica","volume":"15 1","pages":"15-26"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.5944/AP.15.2.22260","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44013531","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The sample was composed of a total of 1,899 Brazilian participants who voluntarily took part in this study by completing the study survey. Based on the results of the structural equation modeling, the relationship between personal growth initiative and subjective well-being was found to be partially mediated by the presence of meaning in life. Age was found to influence the mediation, as older participants reported greater PGI and MIL. However, the context is just one side of the coin, albeit important. There might be some differential vulnerability to the development of the syndrome (the other side of the coin). The study reported here is based on a previous research that observed high levels of the syndrome in cashiers of several supermarkets. Going one step further, here (a) 13 cashiers were compared with 13 workers from other sections of a supermarket, and (b) the personality traits considered by the Big Five Model were measured for estimating the efficient use of knowledge and skills required for achieving social goals (P factor). These were the results: (a) no group differences in the syndrome between cashiers and other sections, and (b) negative correlations between the P factor and burnout scores. It is concluded that individual differences in personality might interact with the occupational context for promoting (or preventing) the burnout syndrome.","PeriodicalId":43927,"journal":{"name":"Accion Psicologica","volume":"15 1","pages":"27-38"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.5944/AP.15.2.22154","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41286767","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Du, Bernardo, and Yeung (2015) showed that self-esteem (personal and relational) mediates the relationship between locus-of-hope and life satisfaction. Locus-of-hope’s goal-related thoughts involve self-evaluation that may either enhance or diminish self-worth, which then influences life satisfaction. We tested the mediated model in three cultural groups: Malaysians, Macau Chinese, and Filipinos. Participants completed scales measuring locus-of-hope, personal and relational self-esteem, and life satisfaction. Path analysis showed significant indirect effects in all cultures: (a) internal locus-of-hope on life satisfaction, mediated by personal self-esteem, and (b) external-family locus-of-hope on life satisfaction, mediated by relational self-esteem. Other significant indirect effects were found in specific cultural groups. Cross-cultural similarities and differences are discussed with reference to how distinct cultures give different meanings to forms of agency associated with the personal strength of hope, creating distinct pathways towards life satisfaction. El presente artículo tiene como objetivo analizar las posibles diferencias entre trabajadores y desempleados en empleabilidad y variables de salud psicosocial, así como explorar el papel de la empleabilidad y la inseguridad laboral en la salud psicosocial. Para esto, se utilizó metodología cuasiexperimental, donde se administraron una serie de cuestionarios que evaluaban empleabilidad e inseguridad laboral a 97 trabajadores (35 desempleados y 62 en activo), junto a otras variables psicosociales y de salud. Los resultados muestran que la empleabilidad es mayor en desempleados y que, altas puntuaciones en este constructo se asocian a un menor malestar afectivo. Por otro lado, en la población activa, tener altos niveles de inseguridad laboral también se asocian con malestar psicológico y baja satisfacción y autoeficacia. Estos resultados se discuten considerando que la empleabilidad podría estar actuando como un amortiguador de las consecuencias negativas derivadas del desempleo y la inseguridad laboral.AbstractUnemployment and job insecurity have negative effects on health, although employability may be able to mediate these effects. The objective of this article is to analyze the possible differences between workers and unemployed in employability and psychosocial health variables, as well as to explore the role of employability and job insecurity in the active population in psychosocial health. For this, quasiexperimental methodology was used, where a questionnaire evaluating employability, job insecurity and psychosocial health variables was administered to 97 workers (35 unemployed and 62 in active). Results showed that employability is higher in unemployed and that high scores in this construct are associated with negative emotions. On the other hand, in the active population, having high levels of job insecurity were associated with psychological distress and low satisfaction and self-efficacy. These results are discussed considering that employability could be buffer the negative health consequences derived from unemployment and job insecurity.","PeriodicalId":43927,"journal":{"name":"Accion Psicologica","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.5944/AP.15.1.20945","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41317932","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

En base a ello, el objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar el posible efecto de tener un estilo de vida activo sobre la memoria emocional. Participaron del estudio 48 adultos de edad temprana y media (rango: 18-58 años) que llevaron a cabo un auto-reporte mediante el Cuestionario Internacional de Actividad Física dando cuenta de la cantidad y tipo de actividad física realizada en una semana habitual o típica, es decir aquella sostenida durante los últimos tres meses de sus vidas. Para evaluar la memoria emocional los participantes observaron una serie de imágenes positivas, negativas y neutras seleccionadas del Sistema Internacional de Imágenes Afectivas. Luego se evaluó cuántas imágenes recordaban y reconocían (tanto de modo inmediato como diferido). Se halló que los sujetos que poseían un nivel alto de actividad física en su vida diaria recordaban inmediatamente más estímulos de valencia positiva que aquellos con niveles moderados y bajos. Además, este grupo obtuvo mejores resultados en la evaluación de reconocimiento inmediato. Por tanto, incorporar a la actividad física y deportiva como un estilo de vida, mostraría tener efectos favorables en la memoria de estímulos visuales vinculados a emociones positivas.AbstractAerobic and resistance exercise has been related to physical health promotion, besides in the last years its effects at a cognitive level has been investigated. Based on that, the aim of the current work was to evaluate the possible effect of having an active life style on emotional memory. Forty-eight adults of early and middle age participated (range: 18-58 years old) who complete a report through the International Physical Activity Questionnaire about the amount and type of physical activity performed in a typical or regular week, i.e. a week sustained in the last three months of their lives. To evaluate emotional memory participants watched positive, negative and neutral images selected from the International Affective Picture System. Then, how many images they recall and recognize was evaluated (immediate and deferred measures). Participants that had a high level of physical activity in their lives remember immediately more positive images than those participants with a low or moderate level of activity. Besides, this group obtained better results in the immediate recognition measure. Thus, incorporate physical activity as a life style shows benefits in the emotional positive memory.","PeriodicalId":43927,"journal":{"name":"Accion Psicologica","volume":"31 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.5944/ap.15.1.21446","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71246040","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
