Initially seen as an innocuous remedy, it soon morphed into a hobby—and a vice—for a select few via a newly imported establishment: the “Chinese” opium den. Seen as a source of potential moral decay and physical deterioration by mainstream hygienist discourse, the opium den was also a sanctuary and a home for its disciples. His music reveals three main characteristics: it is made out of empirical material collected on the field; it is a theory of processes; it is a political and cultural act. Steve Reich’s music affects sociology on these three points: it reminds the sociologist of the nature of his craft and his commitment to the social world, questions his methods and practice; it even sheds light on his own concepts (in particular that of “process”). Chronique d’une generation oubliee, Anne Ollivier-Mellios offers insight into the rich transatlantic exchanges between American and French intellectuals in the immediate aftermath of the First World War and in the continuity of peace activism. Through personal letters and published editorials, she maps the attempts to set up international organizations, and she records how French and American radical or liberal intellectuals struggled to find a common definition of the commitment, role and means of political action of the artist or writer. It looks at the historian’s published work on the topic in both English and French and considers the political motivations which prompted him to look into this particular event. The uniqueness of this investigation is due to the personal dimension of this military episode because Zinn served as a US Air Force bombardier during the war. Raynaud","doi":"10.3917/RFEA.154.0033","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.3917/RFEA.154.0033","url":null,"abstract":"Deplacant l’accent mis sur la voix et le langage vers la genese de la composition du texte et ses dissonances, cet essai explore comment Their Eyes were Watching God (1937) de Zora Neale Hurston illustre, par son utilisation du materiau du folklore, une esthetique qui ressortit au modernisme africain americain ou « modernisme vernaculaire » et fonctionne comme critique du courant moderniste dominant. La construction et la composition du texte revelent qu’il s’agit d’un collage et d’un montage aux « coutures » eminemment visibles. Une analyse du recit d’esclave de Nanny, de l’episode de la mule de Matt Bonner, ainsi que la danse du feu dans les Everglades permet de montrer comment le modernisme de Their Eyes provient d’une intertextualite interne, inherente au processus creatif de Hurston et aux differents genres qu’elle pratiquait. Il provient aussi, irrefutablement, de sa pratique du theâtre.
