Communication links of an established communication path that extends between source and destination nodes are often broken under a high mobility environment. Although a new communication route can be established when a break in the communication path occurs, repeatedly reestablishing new routes incurs delay and substantial overhead. To address this limitation, we introduce the Communication Path abstraction in this paper. A communication path is a dynamically-created geographical area that connects the source and destination nodes. The routing functionality of a communication path is provided by the physical nodes (i.e., mobile devices) currently within the geographical region served by the path. These physical nodes take turns in forwarding data packets for the path. Since a path can be supported by many alternative nodes, this scheme is much less susceptible to node mobility. Our simulation results show the Communication Path approach can achieve several times better performance than traditional approach based on a fixed sequence of physical links.","PeriodicalId":437953,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE 36th Conference on Local Computer Networks","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129750870","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we present Z-Monitor, a monitoring and a protocol analyzer solution to control and debug IEEE 802.15.4-compliant Low Power Wireless Personal Area Networks (LoWPANs). Z-Monitor does not only support the analysis of well-known ZigBee, 6LoWPAN and RPL protocols, but is also designed to be modular and easily extensible for adding new protocols. The motivation behind the design and implementation of Z-Monitor is the fact that commercially-available products for monitoring and testing IEEE 802.15.4-compliant LoWPANs are mainly too expensive, and typically require special sniffing hardware. Z-Monitor represents a free and extensible solution, does not require special sniffing hardware, and provides comparable services to proprietary and commercial products. We also share our experimental study results that demonstrate the effectiveness of Z-Monitor in meeting its objectives.","PeriodicalId":437953,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE 36th Conference on Local Computer Networks","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128030578","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Given a stationary sensor network with K mobile sinks that traverse and sojourn in a given space of locations in the monitoring area, assume that the total travel distance of each sink is bounded by a given value L and the maximum number of hops from each sensor to a sink is bounded by an integer h ≥ 1, the problem is to find an optimal trajectory for each mobile sink and determine the sojourn time at each sojourn location in the trajectory such that the network lifetime is maximized. We first formulate this problem as a joint optimization problem consisting of finding an optimal trajectory and determining the sojourn time at each chosen location. We then show that the problem is NP-hard. We instead devise a novel three-stage heuristic, which consists of calculating the sojourn time profile at each potential sojourn location, finding a high-quality trajectory for each mobile sink, and determining the actual sojourn time at each sojourn location. We finally conduct extensive experiments by simulations to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm in terms of network lifetime. We also investigate the impact of constraint parameters on the network lifetime. The experimental results demonstrate that the performance of the proposed heuristic is highly comparable to the optimal one, and the ratios of network lifetime of the proposed algorithm to the optimal network lifetime are ranged from 56% to 93%.","PeriodicalId":437953,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE 36th Conference on Local Computer Networks","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125738690","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This has resulted in extensive research on dynamic power management strategies as well as data centre design and placement. The main problem with most of the proposed or existing approaches is that they do not fully take the distributed nature of and strong logical dependencies between executed services into account. However, without a comprehensive knowledge of the wider relationships between services, local power management strategies may be ineffectual or can even result in high aggregate energy cost. Understanding this relationship is useful for fine-grained energy-aware computing. For example, services that run on underutilised servers can be stopped or seamlessly migrated to other servers, so that the underutilised servers can be turned off. Alternatively, a re-binding process can be used if the cost of service migration is high. Such advantages can be fully exploited if the dependency between services is properly understood and meaningfully modelled. This paper introduces a conceptual architecture for an energy-aware service execution platform and compares three optimisation mechanisms to support dynamic service migration and rebinding.","PeriodicalId":437953,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE 36th Conference on Local Computer Networks","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126718904","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These functionalities are being implemented by numerous Electronic Control Units (ECUs), which are often interconnected with CAN, FlexRay, LIN, and MOST. However, some car models already use Ethernet for high bandwidth applications, like diagnosis, flash update, and multimedia applications. With the increasing number of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) the network architecture of the vehicle needs to change in order to keep up with the growing demands. In this paper we focus on a domain-based evolution of today's in-vehicle network using switched Ethernet to keep up with ADAS demands. We examine different suitable Ethernet-based topologies and evaluate them based on realistic in-vehicle traffic in different network load situations. In addition, we determine the impact of MAC-Layer prioritization to the provided in-car applications and to the communication between the in-car domains.","PeriodicalId":437953,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE 36th Conference on Local Computer Networks","volume":"155 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127099116","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Studies demonstrate that the mobility pattern followed by the users has an impact on some metrics strongly related to the performance (i.e., handoff rate, cell residence time, etc). Some aspects of the Random Waypoint mobility model have been studied in depth, but relating those studies with different possible layouts for the access points still remains an open issue. The interest in forecasting the next cell where the device may be handed off is twofold: 1. it gives a deeper insight into the statistical study of the mobility model; 2. it is useful to manage the resource allocation to improve the performance. The goal of this paper is to provide an analytical framework for these predictions in a symmetric layout composed of four circular cells covering a circular area. Equations are provided along with numerical examples for a given scenario.","PeriodicalId":437953,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE 36th Conference on Local Computer Networks","volume":"79 18","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"113944418","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They help with improving the efficiency in providing higher quality of care. These systems collect relevant data and transmit them to the healthcare provider, to be stored on their servers in the form of patients' Electronic Health Records (EHRs). The EHR may then be used by healthcare professional, either at provider locations or remotely through mobile devices. Among of the main concerns in acceptance of these systems, ensuring the privacy of personally sensitive information and securing EHRs during the transmission can be named. This paper, reports a trust negotiation approach that we have developed to address these concerns. It complements the strengths of the Transport Layer Security (TLS) as the underlying protocol. This combination results in significant improvements in overcoming security related concerns compared to the traditional identity-based only access control techniques. We also report the experimental works that demonstrate the ease of application of the proposed approach in typical mobile environments.","PeriodicalId":437953,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE 36th Conference on Local Computer Networks","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128501986","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Along with this trend, wireless network technologies have been promoted for modern wireless NCSs (WNCSs). However, popular wireless network standards such as IEEE 802.11/15/16 are not designed for real-time communications. Key issues in real-time applications include limited transmission reliability and poor transmission delay performance. Considering the unique features of real-time control systems, this paper develops a conditional retransmission enabled transport protocol (CRETP) to improve the delay performance of the transmission control protocol (TCP) and also the reliability performance of the user datagram protocol (UDP) and its variants. Key features of the CRETP include a connectionless mechanism with acknowledgment (ACK), conditional retransmission and detection of ineffective data packets on the receiver side.","PeriodicalId":437953,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE 36th Conference on Local Computer Networks","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117062175","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
