By nature these age groups are the age of experimentation and exploration associated with a range of risky behaviors, including risky sexual behaviors. Pre-marital sex as risky sexual practices can lead student adolescents to acquisition of STIs and un-intended pregnancy. However there is paucity of information in prevalence of pre-marital sexual practices and it factors in private higher institutions particularly to the study site. Therefore this study is aimed to assess the prevalence of pre-marital sex practices and associated factors among Rift valley university students, south western Ethiopia 2018. Methods: An institution based cross sectional study was conducted at Rift Valley University Jimma campus from March to April 2018. A pretested structured questionnaire was used to collect the data. Systematic random sampling technique was employed to select a total of 264 respondents in this study. The data were entered into EPI info version 3.5.3 and transferred to SPSS version 21 for analysis. Descriptive, bivariate and multivariate analyses were done. A P-value <0.05 was considered to determine the statistical significance of the association between factors and outcome (pre-sexual practice). The Odds ratio was also used to determine the presence and the degree of association between the outcome and independent variables. Results: Out of 264 aimed samples, 260 involved in the study and yielded a response rate of 98.5%. The prevalence of pre-marital sexual practice was 43.8%. Living status, AOR=3.8CI (1.91, 7.52) and substance use, AOR=4.67(2.59, 8.46) were found to be independent predictors of pre-marital sex among students. Conclusion and recommendations: Pre- marital sex practice among students was found to be high. Living status and substance use were independent predictors of premarital sex in students. Jimma zone health bureau should strengthen addressing in community and family involvement in adolescent health and substance use habit.","PeriodicalId":437508,"journal":{"name":"Nursing & Care Open Access Journal","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-02-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115123600","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nurses are faced with risk of occupational hazards, hence the need for use of personal protective equipment (PPE). This study examined occupational hazard preventive measures among nurses in a Nigerian tertiary health institution. Method: this study adopted descriptive cross sectional research design using structured questionnaire for data collection. Two hundred and ninety-two (292) questionnaires were distributed but only 264 were retrieved among which 220 were completely filled and therefore included in data analysis. Simple random sampling was used to select study participants. Ethical approval was obtained from UI/UCH ethical committee before data collection. Data software package was used for data analysis. Results: The findings of this study showed that about two third (66%) of nurses working in the facility have good knowledge of occupational hazard. Respondents confirmed the availability of PPE (79.1%) and occupational health services (83.6%) in their work place. However, physical (99%), chemical (97.7%) and biological (95.5%) hazards were identified as the three commonest forms of hazard been exposed. Also, gloves (99%), goggle (99.5%), gown (99.5%) and face-mask (99.5%) were identified as mostly used PPE. Overall, 163(74%) nurses practise good preventive strategies. Negligence and poor accessibility were mentioned as factors affecting use of PPE. Conclusion: The study concluded that despite good knowledge of occupational hazards among nurses, many of them don’t use PPE due to lack of organizational policies. It is therefore imperative for health institutions to ensure use of PPE to reduce risk of occupational hazard among nurses.","PeriodicalId":437508,"journal":{"name":"Nursing & Care Open Access Journal","volume":"86 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-02-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115922191","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Objective: To investigate the relatives' experiences in a cardiac medical intensive care unit with a view to identifying areas in which the relatives need support and promoting cooperation between relatives and staff. Method: Prospective, observational, questionnaire survey of 100 relatives of a semi-structured questionnaire. Relatives are included in the study on the patient's 3rd day of admission. Analysis of the open-ended questions was inspired by the thematic analysis. Results: Of 139 invited, 100 responded (71%). The relatives were mainly cohabiting / spouse (70%). The majority (78%) responded that it was great or very important to be involved in the care. A minor group (8%) reported that they received too little information. The thematic analysis revealed three themes in where the relatives favored honest and specific information about the patient's condition and prognosis, how they struggled in an unfamiliar setting and were depending on staffs help to cope with the situation. Conclusion: This study gives important insights into the relatives' feelings and needs when a patient is admitted to the intensive care unit. It is important that relatives are involved in the care and the relatives expect specific information about the patient's disease and prognosis.
