Limited accessibility and resources as well as difficulties in predicting the behavior of some facility components call for enhanced collaboration between humans and robots and improved capacity for robotic instruction in nearly linguistic terms. We present a neurofuzzy approach for instructing robots operating in such environments and propose a functional architecture for groups of collaborating instructible robots.","PeriodicalId":437491,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE International Joint Symposia on Intelligence and Systems","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-11-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126687164","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The identification task is decomposed into the detection of distinct signals using separate neural network modules. Such signals are coding regions, splice sites and transcription start regions (cap-site). A focus of the work is the use of back-percolation, cascade correlation, and time-delay neural networks. These give, in this particular application, better generalization than the well known backpropagation algorithm. This system achieves a prediction accuracy comparable to the traditionally designed gene identification packages and is able to produce more accurate protein sequences from the constructed gene structures.","PeriodicalId":437491,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE International Joint Symposia on Intelligence and Systems","volume":"113 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-11-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134527531","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this context, the vision system's purpose is translated into a set of behaviors, which are decomposed in specific tasks. A multi-agent approach is used to model purpose, behaviors, tasks and the relationship among them. Purpose is modeled by a society of autonomous agents, each one responsible for a specific visually guided behavior. Tasks are represented by basic agents, organized in a hierarchical structure with autonomous agents on the top. As a testbed, the architecture of a specific system for visually guided assembly is presented and a distributed implementation is described.","PeriodicalId":437491,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE International Joint Symposia on Intelligence and Systems","volume":"217 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-11-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133402751","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The operations required in encoding and decoding the data are described under the umbrella cellular automata transforms (CAT). There is a huge number of these transform bases. CAT which can be used in the way other mathematical transforms (e.g. Fourier, Discrete Cosine, Laplace, Wavelet, etc.) are utilized. In data compression applications, the rules and pertinent keys used to generate the CA are selected in favour of those which yield basis functions with the best information packing characteristics. On the other hand, for encryption the selection is biased towards those with the tendency to yield an avalanche effect. In the latter case the transform process must be error free.","PeriodicalId":437491,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE International Joint Symposia on Intelligence and Systems","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-11-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131488516","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For the evaluation of all feasible assembly sequences several criteria are taken into account. /sup High/LAP considers for example the separability and the manipulability of the generated (sub)assemblies, Furthermore, the necessity of reorientation for a mating operation and parallelism during plan execution is considered. Another important criterion is the stability of the generated (sub)assemblies. Most of the assembly planners developed up to date use heuristics or user defined criteria to determine assembly stability for plan evaluation. In order to bring automatic assembly planning closer to reality /sup High/LAP performs a powerful geometrical and physical reasoning. The system presented is the first assembly planning system taking into account the range of all stable orientations of an assembly considering friction for plan evaluation.","PeriodicalId":437491,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE International Joint Symposia on Intelligence and Systems","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-11-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131816338","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Also in the quest for a flexible industrial production system is it desirable to be able to reprogram robots offline, so that they can be doing one task whilst being prepared for another. This paper describes the mathematical and computational background to a system which enables the development and testing of robot programs in a CAD environment in a way that is simple to use and compatible with existing methods used in CAD systems.","PeriodicalId":437491,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE International Joint Symposia on Intelligence and Systems","volume":"141 3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-11-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131660801","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We develop an adaptive intelligent system that controls the movement of a jointed leg during a running stride. This paper focuses on the ballistic controller, which controls the movement of the leg from the point of takeoff from the ground to the point of landing. The controller learns from experience to move the leg along a specified series of configurations which provide a smooth transition from takeoff to landing. Learning is online, so the controller adapts to the requirements of the stride on the fly. It can handle strides of different sizes and can scale obstacles. Very accurate control is achieved even during the first learning attempt.","PeriodicalId":437491,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE International Joint Symposia on Intelligence and Systems","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-11-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132148763","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

But significant practical obstacles due to individual differences, subject generated artifacts, noise and interference remain. Eyeblinks and eyeball movements artifacts cause severe interference in EEG recorded by forehead electrodes. This work concentrates on real-time removal of eye-blink and eyeball movement artifacts from the forehead EEG recordings. The proposed approach uses a fixed bandpass FIR filter to remove slow baseline drift. This is followed by a subject specific eyeblink threshold. The results obtained from a real-time implementation on a general-purpose computer are also presented.","PeriodicalId":437491,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE International Joint Symposia on Intelligence and Systems","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-11-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125651741","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on the model, we discuss how learning could be accomplished by such a system, and how knowledge could be transferred between generations. The model uses clusters of neural networks to achieve its goal. The proposed model uses a genetic algorithm closely coupled to the memory neural cluster to achieve creativity and to generate original responses. Other issues, such as possible internal representation models, are also discussed. As the model is certainly intensive in terms of computing-power and memory, and several components remain to be clearly defined, a reduced model is proposed. We define a system that can only handle one type of input (voice) that will learn a limited number of procedures. This reduced system would provide a basis to test the actual feasibility of the model and its possibilities, as well as different subsystem implementations.","PeriodicalId":437491,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE International Joint Symposia on Intelligence and Systems","volume":"107 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-11-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123037698","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
