Many of the resulting changes are due to changes in resource allocation that come with infection. This investigation quantifies some aspects of the parasite-host relationship between cercariae and its intermediate host Bithynia sp. Noticeable differences in the shell shape of parasitized and uninfected Bithynia sp. snails were investigated using. Relative Warp Analysis, Discriminant analysis, and Kruskal-Wallis to determine shell shape divergence of the two populations. These shape divergence accounted for more than 35% of the variance in shell morphology relative to mean shape. Apparently, it may be that broader body whorl, wider aperture, conic to globose shape and bigger snails are more likely to become infected with Bithynia sp., or that narrowly conic, reduced aperture, small-sized relative to the shell shape are more resistant to parasite infections. Hence, the methodology using landmark-based geometric morphometric methods proved to be more profound for the characterization of Bithynia sp. snails even at a subtle degree.","PeriodicalId":437476,"journal":{"name":"Journal of medical and bioengineering","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114442980","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Bevacizumab is a recent therapy for stopping the tumor growth. The purpose of this paper is to present our reproducibility study of predicting response of the brain tumors to Bevacizumab treatment. This method allows physicians to select most effective treatment plans. We take two image series of patients before and after the treatment. After constructing Eigen images, we extract their statistical histogram features and then use regression analysis to develop a predictive model. Predictive models of response are developed with large regression coefficients (maximum R2=0.8). This method is dependent on the operator. To decrease the operator’s role, this method is repeated four times for each patient. Then, the average of the achieved results is used for regression analysis. As a result, the regression coefficient increases (maximum R=0.86). The result of this approach is compared to that of a previous work at the University of Tehran showing excellent reproducibility of the proposed method. ","PeriodicalId":437476,"journal":{"name":"Journal of medical and bioengineering","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116159925","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Concentrations of total phenols, mean degree of polymerization (mDP), and average molecular weights (aMW) were compared. Flat membranes of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) with a molecular weight cut off (MWCO) of 10 (kDa) and 1 (kDa) were used in an Alfa Laval equipment LAbUnit M10. The pressure was tested at 2, 3, 4 and 5 (bar) at a constant speed of 0.9 (m/s) and the tangential velocity was evaluated at 1.2, 1.3 and 1.4 (m/s) at 5 bar pressure and constant temperature (20oC). The transmembrane pressure and tangential velocity tests confirmed a direct relationship of these variables with J for both membranes. The J for 1kDa membrane was more sensitive to changes in pressure, with a maximum J of 15.18 (L/mh), while that for 10 kDa membrane J reached a maximum value of 37.50 (L/mh), both at 20 °C, 5 bar and 1.3 (m/s). The purification by UF reduced the mDP of the extracts from 7.15 up to 1-3 units of flavan-3-ols, corresponding to dimmers and trimmers in the permeate. To maximize J, the phenolics concentration, and minimize the mDP, carrying out the UF process with 10kDa membrane to 5 bar and 1.3 m/s would be optimal.","PeriodicalId":437476,"journal":{"name":"Journal of medical and bioengineering","volume":"59 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121750789","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is even a bigger challenge for the developing and under developed countries due to scarce resources. Taking the case of India, where majority population lives in rural areas and far furlong regions like Andaman and Nikobar Islands or eastern parts of the country, getting desired level of medical facilities has become dream for the citizens of these areas. This inadequate healthcare delivery system is facing constraints due to increased number of patients, which is reflecting as long waiting queue, shortage of hospital beds and inadequate intensive care/emergency units. The existing healthcare delivery model, if supported by the modern wireless and web technologies can give solutions to some of the problems and this in turn can make appropriate healthcare feasible for more number of people without their relocation. With the use of information and communication technologies in healthcare many terms like Telemedicine, eHealth and mHealth are frequently used. This paper briefly introduces these terms and proposes new telemedicine mHealth architecture.","PeriodicalId":437476,"journal":{"name":"Journal of medical and bioengineering","volume":"77 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133497549","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recently, beta-glucosidase has been of interest for biomass conversion that acts in synergy with two other enzymes, endo-glucanase and exo-glucanase. However, there is not much information regarding the molecular interactions of beta-glucosidase with cellobiose. Thus, this study reports on the binding modes between beta-glucosidase from glycoside hydrolase family 1 namely BglB with cellobiose and cellotetrose via molecular docking method. Further analysis on the hydrophobic interactions revealed the key residues involved in forming hydrogen bonds (h-bond) with the substrates. The active residue were identified to be Gln22, Glu167, Glu356, Glu402 and Trp402 .These findings may provide valuable insigths in designing beta-glucosidase with higher cellulose-hydrolyzing efficiency.","PeriodicalId":437476,"journal":{"name":"Journal of medical and bioengineering","volume":"70 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115544014","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study deals with food texture of crispy foods focusing on two types of chewing sounds in eating the foods, which are air conduction sound and bone conduction sound. Five kinds of snack foods were used for this study. Air conduction sound was recorded from microphones and bone conduction sound around cheekbones was measured with a headphone-like instrument in which acceleration sensors were embedded. The two types of sounds were analyzed by FFT and power spectra were obtained. Finite element models were also applied for examining vibration characteristics of human skull. The computational results of modal analysis show that size of human skull affects bone conduction sound, which was identified as different power spectra from experimental data of an adult and a child. These results suggest that biomechanical factor of skull affects eating quality of foods. 1","PeriodicalId":437476,"journal":{"name":"Journal of medical and bioengineering","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129324580","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is generally suggested that an extensive attention should be paid to plant breeding efforts to address the issues of food security. Marker Assisted Selection (MAS) is referred to as the use of DNA markers for the selection of desirable traits in segregating/breeding populations. DNA based breeding selection is much more reliable than traditional breeding methods. Breeding populations used to select the desirable traits called segregating. Yet segregating populations need huge financial as well as leisure requirement. However DNA extraction in segregating populations has been always being a limiting factor either because of quantity or quality. The present study was conducted to improve the DNA quality and quantity of rice by investigating the effects of the age of the seedlings and EDTA buffer concentration in order to apply more reliable downstream processes and subsiquantly to gain better results. As a result, Four weeks old seedlings gave the best quantity of DNA (118.9ng/μl). The concentrations of EDTA in the first step buffer (2mM) and second step buffer (0.1mM) were the best for DNA extraction.","PeriodicalId":437476,"journal":{"name":"Journal of medical and bioengineering","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129140557","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of this work is to design a method that can automatically segment the optic disc in the digital fundus images. The template matching method is used to approximately locate the optic disc centre, and the blood vessel is extracted to reset the centre. This is followed by applying the Level Set Method, which incorporates edge term, distance-regularization term and shape-prior term, to segment the shape of the optic disc. Seven measures are used to evaluate the performance of the methods. The effectiveness of the proposed method is evaluated against alternative methods on three public data sets DRIVE, DIARETDB1 and DIARETDB0. It remains to be determined whether different moderate exercises have different effects on neuro-related hormones (ACTH, AGPR, CNFT, FSH, GH and LH levels). This study was conducted to investigate whether a regular music aerobic exercise (MAE) had similar or different effects on neuro-related hormones before and after a 12-week exercise. Forty middle-age women were recur ited for this study, thirty eligible for regular weekly MAE schedule were enrolled into the experimental group and completed pre- and post-test. The other 10 participants who were not eligible to the MAE schedule were enrolled into the parallel control group without exercise. Results showed that the MAE exercise for 12 weeks did not change ACTH, AGRP, CNTF or LH, but selectively improved FSH (p = .07) and GH (p < .001). The parallel control group without exercise revealed insignificant change of ACTH, AGPR, CNFT, FSH, GH and LH levels. This study shows that music aerobic exercise increases blood FSH and GH levels. It may be worthwhile to encourage MAE exercise for middle-age adults to promote neuro-related hormones.","PeriodicalId":437476,"journal":{"name":"Journal of medical and bioengineering","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123767293","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
