The regulation of body temperature, metabolism, blood pressure, fertility, fetal neurological development, children's academic achievement, mental health, and overall quality of life are all significantly impacted by thyroid dysfunction. In response to inflammatory circumstances, the adhesion molecule P-selectin is transported to the surfaces of platelets and endothelial cells. It is frequently investigated as an inflammatory disease biomarker. Aim of the study: To evaluate the level of serum p-selectin among patients with thyroid dysfunction. Subjects and methods: This case-control research is comprised of twenty patients in Group A who have hyperthyroidism and have elevated thyroid functions; twenty patients in Group B with hypothyroidism and reduced thyroid function; and twenty subjects in Group C with normal thyroid functions (the euthyroid group). After taking a full medical history, a full clinical examination was done. Blood samples were collected for routine labs and measurement of TSH, FT4, and P. SELECTIN LEVEL Results: The p-selectin level was higher in the hyperthyroidism group than in the hypothyroidism group and in the control group. Conclusion: P-selectin has a higher level in hyperthyroidism.","PeriodicalId":436341,"journal":{"name":"Fayoum University Medical Journal","volume":"58 23","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140733349","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Abnormalities in serum magnesium levels are known to cause life-threatening problems in critically ill children. Aim of the study: It aimed to investigate the serum magnesium level in critically ill children, identify precipitating factors that could affect the magnesium level, and conduct a prospective evaluation of the outcome. Subjects and Methods: 1 00 children were admitted to the ICU at Fayoum Teaching Hospital from March 1st, 2019 to November 30th, 2019. They were prospectively analyzed with the exclusion of children who received magnesium products within the last 24 hours and children with known congenital renal magnesium wasting (e.g., Bartter’s syndrome and Gitelaman’s syndrome). Results: The median magnesium level on admission was 2.5 (range 0.6-4.6) mg/dl. The percentage of hypomagnesaemia was 3% (3 cases), 57% (57 cases) had normal magnesium, and hyper-magnesaemia was present in 40% (40 cases) at admission. Serum magnesium levels were lower in non-survived children with a median of 2.3 (2.3-2.6) than in those who survived with a median of 2.5 (2.3-2.7), but there was no statistically significant association with mortality with a p value of 0.274. Conclusion: We can’t consider serum magnesium predictive of mortality. The incorporation of other electrolytes may be more predictive of mortality than magnesium.","PeriodicalId":436341,"journal":{"name":"Fayoum University Medical Journal","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126329605","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

AV, commonly known as acne, is a skin disorder that affects millions of people across the globe. It is often seen in teens and young adults and is the most common skin disorder in the United States. Aim of the study: To compare the outputs of different studies about IL-35 levels in AV patients as an anti-inflammatory cytokine. Methods: This meta-analysis follows the PRISMA flow diagram and the guidelines of the Cochrane Handbook. We searched several electronic databases, such as the Web of Science, PubMed, Cochrane, and Scopus, from inception to April 2021 without any language restriction. We included patients with AV. Age: more than 18 and less than 35 years and both sex Result: The present study showed that there was a highly statistically significant difference between patients and controls regarding IL-35 levels in serum and tissue. Results of the meta-analysis show that IL-35 levels in serum and tissues are significantly higher in the patients group compared with the control ( P<0.001 ). The pooled effect estimate revealed that there is significant difference between IL-35 levels in tissues according to grade of mild, moderate, and severe subgroups ( P<0.001 ) Conclusion: Serum and tissue IL-35 were found to be major anti-inflammatory cytokines released by the sebaceous glands in our investigation. They were substantially more prevalent among acne patients. They were thought to play an important role in acne treatment at numerous points due to their anti-inflammatory properties. That could be hampered in AV by hitherto unknown impediments.","PeriodicalId":436341,"journal":{"name":"Fayoum University Medical Journal","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127127879","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
