Garvey","doi":"10.1353/amu.2020.0003","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1353/amu.2020.0003","url":null,"abstract":"Abstract:The current practice of the Iraqi maqām (Ar. maqām al-ʿirāqī), the urban art song of Iraq, is a historical product of the lived experiences of its performers, who have been accumulating its components and implementing their aesthetic principles in a genealogical format since at least the 10th century AH (17th century AD). In this article, I survey recent Iraqi historiographical literature to reveal the ways in which Iraqi scholars conceive of the Iraqi maqām tradition and its transmission. Drawing from fieldwork with the last Burmese slide guitar master, Man Yar Pyae U Tin, this paper details the instrument's adaptation to Burmese musical tonalities and aesthetics and its role in the performing arts renaissance of the early twentieth century. Whereas the previously implied learning patterns involved the paramount importance of kinship and neighborhood ties, the postcolonial condition, embedded in a modern nation-state apparatus, promoted seemingly modern technologies of learning and transmission—notably written notation and academic institutions. The aim of this article is to complicate this modernization narrative by drawing on contemporary anthropological theory. Approaching the issue of knowledge transmission through the lens of phenomenology, I argue, allows us to appreciate it as it unfolds in everyday interaction instead of assuming its course under the aegis of abstract macroprocesses.Penyebaran pengetahuan dalam conteks gamelan Jawa mengalami perubahan yang penting selama abad keduapuluh.
