In this paper, we propose a novel approach using sound source localization (SSL) with microphone arrays to determine where in a room a smartphone is located. In our system called Daredevil, smartphones emit sound at particular times and frequencies, which are received by microphone arrays. Using SSL that we modified for our purposes, we can calculate the angle between the center of each microphone array and the phone, and thereby triangulate the phone's position. In this early work, we demonstrate the feasibility of our approach and present initial results. Daredevil can locate smartphones in a room with an average precision of 3.19 feet. We identify a number of challenges in realizing the system in large deployments, and we hope this work will benefit researchers who pursue such techniques.","PeriodicalId":43578,"journal":{"name":"Mobile Computing and Communications Review","volume":"4 1","pages":"9-19"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72885436","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, there is still a strong resistance to using wearable technology for fear of decreased visibility and attention to one's surroundings. To address this concern, this paper describes a series of experiments that study user tendencies related to viewing and placing text in head mounted displays (HMDs). From the results of two pilot experiments, we show that awareness is to some extent better for HMDs compared to smartphones, and find that users would prefer to place text in the background rather than the HMD screen. We then consequently build an intelligent system to manage placement of text such as e-mail and messaging using computer vision algorithms.?? Finally, through two experiments comparing automatic and manual text placement, we show that our system can mimic human tendencies with approximately 70% accuracy.","PeriodicalId":43578,"journal":{"name":"Mobile Computing and Communications Review","volume":"26 1","pages":"20-31"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86085344","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we investigate how user traits can be inferred by observing only a single snapshot of installed apps. Using supervised learning methods and minimal external information we show that user traits such as religion, relationship status, spoken languages, countries of interest, and whether or not the user is a parent of small children, can be easily predicted. Using data collected from over 200 smartphone users, specifically the list of installed apps and the corresponding ground truth traits of the users, we show that for most traits we can achieve over 90% precision. Our inference method can be used to provide services such as personalized content delivery or recommender systems for users. We also highlight privacy loss that can occur from unrestricted access to the app lists in popular smartphone operating systems.","PeriodicalId":43578,"journal":{"name":"Mobile Computing and Communications Review","volume":"1 1","pages":"1-8"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77521992","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This technique could be implemented through the User-Provided Network model in which end-users could become suppliers of Internet connectivity. In this paper, the behavior of such system is investigated from a queuemanagement perspective. A numerical analysis that takes into consideration both the high variability of broadband link speeds and different packet-size distributions is presented. Based on these results, we propose a hybrid packet scheduling scheme that enables the application of Lessthan-Best-Effort services at the connection edges and allows for the development of different packet scheduling policies corresponding to different requirements. Some significant open issues and research directions are also highlighted.","PeriodicalId":43578,"journal":{"name":"Mobile Computing and Communications Review","volume":"14 1","pages":"55-63"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-02-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79926969","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These domains present challenging problems in terms of human-machine collaboration: human users need to task the network to help them achieve mission objectives, while humans (sometimes the same individuals) are also sources of mission-critical information. We propose a natural language-based conversational approach to supporting humanmachine working in mission-oriented sensor networks. We present a model for human-machine and machine-machine interactions in a realistic mission context, and evaluate the model using an existing surveillance mission scenario. The model supports the flow of conversations from full natural language to a form of Controlled Natural Language (CNL) amenable to machine processing and automated reasoning, including high-level information fusion tasks. We introduce a mechanism for presenting the gist of verbose CNL expressions in a more convenient form for human users. We show how the conversational interactions supported by the model include requests for expansions and explanations of machine-processed information.","PeriodicalId":43578,"journal":{"name":"Mobile Computing and Communications Review","volume":"178 1","pages":"75-84"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-02-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75068619","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To this aim, energy efficiency analysis is performed by the research community, mainly focusing on the development of power consumption models. However, recent studies [1] have highlighted the inability of existing models to accurately estimate energy consumption even in non-composite scenarios, where the operation of a single device is analyzed. The inability of such models is further highlighted under real life scenarios, where the impact induced by the simultaneous operation of several devices renders the application of traditional models completely inappropriate. As a result, energy efficiency evaluation under complex configurations and topologies, needs to be experimentally investigated through the application of online monitoring solutions. In this work, we propose the innovative NITOS Energy consumption Monitoring Framework (EMF) able to support online monitoring of energy expenditure, along with the experiment execution. The developed framework is built on a distributed network of low-cost, but highly accurate devices and is fully integrated with the large-scale wireless NITOS testbed. The framework evaluation is performed under both low-level experiments that demonstrate the platform's high-level accuracy, as well as through high-level experiments that showcase how online and distributed monitoring can facilitate energy performance assessment of realistic testbed experiments.","PeriodicalId":43578,"journal":{"name":"Mobile Computing and Communications Review","volume":"268 1","pages":"64-74"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-02-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75388705","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Yet, to become feasible in practice and accepted by users, it is crucial that opportunistic communication be energy-efficient.\u0000 Through extensive and detailed measurements and analysis, we show in this paper, that all of today's device-to-device communication technologies suffer from two grave energy consumption problems: very expensive neighbor discovery and unfair connection maintenance. We consider the two most well-known technologies -- Wi-Fi Direct and Bluetooth, and a third solution based on the WLAN access point mode -- WLAN-Opp. We carefully design a measurement setup which allows us to isolate the energy consumption of individual operations (e.g. CPU sleeping/waking up, scanning/listening for neighbors etc) for thesetechnologies and compare the technologies based on these measurements. Our analysis reveals that neighbor discovery can quickly drain a device's battery, depending on the required scanning frequency. In addition, once a connection is established, the \"host\" of the connection consumes two to five times the energy needed by a \"client\". To solve this unfairness problem, we propose a strategy that periodically alternates the hosting role among the peers. Further, we minimize the cost of the role switching operation by using the distribution of the residual connection time of two peers to calculate an adaptive switching period. We examine the trade-off between fairness and switching cost on real-world connection traces and show that our scheme largely outperforms static role switching. Finally, we demonstrate that our fair role switching scheme is also effective when run on real devices.","PeriodicalId":43578,"journal":{"name":"Mobile Computing and Communications Review","volume":"63 1","pages":"25-36"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-02-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74426116","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The various actors use data to make decisions: the larger the value, the better (i.e. more informed) the decision. At every moment, individual actors have the choice of making a decision or else to defer the decision to a later time. However, the longer they wait, the lower the value of the data they hold. To counter-balance the effect of time discounting, we define an algebraic operation that we call aggregation, whereby two or more actors integrate their data in the hope of increasing its value. Our main contribution is a formal look at the value of time-discounted information and at the algebra of its aggregation. We allow aggregation of time-discounted information to proceed in an arbitrary, not necessarily pairwise, manner. Our model relates aggregation decisions to the ensuing value of information and suggests natural thresholding strategies for the aggregation of the information collected by sets of network actors. Extensive simulations have confirmed the accuracy of our theoretical predictions.","PeriodicalId":43578,"journal":{"name":"Mobile Computing and Communications Review","volume":"145 1","pages":"85-96"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-02-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82270773","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we investigate the problem of streaming uncompressed High Definitio (HD) videos over 60GHz networks. We present an adaptive multiple description (MD) coding (MDC) technique based on Priority Encoding Transmission (PET) that exploits the different significanc of the pixel bits, and an interleaving based transmission scheme to combat the bursty losses due to blockage. A nonlinear integer programming problem is formulated and solved with a heuristic approach for determining the sub-optimal coding and transmission parameters. The proposed scheme is adaptive to the dynamic 60GHz link conditions for enhanced video quality. The performance of the proposed scheme is validated with simulations.","PeriodicalId":43578,"journal":{"name":"Mobile Computing and Communications Review","volume":"37 1","pages":"14-24"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-02-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81391582","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
