It is shown that knowledge propagation described using such extended fuzzy Petri nets still terminates in a unique stable state. Based on this result, the paper introduces an algorithm for knowledge propagation in medical decision support systems. We also discuss the general properties of knowledge propagation functions terminating in a unique stable state leading to the final recommendation of diagnose or treatment.","PeriodicalId":435116,"journal":{"name":"2008 First International Symposium on Applied Sciences on Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125250792","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The loss of motor functions especially of the grasping function leads to a life-long dependency on helping persons and thereby to a dramatic decrease in quality of life. With the help of so-called neuroprostheses, the grasp function can be substantially improved. Nowadys, systems for grasp restoration can only be used by patients with preserved voluntary shoulder and elbow function. In patients with a higher SCI the ability to move the elbow is lost and the number of active control movements decreases. A Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) offers a method to overcome this problem. This work gives an overview of the Graz BCI used for the control of neuroprosthetic devices.","PeriodicalId":435116,"journal":{"name":"2008 First International Symposium on Applied Sciences on Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117162106","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We have improved features of iris templates by using new filter bank and applying locally of Principle and Independent component analysis on extracted features. Simulation results show improvement of iris recognition by decreasing false match rate in matching level.","PeriodicalId":435116,"journal":{"name":"2008 First International Symposium on Applied Sciences on Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129290796","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This project aims mainly to aid in the monitoring of the foetal movement in the last four weeks of pregnancy. Besides the integration of sensors in the garment there will be needed a hierarchical communication system that allows the delivery of the data collected from the garment that the pregnant is wearing to the doctor. The pregnant can be either at home or in the hospital. In the first stage of the project tests are being made using several types of sensors integrated in a belt in order to choose the one that is more reliable for the detection of foetal movement. Another sensing task is the manufacture of the electrodes for the electrocardiogram (ECG) system. At this point, the electrodes for the ECG are already made and working. The testing of the sensor for the detection of foetal movement is still being done.","PeriodicalId":435116,"journal":{"name":"2008 First International Symposium on Applied Sciences on Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130816244","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Throughout the 8-day period the electrode stayed on the skin, only the battery was replaced before each recording session. EMG-RMS values were recorded from the biceps during 50% and 100%-MVC exercises on 6 out of the 8 days. The results show a gradual decrease in RMS values with time. The RMS values at day 8 were, compared with day 1, down with 27.1% and 31.7% for 50% MVC and 100% MVC, respectively.","PeriodicalId":435116,"journal":{"name":"2008 First International Symposium on Applied Sciences on Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115486775","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It enables the effective use of high-level SystemCTM and C++ features like classes (object-oriented design paradigm), templates and method based communication for the description of SW and HW. Furthermore, it supports the OSCI SystemC Synthesis Subset for low-level HW description and HW IP integration. With Fossy we provide a tool for the automatic transformation of a system description in OSSS to an implementation. In this paper we present a top-down design flow using the OSSS methodology for the implementation of an adaptive video filter. The last step of the proposed design flow has been performed automatically by Fossy. We have targeted a Xilinx FPGA to proof the usability of a physical implementation for future SoC designs.","PeriodicalId":435116,"journal":{"name":"2008 First International Symposium on Applied Sciences on Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125844731","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There are many advantages of using ultra-wideband (UWB) as both a sensing and a communication standard for biomedical applications: very low radiated power (-41.3 dBm/MHz), low power consumption, good coexistence with other existing wireless technologies, robustness to interference and multipath. Moreover, one specific UWB technology, namely Frequency Modulated (FM)-UWB, has also an important advantage, which make it even more convenient for biomedical applications, such as lower power consumption than IR-UWB. The main issue that is addressed in this paper is the integration of sensing and communication devices using FM-UWB so that a single device can be obtained for two different operational modes. A preliminary feasibility study shows that an integrated sensing and communication device based on FM-UWB can meet the requirements, both for the sensing and the communication points of view, of typical biomedical applications such as non-invasive heart rate monitoring.","PeriodicalId":435116,"journal":{"name":"2008 First International Symposium on Applied Sciences on Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"110 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134253665","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

On the one hand, the objective of communication is to reduce the entropy of some random variable. On the other hand, many useful models of communication networks evolve to a state of maximum entropy given external constraints. Chemical systems also exhibit a similar entropy-maximizing property, as do many systems of interacting particles. Here we introduce an improvement of the method to make it applicable even in the more difficult case where data have very small statistical variability from sample to sample. We applied our method to a dataset from DNA arrays of different anatomopathological samples concerning 14 patients suffering from fibrosis. The clusters produced by our method have been automatically indexed by the evolutionary stage of the disease and the genes regrouped therein identified as responsible of biological processes specific for every stage.","PeriodicalId":435116,"journal":{"name":"2008 First International Symposium on Applied Sciences on Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115682437","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
