We consider varying amounts of body movement, and a variety of transmit-receive pair (Tx-Rx) locations on the human body. The characterization is presented for two different frequencies, near the 900 MHz and 2400 MHz Industrial, Scientific and Medical (ISM) bands. Common distributions used to describe fading statistics are compared to the received signal component for nine different Tx-Rx pair locations for the subjectpsilas body standing, walking and running. The Lognormal distribution provides a good fitting model, particularly when the subjectpsilas body is moving. The fit is independent of Tx-Rx pair locations. The Rayleigh distribution is a very poor fit to the received signal amplitude statistics.","PeriodicalId":435116,"journal":{"name":"2008 First International Symposium on Applied Sciences on Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122862254","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Tomorrowpsilas biomedical networks will address these needs by incorporating new technologies like wireless sensor networks into their infrastructure. However, wireless transmission of sensitive patient data presents some obvious security concerns. In this paper we discuss these concerns and how they are addressed by existing systems. We also discuss issues that need further consideration, such as run-time composition of security services depending on the criticality of data transmitted along with a solution for practical sensor systems using TinyOS. Finally, we propose intrusion detection as a future research direction for biomedical sensor networks and we elaborate on the main components of such a system.","PeriodicalId":435116,"journal":{"name":"2008 First International Symposium on Applied Sciences on Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125841712","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Biomedical sensors usually transmit periodically with known intervals and may require medium to higher data rates and lower packet drop rate than most traditional sensor networks. We propose a new method built on the IEEE 802.15.4 standard to enable higher throughput while keeping the packet drop rate at a minimum by utilizing the periodic behavior observed in such sensor networks. The simulation results show that, for certain scenarios, the average throughput compared to the IEEE 802.15.4 standard configuration can be doubled, while keeping the packet drop ratio at a minimum. Furthermore, by utilizing the property of periodic behavior, the channel efficiency has been improved from 30% to 50% compared to the standard IEEE 802.15.4 configuration. We show that the proposed method generates less protocol overhead and significantly reduces the chance of transmission errors due to colliding packets. Thus, it attains operational performance closer to saturation for a given packet discard ratio. Energy consumption due to retransmissions is reduced as the proposed algorithm greatly reduces collisions and requires few retransmissions. The proposed method requires minimum computational complexity and can be used on sensor nodes in a decentralized manner.","PeriodicalId":435116,"journal":{"name":"2008 First International Symposium on Applied Sciences on Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"59 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126869686","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Theoretical reasons for using this information-theoretic approach are briefly outlined and followed by its detailed application on disturbance/anomaly detection in wireless signals. Even though the concept is illustrated in a communications centric framework, it is more generally applicable in areas such as computational neuroscience, mathematical finance and others where it is important to statistically detect unexpected signal distortions. The results obtained show that the proposed approach is robust, highly effective, and has a low implementation complexity.","PeriodicalId":435116,"journal":{"name":"2008 First International Symposium on Applied Sciences on Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129273351","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We consider the classical problem of the multi-source impulse discharge separation from intramuscular EMG signals in the case where the impulse responses (motor unit action potentials, MUAPs) are supposed to be known to a certain degree. The main contribution of this work is the proposal of a fully unsupervised EMG decomposition algorithm that exploits both the signal model likelihood and the regularity of the motor unit discharge patterns in a Bayesian framework. The latter, though well-proven properties in the past, is essentially used as auxiliary information in an interactive procedure [1] involving human interventions. Another contribution consists of using the Tabu metaheuristics to solve the NP-hard problem over the complete search space of overlapped MUAP, unlike the existing methods that either performed on the restrained search spaces [2, 3] due to complexity or based on recursive algorithms [4, 1] with certain trial strategy and residual threshold estimations.","PeriodicalId":435116,"journal":{"name":"2008 First International Symposium on Applied Sciences on Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131840244","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recently, a systematic method was published for finding the derivative of complex-valued matrix functions which depend on matrix arguments that contain patterns. Central in this theory is the pattern producing function. Derivatives with respect to the input parameters of the pattern producing function were proposed earlier. Now, slightly stricter requirements are put on the pattern producing function such that explicit expressions can be found for the patterned derivatives with respect the actual patterned matrices. Several examples are presented.","PeriodicalId":435116,"journal":{"name":"2008 First International Symposium on Applied Sciences on Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"77 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131818789","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Electromagnetic dosimetry, which quantifies the interaction of electromagnetic fields with biological material, is primarily used for evaluation of human exposures due to wireless devices generating electromagnetic fields. The calculation of total external electromagnetic fields enables determination of the deposited electromagnetic energy in a human being via Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) using known approximation formulas. This paper presents an application of the analytical solution of SAR to calculations of human exposure from proposed BAN systems.","PeriodicalId":435116,"journal":{"name":"2008 First International Symposium on Applied Sciences on Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"286 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133740268","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Determining the precise position of the waveforms of an ECG signal is complicated due to the varying amplitudes of its waveforms, the ambiguous and changing form of the complex and morphological variations with unknown sources of drift. A model-based approach handles these complications; therefore a method based on the usage of this concept in an extended Kalman filter structure has been developed. The fiducial points are detected using both the parameters of Gaussian-functions of the model, and the state variable estimates. Several MIT-BIH ECG records are used for performance evaluation. Results show that the proposed method has an average sensitivity of 100% and a specificity of 99.93%. Simulation results illustrate that the method can contribute to and enhance the clinical ECG points extractions performance and exact tachogram representation.","PeriodicalId":435116,"journal":{"name":"2008 First International Symposium on Applied Sciences on Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"160 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116590065","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
