The method provides the infrastructure for composing abstract hardware and software models of stream based systems which can be used to produce detailed quantitative information regarding runtime properties of a given system through simulations. The method is based on a service oriented model of computation which is a modified version of hierarchical coloured Petri Nets.","PeriodicalId":435116,"journal":{"name":"2008 First International Symposium on Applied Sciences on Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126010815","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We investigate how a data stream management system can be used to query and analyze streaming data from different medical sensors in real-time. By using the open source data stream management system Esper, we have implemented queries, based upon earlier work by Elle et al., that can be used for real-time recognition of myocardial ischemia by combining a 3-axis accelerometer on the left ventricle of the heart, with an ECG sensor used for QRS detection. In the queries we use a new type of sliding window; a variable length triggered tumbling window. The window is used for aggregate operations that targets only sensor readings originating from single heartbeats. We show how algorithms that are used for medical analysis can be implemented as custom aggregation functions, thus incorporated into the declarative query language that is more suitable for medical personnel without programming experience. Results from experiments run on data recorded from surgical procedures on pig models show that the queries produce correct results, and can be run in real-time on fairly simple computers, e.g. laptops.","PeriodicalId":435116,"journal":{"name":"2008 First International Symposium on Applied Sciences on Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"73 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125522662","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A complementary form of customization is provided by domain-specific models of computation (MoCs), which can expose the high level structure of applications that is useful for various kinds of optimizing design transformations. One such MoC is Synchronous Dataflow (SDF), which is used increasingly in the design and implementation of signal processing applications. In this paper, we develop an integration of SDF- and ASIP-oriented design flows, and use this integrated design flow to explore trade-offs in the space of hardware/software implementations. We also explore an approach to ASIP implementation in terms of ldquocriticalrdquo and ldquonon-criticalrdquo applications, which allows designers to tune the degree of specialization for a targeted ASIP. Our results show that single ASIP processor tuned for pair of critical applications saves 26% to 50% of area required for implementations of two applications on separate ASIPs and non-critical applications runs on such processor with in worst case 4.5% overhead for our selection of benchmarks.","PeriodicalId":435116,"journal":{"name":"2008 First International Symposium on Applied Sciences on Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"78 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126167100","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is anticipated that these services will not only include web services but also multimedia based services, where each service will be developed to focus on certain core functionalities. In order to maximize user's experience, services will have to be composed into groups in order to integrate various functionalities from different services, and maximize the value to the user. Although a number of research have investigated service composition, a core challenge that still needs to be addressed is the ability to efficiently manage the groups to evolve to meet the changing demand of users as well as new service functionalities. In this paper we propose an adaptive “self-sustaining\" mechanism for composed service groups based on bio-inspired techniques. The biological mechanisms used include Lotka-Voltera's competition model as well as chemotaxis based search. Simulation results are also presented in this paper to illustrate the mechanism and functionalities of the bio-inspired techniques selected.","PeriodicalId":435116,"journal":{"name":"2008 First International Symposium on Applied Sciences on Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116933838","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The result is a fast and accurate technique for computing a digitally reconstructed radiograph (DRR), which can easily be extended to simultaneous algebraic reconstruction technique (SART). The proposed method is described in detail and simulated experiments show that high resolution DRR images and algebraic reconstructions can be computed in a very reasonable time even without parallel computation. The proposed technique is highly feasible for further development from the perspective of clinical imaging applications.","PeriodicalId":435116,"journal":{"name":"2008 First International Symposium on Applied Sciences on Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"71 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129704143","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The cognitive radio (CR) paradigm provides a suitable framework for this purpose. However, the phenomena of channel fading and primary cum secondary interference in cognitive radio networks does not guarantee application demands to be achieved continuously over time. In this paper, we consider the problem of analytically evaluating the reliability of a general multi-hop, multi-channel, multi-radio, multi-rate cognitive radio network, serving a given multi-application demand vector. We define reliability as the probability that a given demand vector is achieved. Each element in the vector is the desired flow rate of an application. We give a detailed simulation study to support our theory, and analyze the effect of the number of channels, radios, and simultaneous flows on the reliability of a CR network. Our quantitative measure of reliability is indicative of the effectiveness of a CR network, and will help network engineers to tune the network for better performance.","PeriodicalId":435116,"journal":{"name":"2008 First International Symposium on Applied Sciences on Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131866478","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This research involves three major challenging problems: the extraction of meaningful control information from signals emanating directly from the brain, the design of generative music techniques that respond to such information, and the training of subjects to use the system. We have implemented a proof-of-concept BCMI system that is able to use electroencephalogram information to generate music online. Ongoing research informed by a better understanding of brain activity associated with music cognition, and the development of new tools and techniques for implementing brain-controlled generative music systems offer a bright future for the development of BCMI.","PeriodicalId":435116,"journal":{"name":"2008 First International Symposium on Applied Sciences on Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"35 3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123512364","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The noninvasive BCI combines classification of movements of the same limb (wrist flexion and extension) with classification of movements of different limbs, i.e. left and right hand wrist. Results were obtained on four right-handed neurologically intact volunteers. Mean classification accuracy for four different classes was 69% (between 62% and 76%) For the given task, a two-steps two-classes classifier showed significantly better classification results that a single four class classifier.","PeriodicalId":435116,"journal":{"name":"2008 First International Symposium on Applied Sciences on Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114994123","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
