This paper studies the achieved synchronization accuracy in the presence of coupling delays between PCOs. For a three node network, accuracy bounds in the stable state are derived. This case study proves useful when looking at meshed networks, where nodes may not be directly connected with all others. While the network topology impacts the achieved accuracy of PCO synchronization, simulations reveal that even for non-neighboring nodes the timing misalignment rarely exceeds twice the direct coupling delay.","PeriodicalId":435116,"journal":{"name":"2008 First International Symposium on Applied Sciences on Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"351 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122840522","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It has been envisioned that future hospitals will have networks comprising WSNs for low rate medical sensors as well as other network nodes supporting high rate audiovisual content. The increasing collection and variety of media content (multimedia) in such a scenario, needs a framework for the interaction with the external users regarding data filtering, meta information tagging, authentication and data rights control. Furthermore due to different user terminals and network resources, media adaptation will become important to provide reliable and robust quality of services. The MPEG-21 standard seems to have potential to meet some of the mentioned requirements. In this paper, we argue for an extension of the MPEG-21 terminology for use in biomedical wireless sensor networks and incorporate the requirements needed for medical applications. We show the architecture of a demonstration prototype based on this extended MPEG-21 framework that is under development, capable of displaying selected biomedical sensor data. The deployment of such a system may become warranted in future healthcare enterprises.","PeriodicalId":435116,"journal":{"name":"2008 First International Symposium on Applied Sciences on Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"04 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130339358","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Most often, asymmetries caused by the vibrating vocal folds are the origin for this hoarseness. This work presents an enhancement of biomechanical models to simulate three dimensional vocal fold vibrations. The model consists of coupled mass-spring elements similar to Ishizaka and Flanagan (1972). The new model simulates the vibrations at 25 different positions for each vocal fold. The masses are arranged at 5 positions in longitudinal direction by 5 positions in vertical direction. The masses are capable to move in all three physical directions to better simulate human laryngeal vocal fold vibrations. The physical parameters applied in the model were chosen to visually fit real three-dimensional excised human vocal fold dynamics. Exemplarily, a symmetric dynamics simulation will be given.","PeriodicalId":435116,"journal":{"name":"2008 First International Symposium on Applied Sciences on Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127457052","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We use the replica method of statistical physics to compare the large system performance (in terms of transmitted energy vs. uncoded transmission rate) of both the matched filter and the distributed detection schemes. Using a convex quaternary alphabet we find that distributed detection is most advantageous only when the ratio of antennas at the receiver to that at the transmitter is either smaller than 0.5 or between 1 and 1.22. Matched filter detection is most advantageous for ratios greater than 2. In the two remaining regions the choice of precoding for matched filter or distributed detection results in a tradeoff between energy and transmission rate.","PeriodicalId":435116,"journal":{"name":"2008 First International Symposium on Applied Sciences on Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129877288","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the usual interfaces for board games are based on the visual channel. For example, they require players to check their moves on a video display and to interact using pointing devices, e.g., a mouse. Hence, they are not suitable for the people who have visual impairments. The present paper discusses a multipurpose system for board games that allows blind and deafblind people playing chess or other board games over a network. In particular, we describe a prototype of a special interactive haptic device to play online board games receiving feedback about the game on a dual tactile feedback.","PeriodicalId":435116,"journal":{"name":"2008 First International Symposium on Applied Sciences on Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126466205","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To achieve higher scalability, adaptability, and robustness than ever before, we propose new network architecture in this paper. The architecture consists of the physical network layer, service overlay network layer, and common network layer mediating them. Nodes and organized networks behave in a self-organizing manner where they operate on local information and interact with each other to provide network services to users and applications. We also allow inter-layer interaction through the common network layer for a network system to be self-organized as a whole and effectively and efficiently react to unexpected failure.","PeriodicalId":435116,"journal":{"name":"2008 First International Symposium on Applied Sciences on Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127395279","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is assumed that estimates obtained from the GPS receiver are correct if the GPS quality is good. Therefore estimates from the GPS receiver serves as a primary input into the integrated system whenever both the GPS receiver is on and the signal quality is good. The Suboptimal estimation technique for the DR sensor is based on particle filtering. The DR module takes inputs from an accelerometer based pedometer and a particle filtering method is used for estimating the state of the DR sensor. A sensor fusion model incorporating an exponential smoothing-based smoother/filter/predictor is finally used to integrate the DR sensor and the GPS receiver. The output of the sensor fusion algorithm is constructed as a function of the GPS receiver and DR sensor. At any state, higher weight is assigned to the sensor with minimum error. GPS positioning is weighted more heavily as long as the GPS parameters (DOP, number of satellites, signal quality) indicates good and reliable performance.","PeriodicalId":435116,"journal":{"name":"2008 First International Symposium on Applied Sciences on Biomedical and Communication Technologies","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126112446","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
