In this article, the fragment is classified as part of the manuscript group *HKRFS, and an outline of text variants of this group\u0000 is given. The fragment is the only East middle German witness of this group.

They are made following the same template as the well known fragmentary "Kirchenväterteppich" held at the Kunstgewerbemuseum\u0000 Berlin. The New York fragments allow for a more complete reconstruction of the pictorial/textual programme and underscore its importance for the reception of Freidank. Drawing on the concept of 'trope ceremony' (Tropusfeier), it analyses dialogue as a means of liturgical poetics. By studying manuscripts,\u0000 texts and spatial arrangements, it shows how in the Latin West the introductory introit tropes 'Hodie cantandus est' and 'Quem queritis in presepe' were used for expressing varying theological, sacramental and institutional aspects in liturgical performance.

Guiding this understanding is the observation that the concept of tolerance derived from 'Willehalm' does not do justice to 'Graf Rudolf', which has not received much attention until now\u0000 due to the precarious situation regarding traditional sources. Taking account of the particularities specific to its tradition, the text is at the same time read as a solitary example of the interaction between the religious and the secular in Middle High German literature.
