Three periods of strap dress styles defined based on fifteen years of research into materials and techniques inform skills repatriation for Indigenous artists and decolonization directions for museum research. Results validate models for ensembles true to those worn by Anishinaabe grandmothers for use in workshops by collaborators Neil Oppendike and Siobhan Marks. Broad regional northern and southern dress styles are identified, and the Mapping Anishinaabe Regalia project is introduced.","PeriodicalId":43437,"journal":{"name":"WINTERTHUR PORTFOLIO-A JOURNAL OF AMERICAN MATERIAL CULTURE","volume":"55 1","pages":"121 - 185"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46434486","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These typically white stitchers demonstrated a potent sense of needlework’s capacities to provoke and to bind. But this stitchwork objectified enslaved figures and tethered Blackness to supplication and suffering even as it was directed primarily at cultivating white women’s sympathetic, self-directed subjectivity, enabling them to move from the home into economic and sociopolitical spheres.","PeriodicalId":43437,"journal":{"name":"WINTERTHUR PORTFOLIO-A JOURNAL OF AMERICAN MATERIAL CULTURE","volume":"55 1","pages":"85 - 120"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43628346","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
