{"title":"Potato Value Chain Analysis in Highland of Guji Zone, Southern Oromia, Ethiopia","authors":"Tekle Bobo Tolassa, Tesfu Nega Bedada","doi":"10.11648/j.ebm.20230901.11","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.11648/j.ebm.20230901.11","url":null,"abstract":": Potato plays a significant role in the national system and channels differ for different areas. Production of potato by smallholder farmers of the in highland parts of Guji zone districts are mainly for house consumption and market which is the most important and widely known cash crop of the area but there was lack of properly functioning marketing system and this often resulted in lower producers’ price. Therefore, this study focused on identifying potato market chain actors and their channels and factors that affect the volume of potato market. The target population was 14547 household farmers of which 141 producer households were selected using simple random sampling ad 24 traders and 13 consumers were selected purposively. Data were collected from both primary and secondary sources. Secondary data were gathered from district agriculture and rural development offices and trade and industry offices. Both descriptive and econometric analyses were employed for data analysis. The study indicated that, out of the total potato produced in 20120/21 cropping season of 6538 quintal, 89.8% of the product was supplied to the market in the study area. The result showed that about six marketing channels were identified in transferring 5897 quintals of potato, where, 38.92%, 26.13%, 11.2% and 23.75% were sold to wholesaler, retailers, collectors and consumers respectively. Result of a multiple linear regression model indicated that Age, potato production experience, amount consumed, quantity of potato produced, information access, off farm income and credit access were variables significantly affected volume of potato supplied to market in the study area. Production constraints of shortage of improved seed supply, disease and credit availability and marketing constrains of low price, and poor linkage with actors and lower consumer demand were identified. Therefore, improving seed supply problem, cooperative management, strengthening market information delivery system, post-harvest potato handling are intervention needed to boast potato production and marketing in the study area.","PeriodicalId":434269,"journal":{"name":"European Business & Management","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125691201","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The descriptive statistics and factor analysis were used in the analysis of the data. Artificial Intelligence, an aspect of big data analysis was also used to gauge the sentiments of the identified constraints across the Nigerian internet space. This study identified major business constraints in Nigeria using factor analysis. Of the fifteen (18) constraints identified in extant literatures and considered in this study, four main constraints predominantly featured in this present study across the three sectors as well as the whole economy: insecurity, high/multiple taxes, extortion/corruption and high bank charges. The major constraints identified in the various sectors of the Nigerian economy are those perceived to be under the purview and control of government. The next most serious set of constraints were predominantly those within the purview and control of businesses: while the variables that predominantly featured as the third set of constraints are those related to labour and policy issues. The study used categorical regression model to fit the relationship between productivity and business constraints. The findings reveal that six of the eighteen constraints have negative and significant effect on productivity across the sectors: unclear economic law, low demand, labour problems, unfavourable economic climate, high bank charges and sector have significant effect on productivity. Lack of knowledge/training was however found to have positive and significant effect on productivity. The findings in this study will guide the Central bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the various level of government in making policies that will aid survival of businesses. Identifying the major business constraints for the whole economy will guide the CBN in making decisions on general business interventions while the constraints identified across the sectors will guide the CBN in making sector specific interventions especially in the agricultural and industrial sectors.","PeriodicalId":434269,"journal":{"name":"European Business & Management","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126493831","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The objective of this study was to assess the effect of service quality on customer satisfaction in the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia branches in Wolaita Sodo town. For this purpose, 383 respondents were selected from target population and 22 item likert scaled SERVPERF instrument questionnaires were distributed and 344 valid responses were analyzed. The correlation analysis indicated that there were positive and significant relationship between all service quality dimensions and customer satisfaction. Regression analysis which was performed to study the effect of service quality on customer satisfaction found that four service quality dimensions: namely, empathy, responsiveness, reliability, and assurance were positively and significantly affect customer satisfaction and the tangibles dimension was insignificant for analyses. Compared with other quality dimensions in SERVPERF instrument, empathy has high effect on customer satisfaction. The bank is recommended to work hard in all quality aspects and give more personal attention to customers, understand the interest of customers, care for their customers, and give prompt service.","PeriodicalId":434269,"journal":{"name":"European Business & Management","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-02-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126737000","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the need to identify major target areas of intervention remains major research concerns in terms of constraints and challenges of businesses in Nigeria. This study therefore was aimed at identifying major business constraints in Nigeria. The stratified random sample of 1070 small, medium and large manufacturing and non-manufacturing firms in all 36 states in Nigeria and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) was used for the study. The study found that lack of technical know-how constitutes about 37.4% of business constraints in Nigeria, followed by unfavorable business climate contributing about 12.3% and access to finance constituting about 6.5%. Based on these findings, the study recommends more intervention in the area of technical know-how in terms of material input, equipment and labour related concerns. Improving policies as well as political system in the country will further improve business survival in Nigeria. Further studies may be required to determine other business constraints bedeviling Nigerian businesses that were not captured in this study.","PeriodicalId":434269,"journal":{"name":"European Business & Management","volume":"42 12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115877664","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
