Seven subjects (five men, two women) were tested. A regression model was used to assess the degree of accuracy in predicting the actual PMD angle from the voltage on the tilt gage. It is shown that a change of 1 V in the tilt gage resulted in decreases of 7.67 degrees on the PMD. The regression model explained 96.8% of the variability in PMD angle. The tilt sensor provides an accurate measure of the angle of tilt of the pelvis. The technique provides continuous monitoring of pelvic tilt in a sitting position.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":434209,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1991 IEEE Seventeenth Annual Northeast Bioengineering Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132681374","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Spectral results obtained from the animal models were compared with those obtained from a computer simulation based on morphometric and hemorheologic data compiled for the 4 kg cat. Spectral features examined included the frequency of the first modulus minimum (indicative of the pulse wave reflection and/or pulse wave velocity) and characteristic impedance (average resistance to pulsatile flow). High flow (shunt-open/shunt-closed ratio>2.1) resulted in a slight spectral shift to the right with little change in characteristic impedance in both the lamb and the passive computer simulation models. High pressure (mean pulmonary artery pressure >28 mmHg) in the lamb model resulted in a marked shift to the right with a doubling of characteristic impedance.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":434209,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1991 IEEE Seventeenth Annual Northeast Bioengineering Conference","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134485644","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The pressure-volume characteristics of the bladder or the bellows is used as the basis for the pressure based control of a CCA system. The controller was tested during six animal experiments on dogs and was stable in both the spontaneous and mechanical models of ventilation. The system developed is more acceptable to the practicing anesthetist accustomed to the direct feel of the anesthetic bladder acting upon the patient, both in case of assisted and manual control of ventilation. The development of this anesthesia delivery system eliminates the problem of solving complex multi-compartment mathematical equations in order to predict the flow of oxygen, anesthetic agent, and nitrous oxide necessary for maintaining the desired level of alveolar oxygen concentration, end-tidal anesthetic concentration, and the pressure inside the bladder or the bellows.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":434209,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1991 IEEE Seventeenth Annual Northeast Bioengineering Conference","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124922262","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The authors describe the data acquisition, computer analysis, and statistical treatment of the evoked response waveforms obtained from the dentate gyrus upon stimulation of the perforant path before and after the potentiation process in two diet groups. Control animals (25%-25% protein diet) and prenatally malnourished animals (6%-25% protein diet) were employed. Comparisons between the control and prenatally malnourished animals indicate that the efficacy of synaptic transmission was significantly decreased in those animals exposed to the prenatal protein insult.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":434209,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1991 IEEE Seventeenth Annual Northeast Bioengineering Conference","volume":"231 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114430218","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is shown that there is a difference in the responses under inspiratory resistive loading between CO/sub 2/ and dead-space breathing. The difference in response suggests the existence of an adaptive behavior of the controller. Chemoreflex controls respiration, but it is not above being modified, or adapting, to different situations to produce more effective breathing.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":434209,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1991 IEEE Seventeenth Annual Northeast Bioengineering Conference","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121893111","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The program uses the back propagation algorithm to train the network and to classify input data based on the subject's posed facial expression. Training and testing were performed with multiple individuals. The network was trained on a set consisting of 34 happy and 34 sad images from five different subjects. Additionally, the network was tested with images of subjects which were not included in training. In this case, training was performed using 24 happy and 24 sad images of three subjects. Testing was performed using ten happy and ten sad images of two new subjects. In preliminary testing, the network responded correctly for 85% of the 20 test cases. The ability of the network to generalize this discrimination successfully to new individuals is also demonstrated.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":434209,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1991 IEEE Seventeenth Annual Northeast Bioengineering Conference","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123862650","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The system is designed to approximately mimic the sound localization behavior of the owl. The network is trained in a supervised learning mode. The subjects produce this EEG data while performing five selected cognitive tasks. The objective of the system is to identify these tasks based on the salient features embedded in the raw EEG signals. Also, due to the demanding requirements of some environments (such as jet fighter cockpits), achieving the state recognition in near real-time is critical. Initial experiments show the system is able to correctly classify the EEG signals from the subjects 100% of the time. The classification delay is approximately 15 seconds due to the initial 10 seconds of data gathering and 5 seconds of network feedforward processing delay. It is also found that the trained network can recognize the subjects' EEG days after the initial training took place.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":434209,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1991 IEEE Seventeenth Annual Northeast Bioengineering Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121810402","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The parent and two daughter branches are of equal length and diameter, describing a T-junction rotated by 90 degrees . The flow is considered laminar and incompressible, which is reasonable for small tidal volumes. The solution has been limited to two-dimensional channels, merely by the constraint of computational time. The equations are solved using a finite-difference formulation. Depending on the Reynolds and Strouhal numbers, it was possible to direct larger fractions of the tidal volume to either of the daughter ducts.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":434209,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1991 IEEE Seventeenth Annual Northeast Bioengineering Conference","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124236653","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
