While this concept is generally considered to have originated in the 1960s with the work of Jones and Whyte, there is evidence that the basics of placemaking were present in the late 19th and early 20th century. The role of female pioneers in hospitality and leisure placemaking has remained relatively unexplored. These women who made industry-changing contributions to catering and culinary arts, food safety, hospitality architecture, and hotel operations helped to create both public and private spaces for leisure that promoted the basic tenets of placemaking. Their narratives will be examined in the context of historical benchmarking for leisure placemaking in this chapter, which details the lives, accomplishments, and lasting legacies of the foremothers of the hospitality industry. Provided in a case study format, this chapter provides leisure educators with materials for the classroom while examining the concept of placemaking from a historical viewpoint. This chapter provides insight for future research into the role of women in placemaking, both historically and in contemporary times.","PeriodicalId":434009,"journal":{"name":"Women, leisure and tourism: self-actualization and empowerment through the production and consumption of experience","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125397473","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recent years have seen a small but growing increase in sport participation and interest among older women, which provides opportunities to foster health and well-being for this group. This chapter provides historical context for understanding women's sport in the USA and synthesizes the literature related to older women's participation in sport to include benefits, motivations, and societal implications. It discusses relevant theories and models that can aid scholars in understanding and studying women's sport in later life. Finally, it discusses implications for practice including the importance of facilitating sport participation for older women (in terms of public health and social justice), as well as recommendations for professionals who are seeking to facilitate effective and efficient programmes.","PeriodicalId":434009,"journal":{"name":"Women, leisure and tourism: self-actualization and empowerment through the production and consumption of experience","volume":"501 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123062453","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Creating a culture of consent for event tourism. 为活动旅游创造共识文化。

These festivals promise long-lasting personal transformation in what are often billed as modern-day rites of passage. Some scholars view Burning Man as the progenitor of all transformative festivals, although the decommodified nature of the now 75,000-person annual arts and culture event marks it as distinct in several key ways. Foremost among these is the official code of conduct for the community known as the 10 Principles. A grassroots commitment to consent, known as 11th Principle Consent, also distinguishes the community from outwardly similar festivals. Within the liminal space of the event, these rules supplant many of the hegemonic structures of everyday life, making Burning Man, and its global network of smaller events, a fascinating case study from which to explore the creation of alternative cultural norms and their effects. This chapter explores the evolution and implementation of a culture of consent through in-depth interviews with the female-identifying Burners who drove the creation of this movement. It also traces the development of community-protected safe spaces to explore and grow. The liminal nature of the tourism event experience makes such an experimental culture possible and serves as a unique case study for scholars interested in the transformative potential of tourism events.","PeriodicalId":434009,"journal":{"name":"Women, leisure and tourism: self-actualization and empowerment through the production and consumption of experience","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123859520","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Autoethnography is applied as a methodology to analyse research data gathered from five college-educated, urban, upper-caste Indian women including the author herself. Autoethnography allows for the interrogation of broader processes of inequalities that shape lived experiences, particularly the interpretation of sociocultural contexts of life. The participants perceived leisure time embedded in socializing, religious and cultural gatherings, and family and community events. These collectively form the place, space, and events of women's leisure. Without assigning leisure a defined personal time, their leisure experiences carried layered meanings. It was a location of conformity, resistance, negotiations, desire, conflict, and transformation. Outside the realm of traditional sociocultural experiences, the women were becoming conscious of choice and decision-making capacity in their personal leisure. Their narratives provide insights into the experience of leisure with the nuances of strategies and agency.","PeriodicalId":434009,"journal":{"name":"Women, leisure and tourism: self-actualization and empowerment through the production and consumption of experience","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115330576","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To fill this gap, recent research proposes to include gender as a significant aspect in leisure paradigms. The chapter aims to analyse gender differences in the use of leisure time within the Italian context using data periodically produced by official statistics. Data, collected over time, make it possible to observe the changes occurring in the way men and women spend their leisure time. The chapter is structured according to the main dimensions of leisure, such as social relationships, sports practice, tourism, cultural participation, and satisfaction with leisure time. To observe gender differences, statistical methods (descriptive and multivariate analysis) were implemented. The results highlight the existence of strong differences in the way in which men and women spend their leisure time. Gender differences are often linked to demographic or sociocultural characteristics, such as age, level of education, or economic conditions. Results presented in the chapter could be used to frame future research aimed at solving weakness and to fill information gaps in Italian leisure gender studies.","PeriodicalId":434009,"journal":{"name":"Women, leisure and tourism: self-actualization and empowerment through the production and consumption of experience","volume":"206 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122600276","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Turkey currently serves as the new home to over 3.6 million refugees. Resettlement is particularly challenging for Syrian women. In addition to their patriarchal-assigned gender roles, women refugees encounter multidimensional difficulties. Unlike their male counterparts, they face overwhelming language barriers due to culturally imposed restrictions to their education in Turkey. Previous studies indicate women refugees have low levels of well-being and life satisfaction, as well as increased risk of depression. This chapter examines the types, practices, and benefits of leisure participation among Syrian refugee women in Turkey. Its findings reveal that throughout the resettlement process, leisure plays many roles, such as relieving trauma, increasing well-being and mental health, and supporting their integration into society and the labour market. Despite the abundance of learning opportunities, research on the outcomes of their participation is limited. Therefore, future studies should also focus on the effects of their participation in education to address the needs of Syrian women refugees. However, further research should be conducted on participation constraints to establish ways of encouraging refugee women's involvement in educational activities.","PeriodicalId":434009,"journal":{"name":"Women, leisure and tourism: self-actualization and empowerment through the production and consumption of experience","volume":"68 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122180189","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This chapter, using autoethnography for data collection and contextualized to pilgrimage tropes, is viewed through the lens of Jafari's Tourist Model. The six stages of the model are applied to my travels as a Zoroastrian woman: the terrors and joys of 'solo' but in a group, motivations for undertaking pilgrimage, and feelings while on pilgrimage through journeying to Iran. Diasporic identity with natal 'homelands', self-identity, and associations with important markers as a Zoroastrian woman are probed, along with the ideas inherent in pilgrimages of the 'mind', liberating one from the need to travel physically. Cementing shibboleths of economic independence, decision making, choice, and agency challenge perceptions of travel and generalizations about ethnic women's leisure. The lasting impact of 'pilgrimage' and the confidence it instilled to travel 'solo' and shape future leisure experiences around self-identity and religiosity act as a clarion call for assimilation, but not subsummation.","PeriodicalId":434009,"journal":{"name":"Women, leisure and tourism: self-actualization and empowerment through the production and consumption of experience","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129963831","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Older women and leisure. 老年妇女和休闲。

Being female and an older adult makes the leisure experiences of older women complex; fighting against not only patriarchal views of the world, but also the ageist stereotypes that say this is who older women are and how they should act. The chapter explains how several sexist and ageist discourses contribute to older women's understandings of what activities are appropriate and accessible to them. Using a lens of intersectionality allows for the complexity of older women's leisure and tourism experiences to be more thoroughly explained by accounting for multiple social identities. The homogenizing and oppressive nature of patriarchal views, like body image, ethic of care, and ageism, are suppressive of the possible identities and full range of leisure opportunities available to older women. As the general population continues to age, a better understanding of the complexities of older women's experiences becomes imperative. This chapter also provides ideas for how the leisure and tourism communities can begin to correct the missteps currently happening in our fields.","PeriodicalId":434009,"journal":{"name":"Women, leisure and tourism: self-actualization and empowerment through the production and consumption of experience","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130019404","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While the digital world is traditionally thought of as a masculine space, the number of female online gamers continues to increase. In the online gamer subculture, however, female gamers are often invisible, primarily because the famous gamers and the main characters of video games are typically male. Video games tend to focus on female characters' physical appearance, rather than their skills, thus widening the gender gap, as well as relegating women to secondary, supporting roles. This chapter addresses the primary question of whether women are 'tourists' in this currently masculine space, or if they are already full members of the gaming world. By looking at online female gamers in Hungary and through analysis of an online questionnaire, it was determined that the female presence in online gaming is increasing, in spite of misogyny and harassment.","PeriodicalId":434009,"journal":{"name":"Women, leisure and tourism: self-actualization and empowerment through the production and consumption of experience","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116894830","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
