Tufegdzic (1881-1960), a teacher, priest and writer, was Janko\u0000 Veselinovic's son-in-law. After graduation from Sabac Grammar School (in\u0000 1897) and Teacher Training School in Aleksinac (in 1900), he first found\u0000 employment as a teacher. In 1906 Tufegdzic married Persida, Janko\u0000 Veselinovic's daughter, and in 1908 he was ordained priest. He served in\u0000 Badovinci in Macva District, and beginning in 1936, at St Mark's Church in\u0000 Belgrade, where he was dean (1941-1954). During 1931 he visited the holy\u0000 places in Palestine and became a pilgrim (hajji). Tufegdzic was a prolific\u0000 writer, contributor to Orthodoxy, The Voice of the Church, The Wreath, The\u0000 Bosnian Fairy, The Wheel Dance, The New Spark (Pravoslavlje, Glas crkve,\u0000 Venac, Bosanska vila, Kolo, Nova iskra) and other journals, the author of a\u0000 brochure, two novellas and a short story collection. As the heir to\u0000 Veselinovic?s manuscript legacy, during his lifetime D. Tufegdzic took\u0000 meticulous care of his father-in-law?s heritage. In The Wreath during 1913\u0000 and 1914 he published four notes from Veselinovic?s life (?Janko and the\u0000 Operator?, ?Janko and the Animal Doctor?, ?Janko?s Lottery Ticket? and\u0000 ?Janko Responds to the Sergeant?), and they resemble the notes we present\u0000 here: ?From Janko?s Childhood?, ?Janko?s Last Christmas?, ?Janko?s\u0000 Gallantry? and ?Janko?s Last Living Moments?). The manuscripts are preserved\u0000 in the Intermunicipal Historical Archives in Sabac within the Presents and\u0000 Purchases Collection. The notes were edited according to their date of\u0000 origin and their call numbers in the Sabac Archives: ?From Janko?s\u0000 Childhood?, Belgrade, February 9, 1950, Collection (No. 18), ?Janko?s Last\u0000 Christmas?, Belgrade, February 9, 1950 (No. 19), ?Janko?s Gallantry?,\u0000 Belgrade, February 12, 1950 (No. 20), and ?Janko?s Last Living Moments?,\u0000 Belgrade, February 13, 1950 (No. 21). The notes were written on chequered\u0000 paper 21x33,5 cm in size. Although Tufegdzic wrote his memoirs of Janko\u0000 Veselinovic from a considerable time distance, his testimonies can be\u0000 considered authentic, because he got them directly from Janko?s daughter and\u0000 his wife Persida.

It is a work of\u0000 complex structure which features a harmonious intertwining of information\u0000 from the biography of queen and nun Helen with an extensive exposition of\u0000 the author. The work depicts the Queen?s early commencement of good deeds:\u0000 she fed the poor, clothed the naked, hosted the homeless and richly donated\u0000 to churches and priests. ?She was not pleased only with this,? says the Life\u0000 at a later place, ?but she also added another virtue to that; she ordered\u0000 that in all of her lands the daughters of poor parents should be assembled,\u0000 and feeding them at her court, she brought them up in all good manners and\u0000 handiwork befitting the female sex.? This place drew critical attention very\u0000 early on, having been interpreted as the foundation of the first girls\u0000 school in Serbia, and it remains the most popular part of the Life until the\u0000 present day. However, that passage can only be found in one copy of the Life\u0000 of Queen Helen - the most recent one, from 1780 (The Library of the Serbian\u0000 Patriarchate in Belgrade, Cod. 51). That circumstance, as well as the fact\u0000 that the quoted passage contains words not used by Archbishop Daniel II, may\u0000 lead us to a conclusion that it is actually an interpolation into the Life?s\u0000 original text. The story of a girls school at Queen Helen court was taken\u0000 from Zaharija Orfelin?s book The History of Peter the Great, printed in\u0000 1772, which copiously described Tsarina Catherine II?s merits in educating\u0000 female and poor children in Russia. The information from Orfelin?s book was\u0000 transposed and adapted to the style of Daniel II?s text, and the\u0000 characteristics of the enlightened Russian Tsarina were projected onto the\u0000 person of Serbian Queen Helen. That was done very skilfully, due to which\u0000 this interpolation in The Life of Queen Helen has so far been undetected.

Aiming to present a complete image of the semantic\u0000 transformation of these loanwords, the Serbian language, literary and\u0000 historical material is compared with the relevant Turkish data. In Turkish\u0000 the lexeme deli represents both an adjective and a noun, while in Serbian,\u0000 there is the adjective deli and the noun delija. The lexeme deli occurs very\u0000 often in Serbian folk poems as attribute attached to the name of a brave\u0000 hero (deli-Radivoje, deli-Marko) and is also an indispensable attribute\u0000 attached to the names of Oguz heroes in the heroic epic poem The Book of\u0000 Dede Korkut. In these epic works the adjective deli is used in the same\u0000 meaning in both languages, meaning brave, fearless. The semes brave,\u0000 fearless from the semantic content of lexeme delija, meaning a member of a\u0000 cavalry unit of the Ottoman army, have induced secondary meanings brave man,\u0000 hero; strong, personable man. The primary meaning (crazy) which the\u0000 adjective deli has in Turkish is at the periphery of polysemantic structure\u0000 in Serbian, confirmed just as a regional word. Lexemes deli and delija in\u0000 Serbian and deli (adjective and noun) in Turkish have been independently\u0000 semantically developed according to universal process of polysemy in both\u0000 languages.
