The authors compare Shannon Entropy, Kolmogorov Complexity (approximated by Lempel-Ziv Compressibility) and statistical complexity, and observe that regions corresponding to genes have consistently different complexity measures (i.e., they are more regular) than those regions that do not have any gene associated with them. This provides insight on how to develop new tools for automated DNA analysis.","PeriodicalId":433659,"journal":{"name":"3rd IEEE International Work-Conference on Bioinspired Intelligence","volume":"138 9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128832286","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The success of this surgery procedure, depends on the correct location of the neurostimulator device over the basal ganglia area (i.e. thalamus and globus pallidus). This paper presents a software system DEEPBRAINnav as support tool in Parkinson surgery. This software serves as support to the neurological specialist in DBS surgery. DEEPBRAINnav is composed mainly by two applications. First, it allows to the medical specialist, online recognition of brain structures by the analysis of signals from microelectrode recordings (MER), as well as analyses offline databases allowing the inclusion of new trained classifiers for automatic identification of thalamus location. Secondly, the software includes an interactive application to perform the tracking of the microelectrode device, allowing to the neurosurgeon visualize the path and real location of the microelectrode device implant process. DEEPBRAINnav has been tested for Deep Brain Stimulation surgeries performed at the Institute for Epilepsy and Parkinson of the Eje Cafetero (Colombia). The results shows an accurate tracking of the microelectrode implanting process and achieving positive identifications of the Subthalamic Nucleus (STN) over to 85% using a naive Bayes classifier. Furthermore, develop applications for image and signals guide surgery procedures, allows to the neurologist obtain more support information of a surgery procedure given, with the aim to increase the robustness of the DBS surgery.","PeriodicalId":433659,"journal":{"name":"3rd IEEE International Work-Conference on Bioinspired Intelligence","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114897241","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This feature is granted by the ability of partitioning a sequential application into smaller subproblems with high computing requirements; those subproblems can be executed in parallel by a graphics processing unit (GPU) and partial results can be transferred to main memory where the central processing unit (CPU) collects and presents them. On the other hand, Fractal Image Coding (FIC) is a lossy compression technique with promising features, however it has been relegated due to its large coding time. The present article propose a parallel implementation of FIC on a GPGPU system which achieves an acceleration on coding time of about 129 times.","PeriodicalId":433659,"journal":{"name":"3rd IEEE International Work-Conference on Bioinspired Intelligence","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128839568","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the challenges of this area lies in the segmentation of the species vocalizations. Recordings acquired in natural habitats are contaminated with the sounds emitted by other species and different kinds of background noise. If the data is “clean” a robust segmentation is feasible, otherwise a pre-processing stage must be carefully performed in order to recover relevant information over the noise effect. In this manuscript, we propose the use of the Karnuhen-Loeve Transform noise reduction algorithm as an additional pre-processing sub-stage. We also propose a segmentation method based on the Fundamental Frequency detection and Voiced/Unvoiced segmentation, implemented with the Voice Analysis software Praat. Preliminary results show that the proposed pre-processing scheme improves the segmentation process, with results comparable to the commercial software Song Scope.","PeriodicalId":433659,"journal":{"name":"3rd IEEE International Work-Conference on Bioinspired Intelligence","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114380100","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We propose to improve face recognition with the Permutation Coding Neural Classifier (PCNC) using a special type of distortions of original images (for example, rotations) to train the neural network. We applied the distortions to the initial image database (the FRAV2D image database) and produced an extended rotated version of it that allowed us to improve the training process of PCNC neural classifier. The results obtained show a better recognition rate in comparison to Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Iterative Closest Point (ICP).","PeriodicalId":433659,"journal":{"name":"3rd IEEE International Work-Conference on Bioinspired Intelligence","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126765938","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Current warning systems for these phenomena are based on fixed instrumentation located at certain points through the river or indirectly, through remote measurements; as a result, the information they provide is limited, as it lacks real-time and precise data about the event location and its speed. In this paper, we introduce a set of algorithms and protocols for debris flows detection in rivers, using a wireless sensor network. The proposed detection protocol is distributed and decentralized, as it does not rely on a central coordinator to decide on the presence of the event. The proposed algorithms and protocols were evaluated on a simulator, in order to evaluate its performance. Results show that the algorithms are capable of detecting the phenomenon and alert people in the danger area with enough anticipation to prevent a tragedy.","PeriodicalId":433659,"journal":{"name":"3rd IEEE International Work-Conference on Bioinspired Intelligence","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123363514","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
