The OSACA consortium (the name OSACA stands for: Open System Architecture for Controls within Automation Systems) had developed the methodology and the technology to build such open controllers. Within the 4th framework, the EC has launched a continuation project, named IDAS-OSACA, to help the dissemination process for the results achieved previously by the consortium. The article gives a summary on the external (superior and inferior) communication means applied with the OSACA controllers. The authors have prepared the article based on their review on the former OSACA project deliverables.","PeriodicalId":433593,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 1997 IEEE International Workshop on Factory Communication Systems. Energy conservation therefore becomes a major constraint. Classical access protocols are either not energy conserving or lead to unacceptable delays. In a previous work (I. Chlamtac et al., 1996), we proposed three new classes of energy conserving access protocols designed to minimize delay while drastically reducing the energy required at the mobile node. We propose an extension to one of those protocols which greatly reduces the worst case delay experienced by the packets.","PeriodicalId":433593,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 1997 IEEE International Workshop on Factory Communication Systems. {"title":"An Express model for the description of fieldbus devices","authors":"G. Cena, C. Demartini, L. Durante, A. Valenzano","doi":"10.1109/WFCS.1997.634287","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/WFCS.1997.634287","url":null,"abstract":"The paper deals with the definition of a device description model which takes into account the most significant features of the fieldbus devices currently available on the market and included in the EN50170 European standard. The basic concepts that can be found in the relevant international standards have been taken as a basis for the development of the model. The model is formally described in Express since it is a well assessed data modeling language for which a graphical subset also exists. Several tools for processing Express models are widely available nowadays on different platforms. Hence, the model can be translated into a corresponding representation for a specific host language with relatively little effort. The basic aim is that of providing a common understanding of the device features through the structured organization of data, parameters, event and actions so that interoperability is guaranteed independently of the specific fieldbus technology used in the network. Each device is described using the entity relationship approach and takes advantage of the inheritance property which leads to a simple and immediate description of new device features which can be added to the hierarchy without affecting the existing structure of the model. As an example, the paper also shows how the proposed general model can be refined to describe a particular class of real devices including more specific attributes and events.","PeriodicalId":433593,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 1997 IEEE International Workshop on Factory Communication Systems. Synchronous producer-consumer transactions for real-time distributed process control 用于实时分布式过程控制的同步生产者-消费者事务

{"title":"Synchronous producer-consumer transactions for real-time distributed process control","authors":"A. Di Stefano, L. L. Lo Bello, C. These devices communicate through particular common bus networks, called fieldbuses, using communication protocols developed to guarantee precise delivery times for the variables transmitted. In process control environments, different control units may need to share the data collected by a sensor, or to broadcast processed data to the various actuation units. Thus, transactions involving one producer and several consumers of a real time variable have to be supported. The transaction model proposed is based on the definition of a group associated to each real time variable. A group is a set of entities comprising the producer of the variable and its consumers. The paper proposes a time constrained group communication approach for real time distributed process control, and presents two transaction models suitable for the scenarios typical of Industrial Process Control & Measurement Systems. In particular, the authors focus on the mapping of the group communication model onto the data link layer protocol of the IEC/ISA FieldBus, as it provides a series of facilities which help the application process to check that some of the required time constraints are met.","PeriodicalId":433593,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 1997 IEEE International Workshop on Factory Communication Systems. To meet these requirements, a communication protocol adapted to the characteristics of data to be transferred has to be chosen. Concerning high reliability, additional measures have to be taken, since current protocols of the field-bus domain do not provide sufficient fault tolerance capabilities, especially with regard to fault detection and redundancy management. The article introduces a system architecture and fault-tolerant protocol mechanisms based on the communication protocol CAN. The system is suitable for large-scale control systems, which have to cope with both periodically and spontaneously occurring data.","PeriodicalId":433593,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 1997 IEEE International Workshop on Factory Communication Systems. In order to enable the Profibus interface S/W to handle many application tasks and communication services, two kinds of real time/multi tasking operating system, CTask and OS-9, are utilized. Using the Profibus interface S/W, the study develops an experimental model of an automation system, and evaluates the message delay in the user layer. The message delay is measured with respect to the changes of message length, message generation period and TRT (Token Rotation Time). The outcomes of the experiment are compared with those of the simulation model which comprise only the physical and data link layers of Profibus. The study investigates the relationship between the message delay in the data link layer and the message delay up to the user layer. Based on the results, the study suggests some factors that should be considered when a Profibus based automation system is designed and implemented.","PeriodicalId":433593,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 1997 IEEE International Workshop on Factory Communication Systems. It is a step in the evaluation of functional and performance properties of CAN applications. We first show how an external view of CAN controller functionalities can be held in Z. Z is based on set theory and first order logic and is very expressive: a unique notation allows the specification of data structures and operations. An internal view as also given and analyzed. Validation of the CAN controller specification is done and a property is shown; we demonstrate that this specification implements the satisfaction of the highest priority message being transmitted first.","PeriodicalId":433593,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 1997 IEEE International Workshop on Factory Communication Systems. Integration of fieldbus systems into distributed object oriented systems means to treat the first one as an integral part of the last one. This integration has a methodological and a technical viewpoint. The first is related to the integration of models describing the application and its management, while the latter is related to the realisation of an interface in software (and hardware) between two worlds of information processing. The paper describes the last aspect. The integration of fieldbus systems into distributed systems gains importance for the realisation of heterogeneous information processing systems in companies. Using this approach, online data from and about a process is available in various departments of the company and can be used for decision making. First we explain the need and possibility for this integration, and the technologies and models used, are described. Next, an application example is described. Finally, some conclusions and areas of necessary further research work are shown.","PeriodicalId":433593,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 1997 IEEE International Workshop on Factory Communication Systems. Unfortunately this interconnection raises several issues that the solutions found so far have not been able to solve satisfactorily. The authors propose the use of a wireless LAN based on the IEEE 802.11 draft standard as a backbone system. Suitable modifications are introduced in this draft standard in order to meet FieldBus communication requirements. The problems of integrating the traffic generated by FieldBus systems, which is notorious for urgent time constraints, are dealt with and solved by proposing a simply achieved modification to the 802.11 MAC protocol. Through simulation analysis they then present a performance evaluation of the interconnection system and the cost of the modification proposed.","PeriodicalId":433593,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 1997 IEEE International Workshop on Factory Communication Systems.
