The novelty of the research lies in conducting a detailed theoretical study of literary criticism publications on the theory of genres, on the history of the comic book genre and the genre of the novel by Russian and foreign scholars, which made it possible to identify similarities and differences between the graphic novel and the comic book based on the dialogue between text and image, as well as to consider the graphic novel as a modification of the genre of the novel inheriting its main characteristics (the presence of the narrative structure and plot, the development of the main character, the chronotope, the dialogue with modernity, etc.). The authors of the study, defining the comic book as a meta-genre, come to the conclusion that at present, it seems reasonable to consider the graphic novel not as a subgenre of the comic book, but as an independent hybrid genre undergoing evolution. It is the first time that the subgenres of the graphic novel have been distinguished on the basis of French-language and English-language works. As a result, it has been proved that the graphic novel can be defined as an independent genre that is already undergoing changes, breaking up into subgenres in which the tendency to the crossing of different genre forms is noticeable.","PeriodicalId":43335,"journal":{"name":"Theoretical and Practical Issues of Journalism","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135480699","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The scientific novelty of the study lies in using the training version of immediate constituents analysis in relation to the new language material, i.e., the specified work by Du Fu. Due to the large number of lines, the poem is divided by us into three parts containing eight lines and the ending. The results show that in each of the three parts, the fragments parallel in the horizontal and vertical directions amount to 17.8% and 64.29%; 35.71% and 57.14%; 25% and 48.21%, respectively. Thus, vertical symmetry dominates in the work under consideration. In particular, this is due to the fact that most of the fragments symmetrical in the horizontal direction have a local character. The role of parallel fragments as a means of coherence between the three parts of the poem was investigated. In the text of the entire poem, parallel fragments make up 70.88% of the 182 characters.","PeriodicalId":43335,"journal":{"name":"Theoretical and Practical Issues of Journalism","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135481192","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its theoretical significance consists in updating the issues of audiovisual translation (hereinafter AVT) and summarizing materials on cultural and pragmatic adaptation of audiovisual texts. The aim of the research is to solve the translation problems associated with overcoming both the linguistic barrier (transmission of realia, humor, reduced vocabulary) and the non-linguistic barrier (synchronization of source and target audiovisual codes) when translating TV series from English into Russian. The scientific novelty of the research lies in finding translation strategies for synchronizing original and translated texts related to phonetic, kinesthetic and time constraints of the audiovisual text. The results of the research obtained during a comparative analysis of the original texts and their translations showed the following: when translating realia, reduced vocabulary and humor, translators resort to functional replacements, explanations or elimination (neutralization of national and cultural specifics), depending on the context in each case. When solving the “over-text” problems of AVT related to the need to synchronize visual, sound and verbal signs of the source and target products, translators proceed primarily from orientation to the target linguoculture and adapt the source text in order to provide an adequate communicative and functional effect on the viewer, for which it is necessary sometimes to shorten the source text or completely change it.","PeriodicalId":43335,"journal":{"name":"Theoretical and Practical Issues of Journalism","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135481875","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The paper analyses the intentional structures of three campaign speeches of different political figures, Donald Trump, Kamala Harris and Joe Biden, in particular, where they thank their electorate for their support. Patterns in the construction of epideictic speeches were identified from the perspective of the intentionality analysis relying on the analysis of the intentional components inherent in the gratitude speeches in the framework of the election campaign in the form of a monologue. The scientific novelty is due to the fact that the intentional components of epideictic speeches reflecting the current trends of structuring the pre-election speech were identified, as well as the influence of the intentional structure of an utterance in pre-election discourse on the perception of speech by the recipient. As a result, it was proved that the gratitude speeches of political figures within the framework of the election campaign have not only common features from the point of view of intentionality analysis, but also differences, which are characterised by the stage of the election campaign.","PeriodicalId":43335,"journal":{"name":"Theoretical and Practical Issues of Journalism","volume":"157 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135481717","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The research is novel in that it is the first to systematize a variety of hyperbolic means in English-language fiction that allow achieving a certain emotional impact on the addressee. The paper analyzes the contexts of the use of exaggeration in the speech of 25 characters in the works of modern English writers: India Knight’s “Comfort and Joy” (2010), Sophie Kinsella’s “Finding Audrey” (2015) and “Love Your Life” (2020), and for the first time summarizes hyperbolic ways of expression in the maxims of modern English society. The study examines such hyperbolic means as hyperbole, hyperbolic metaphor, metonymy, irony, antihyperbole, meiosis and litotes. The results of the study showed that the hyperbolic ways contribute to the creation of a colorful image, comic effect, as well as an emotional and manipulative impact on the reader. The analyzed material revealed the existence of lexical, grammatical and stylistic ways of expressing hyperbolization, which are actively used in the speech of modern native speakers.","PeriodicalId":43335,"journal":{"name":"Theoretical and Practical Issues of Journalism","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135646282","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the course of the study, a range of such publications was established and the named terms, which had been interpreted in one or another way in the dictionaries and reference books in question, were identified. Statistical data on the volume of vocabulary in the publications under consideration were given in comparison with the number of morphological terms included in them. The ratio of independent and reference dictionary entries was determined, allowing the addressees of the dictionaries to establish the systemic, genus-species, relations between the morphological terms included in dictionaries and reference editions. Attention is drawn to the content and features of the construction of independent dictionary entries. The study is novel in that it is the first to analyse the morphological component of the main lexicographic publications on the terminology of the Russian language reflecting the classical and modern achievements of Russian grammatical thought. The obtained results showed that the terms of morphological science are not equally represented in the thesauruses of the main dictionaries on the terminology of the Russian language. This fact is explained by the total volume of terminological vocabulary of the publications examined, their genre features (encyclopaedia, reference book, educational dictionary, etc.), the purpose of creation, the nature of the addressee. One of the significant factors accounting for the difference between morphological terms in the main terminological dictionaries of the Russian language is the formation of new linguistic disciplines, new scientific schools and directions that develop their own metalanguage.","PeriodicalId":43335,"journal":{"name":"Theoretical and Practical Issues of Journalism","volume":"124 3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135645306","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of the study is to identify the differential features of explanation as a speech genre based on the material of television medical discourse. The study is novel in that it is the first to highlight the linguistic features that define the speech genre of explanation. As a result, it has been revealed that in the medical discourse in Russian, the genre of explanation is characterised at the pragmatic level by the adaptation of information for the audience of potential viewers. A trusting atmosphere is created by emphasising the status of the addresser. The pragmatic attitude toward explication simplicity is expressed in speech at all levels. The speech genre of explanation can be constructed according to the classical scheme on a “simple-to-complex” basis, but it is also possible to use the reverse technique.","PeriodicalId":43335,"journal":{"name":"Theoretical and Practical Issues of Journalism","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135745380","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study is based on the hypothesis that global news stories concerning events in cyberspace often receive a specific framing in the Russian media discourse due to both socio-cultural singularity and the peculiarities of spatial semantics expression in the Russian language. The scientific novelty of the study is determined by the fact that cyberspace representation in the mass media in Russian has not previously been the object of linguistic research, although new lexical units describing phenomena from the cybertechnology industry are being actively included both in the media discourse and in the common Russian language and require a systematic description. As a result of the study, the process of adapting the global news frame in the Russian-language media has been described for the first time taking into account lexical and word-formation models and linguocultural aspects. It has been found that the semantics of cyberspace is actualised within the framework of three thematic clusters: real, associative-background and conceptual locations described using borrowed vocabulary, authorial neologisms, metaphorisation and homonymy.","PeriodicalId":43335,"journal":{"name":"Theoretical and Practical Issues of Journalism","volume":"68 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135745382","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
