This problem is of vital importance, since propagation delays are omnipresent in wireless networks. The Foschini-Miljanic algorithm is provably stable if there are no time-delays in the execution of the algorithm. However, since the interference measurements are fed back to the transmitter by its corresponding receiver, time-delays are inevitably introduced into the system. This work presents a more realistic version of the well known Foschini-Miljanic algorithm for distributed power control since it considers the time-delays introduced to the system due to propagation delays. In both the continuous and discrete time cases we prove global stability of the system in the presence of propagation delays.","PeriodicalId":433215,"journal":{"name":"2008 47th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126426111","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A simple algorithm is proposed for the analysis of delay effects on the stability. Such an algorithm takes advantage of the particular structure of the dynamical interconnections of the model. The analysis shows that the model yields three fixed points, two of which are always unstable and one of which is sometimes stable. The stable fixed point corresponds to an equilibrium solution in which the leukemia population is kept below the cytogenetic remission level. This result implies that, during Gleevec treatment, the resulting anti-leukemia immune response can serve to control the leukemia population. However, the rate of approach to the stable fixed point is very slow, indicating that the immune response is largely ineffective at driving the leukemia population towards the stable fixed point. To extend the stability analysis with respect to the delay parameter, we conduct a global nonlinear analysis to demonstrate the existence of unbounded solutions. We provide sufficient conditions based on initial cell concentrations that guarantee unbounded solutions and comment on how these conditions can serve to predict whether Gleevec treatment will result in a sustained remission based on a patient¿s initial leukemia load and initial anti-leukemia T cell concentration.","PeriodicalId":433215,"journal":{"name":"2008 47th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114611073","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is shown that when a position sensor is driven close to a NEMS, pull-in occurs due to electrostatic forces, but also to near field forces acting at nanoscale, namely Casimir and Van der Waals forces. Pull-in conditions are investigated to find the minimum pull-in distance depending on the parameters of the system. This paper aims to demonstrate that the sensor can be driven below this minimum pull-in distance. To do so, a control strategy based on a nonlinear feedback design and on a robust pole placement/sensitivity function shaping is proposed. Furthermore, it is shown that the NEMS position can be controlled without contact while avoiding pull-in and decreasing its natural Brownian motion.","PeriodicalId":433215,"journal":{"name":"2008 47th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133206908","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is well-known that introducing a delay leads in general to a reduction of the performance or to instability due to the fact that time-delay systems are infinite dimensional. For instance, the set of initial conditions of a time-delay system is not a vector but a function taken in an interval. Therefore, investigating the effect of time-delays in the consensus problem is an important issue. In the present paper, we assume that each agent receives instantaneously its own state information but receives the state information from its neighbors after a constant delay. Two stability criteria are provided based on the frequency approach and on Lyapunov-Krasovskii techniques given in terms of LMI. An analytic expression of the consensus equilibrium which depends on the delay and on the initial conditions taken in an interval is derived. The efficiency of the method is tested for different network communication schemes.","PeriodicalId":433215,"journal":{"name":"2008 47th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123900307","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We study systems that evolve in discrete time within a continuous state-space. Quantized outputs are generated by the system according to a given partition of the state-space, while inputs are arbitrary sequences of symbols in a finite alphabet, which are associated to specific actions on the system. We restrict to the case of contractive dynamics for fixed inputs. The problem of left invertibility, i.e. recovering an unknown input sequence from the knowledge of the corresponding output string, is addressed using the theory of Iterated Function Systems (IFS), a tool developed for the study of fractals. We show how the IFS naturally associated to a system and the geometric properties of its attractor are linked to the left invertibility property of the system. Our main results are a necessary and sufficient condition for a given system to be left invertible with probability one on the space of inputs (i.e. for almost all input sequences), and necessary and sufficient conditions for left invertibility and uniform left invertibility under some weak additional hypotheses. A few examples are presented to illustrate the application of the proposed method.","PeriodicalId":433215,"journal":{"name":"2008 47th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control","volume":"288 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131656255","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For the single-stage version of the game, we characterize Nash equilibria and derive a consensus protocol that makes the players converge to the unique Pareto optimal Nash equilibrium. Such an equilibrium guarantees the interests of the players and is also social optimal in the set of Nash equilibria. For the multi-stage version of the game, we present an algorithm that converges to Nash equilibria, unfortunately not necessarily Pareto optimal. The algorithm returns a sequence of joint decisions, each one obtained from the previous one by an unilateral improvement on the part of a single player. The sequence with which the players act is chosen a priori and may influence the Nash equilibrium to which the path converges. We also specialize the game to a multi-retailer inventory system, where competing retailers aim at coordinating their supply strategies in order to minimize their local costs.","PeriodicalId":433215,"journal":{"name":"2008 47th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130897461","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
