We introduce the notion of curvature of the trajectory manifold and define it by means of a nonlinear quadratic optimal control problem. The quadratic cost can be viewed as a weighted L2 norm induced by a suitable inner product that provides a notion of orthogonality. The curvature at a given trajectory is defined in terms of the curves orthogonal to the tangent space at the given trajectory. We characterize the set of orthogonal curves. We show that it is a topological complement of the tangent space. We provide numerical techniques to compute orthogonal curves and to compute a lower bound of the curvature. We test these techniques on the inverted pendulum example.","PeriodicalId":433215,"journal":{"name":"2008 47th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control","volume":"118 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116371699","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is particularly relevant for chiral separations where online monitoring requires the combination of various analytical techniques that may operate on widely varying time scales. An MR periodic linear time-varying (PLTV) model is derived for the SMB process. The cyclic nature of the process is exploited by formulating the MR PLTV model within a repetitive model predictive control framework. Simulation results for a chiral separation are presented. The proposed multi-rate controller is able to deliver increased productivity while respecting the process and product specifications.","PeriodicalId":433215,"journal":{"name":"2008 47th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control","volume":"76 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121452068","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It presents a new controller that uses a conditional servocompensator. Previous work introduced the conditional servocompensator, which acts as a traditional servocompensator only in a neighborhood of the zero-error manifold, while acting as a stable system outside a boundary layer, leading to improvement in the transient response while achieving zero steady-state regulation error. Starting with a low-gain stabilizing state feedback controller, based on the solution of an algebraic Riccati equation, Lyapunov redesign is used to implement the state feedback control in a saturated high-gain feedback form that includes the conditional servocompensator. The design is extended to output feedback via a full-order high-gain observer.","PeriodicalId":433215,"journal":{"name":"2008 47th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121539759","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to guarantee accurate numerical solutions to the approximate Riccati equations, the Riccati equations must remain well-conditioned for the values of ¿ that are considered. This condition number reflects the combined sensitivity of the Riccati equations to the system inputs A, B, R, C and ¿. In addition, we also consider the sensitivity of the eigenvalues of I-¿2P¿ to ¿. We study the possibility of these sensitivities serving as an indication of the largest value of ¿ for which I-¿2P¿ remains positive definite. This sensitivity could also serve as an indication of the accuracy of the computation of I-¿2P¿. Lastly, in order to design efficient low order controllers, it is important to ensure the robustness of the design. Stability radius and stability margin serve as measures of the robustness of the controller. A one-dimensional nonlinear cable mass system is considered to illustrate these ideas and numerical results are presented.","PeriodicalId":433215,"journal":{"name":"2008 47th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121550489","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For sufficiently high prediction horizons, their properties can be shown to be conveniently related to those of output error methods, for which several important issues (e.g., uniqueness of estimation, robustness with respect to the noise model) have been characterized in the literature. The convergence properties of such criteria with respect to the prediction horizon are analyzed.","PeriodicalId":433215,"journal":{"name":"2008 47th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121561491","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Stochastic approximation type algorithms can ensure consensus in mean square and with probability one. For performance evaluation, we examine the long term behavior of the approximation error which consists of two naturally defined components. We show that the two components and their sum are each asymptotically normal after being normalized by the square root of time. This, in turn, characterizes the convergence rate of the algorithm. We also give the asymptotic formula for the scaled error covariances.","PeriodicalId":433215,"journal":{"name":"2008 47th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124416185","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

User utility is modeled as a concave function of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at the base station, and the problem is formulated as a Stackelberg game. Namely, the service provider imposes differentiated prices per unit of transmitting power and the users consequently update their power levels to maximize their net utilities. We devise a pricing policy and give conditions for its optimality when all the users are to be accommodated in the network. We show that there exist infinitely many Nash equilibrium points that reward the service provider with the same revenue. The pricing policy charges more from users that have better channel conditions and more willingness to pay for the provided service. We then study properties of the optimal revenue with respect to different parameters in the network. We show that for regimes with symmetric users who share the same level of willingness to pay, the optimal revenue is concave and increasing in the number of users in the network. We analytically obtain achievable SNRs for this special case, and finally present a numerical study in support of our results.","PeriodicalId":433215,"journal":{"name":"2008 47th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127669420","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The intrinsic frequency of a CPG in isolation is often different from that of observed movements, but appears to entrain to a natural mode of body oscillation through sensory feedback to achieve efficient locomotion. The objective of this paper is to reveal the feedback control mechanism underlying the entrainment of CPGs. Motivated by musculo-skeletal biomechanics, we consider the class of mechanical systems for which actuators, sensors, springs and dampers, are all collocated. Our main result provides a condition under which a CPG-based controller approximately achieves a selected mode of natural oscillation with a bound on the entrainment error.","PeriodicalId":433215,"journal":{"name":"2008 47th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control","volume":"121 15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126326734","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Global instability is related to the undesirable phenomenon of power system, implying that most of all generators in a system coherently lose synchronism with the remaining generators of the system. By analyzing a power system with the loop transmission network, we analytically show that global instability can occur as a result of the interplay between network topology of the system and local dynamics of generators in the system. This suggests a possibility of control for global instability by varying network topology of the system.","PeriodicalId":433215,"journal":{"name":"2008 47th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126543256","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A model-based approach is followed, according to a recent model of the glucose/insulin regulatory system which consists of a discrete-delay nonlinear differential equation model. A disturbance is added to the insulin kinetics in order to model uncertainties concerning both the insulin delivery rate and the mechanism actuating the insulin pump. A feedback control law which yields input-to-state stability of the closed loop error system with respect to such a disturbance is provided, which depends on the glucose and insulin measurements at the present and at a delayed time. In silico simulations validate the theoretical results.","PeriodicalId":433215,"journal":{"name":"2008 47th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125720950","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
