A general mechanical technology, based on magnetically levitated microrobots, that may be better matched to semiconductor manufacturing needs is described. Magnetic levitation has favorable downward scaling laws and can be used to build multiple-degree-of-freedom drives capable of high speeds (15 to 25 moves/s) and high precision (1 mu m or better) using small manipulators (0.5 cm). A major advantage of the magnetic designs that were studied theoretically and experimentally is that they allow the use of small-motion, multiple-degree-of-freedom precision devices for long-distance, one-degree-of-freedom transport. Preliminary experimental results indicate that these systems can be batch-fabricated using printed-circuit-board or other planar technologies. Other advantages of magnetic levitation technology include loose fabrication tolerances, robustness in adverse environments, and reduced particulate generation relative to conventional robots.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":432803,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. Lau","doi":"10.1109/EMTS.1989.68996","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/EMTS.1989.68996","url":null,"abstract":"Three very small microwave packages have been designed and fabricated. The hermeticity performance and reliability of these packages were evaluated. Package A has brazed leads and hence superior lead strength (lead tension and lead fatigue), but poor and inconsistent hermeticity yields. The leads of package B are sandwiched between the base and lid using the solder glass, so that the lead strength is not as good as that of the brazed leads. Furthermore, the sealed package is more susceptible to handling-related problems. The bending process caused microcracks along the sealing glass, which deteriorate the hermeticity of the package. The package C design incorporated the package A design and the side braze package design. The reliability of this package meets the JAN-S requirements as well as other military standard specifications. The performance of the package is also acceptable for high-frequency microwave applications. The results indicate that packages designed with closely matched coefficient of linear thermal expansion materials provide reliable hermetic packages.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":432803,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. The Purdue ERC has established a clear research agenda, a strong education program, close industry collaboration, and the organizational structure and policies to manage this ambitious effort. Over 200 students and faculty from 13 departments are directly involved in the ERC research activities, and over 1000 publications have already resulted. The Purdue ERC targets all of the technical activities involved in discrete product manufacturing from early design to final assembly and finishing. The integration of knowledge from different engineering disciplines is a common theme throughout research and education programs. The author outlines some of the most important aspects of the Purdue ERC consortium, including the research and educational objectives, the mechanisms employed for industrial collaboration and technology transfer, and the policies instituted to support the goals.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":432803,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. A number of plastic encapsulated devices in the as-received condition were screened and documented using SLAM (scanning laser acoustic microscopy). Those parts containing flaws were then examined using a C-SAM (C-mode scanning acoustic microscope) to characterize the type of flaw and depth of the defect. Several of the defect-free parts were also evaluated on the C-SAM to characterize the appearance of typical devices. After the initial investigation, all the devices were thermally shocked. The devices were again screened and documented on SLAM to note any changes from their previous condition. The defective parts were again evaluated and documented on C-SAM to further characterize the defects. Several interesting results were observed from this investigation. In general, a difference in the acoustic properties of the encapsulants was noticed from manufacturer to manufacturer. This may be related to the appearance of defects in certain devices.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":432803,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. Features of the system are fine positioning and endpoint sensing after an IBM 7576 robot coarsely aligns the SMD to its target. Fine positioning is done using a customer-designed micropositioning device. The endpoint sensor is a single camera vision system that by image analysis determines the alignment error of the SMD to the board. System performance was evaluated by placing SMDs of 100 leads with 25 mil lead spacing on a board. The alignment error is less than 0.5 mil and 0.015 degrees , independent of feeder and board position error or robot repeatability. The average cycle time is less than 10 s.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":432803,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. Each bond interface was documented acoustically and then pull-tested to develop a database upon which to formulate a specific test method. Data demonstrate excellent correlation between the degree of bonding and correlative pull tests (destructive) when artifacts of the pull test were compensated. A series of probability curves was generated to predict pull strength from SLAM data alone. In particular, the scanning laser acoustic microscope (SLAM) produces real-time images (30 fields of view per second) at ultrasonic frequencies from 10 to 200 MHz. The speed of scan and the practicality of acoustic microscopy make the method potentially viable for nondestructive evaluation of microelectronic packaging. A standard is proposed for inclusion in MIL-STD 883.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":432803,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. The process consisted of rapid thermal alloying of a sputtered gold film deposited over a fine-ground backside of silicon wafer. The alloying was done at 400 degrees C in an inert environment for a duration of 30 s. The effectiveness of this treatment was demonstrated by improved wetting of an aged, alloyed film with melted gold preform used in gold-silicon eutectic die bonding compared with a nonalloyed specimen. Rapid thermal alloying at 400 degrees C in an inert atmosphere was found to be the most effective means of stabilizing the gold-coated wafer backside. Convection alloying was found to induce some surface oxidation. Surface finish had a notable effect on the resistance to oxidation of the alloyed film; smoother finish was found to be better. Evaporated gold film was found to have a thin underlying SiO/sub 2/ layer. Such a structure would be a potential hazard to the reliability of die bonding. In such a case, sputtering would be the preferred method of gold deposition.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":432803,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings.
