There is evidence that many Christians are being more influenced by their social affinity groups than by their sense of identity in Christ, contributing to social tensions. This essay addresses the challenge of making disciples who are not conformed to the world but rather transformed (Rom 12:2). An approach is proposed that first defines the nature of discipleship and the importance of fostering a biblical “in Christ” identity among followers of Jesus. Social identity theory is employed both in biblical interpretation and in understanding Christian identity that transcends other identities. Adult learning theories are then used to propose an approach of “disequilibration and reframing” to foster identity formation. Three types of transformative encounters as pedagogical methods are described.","PeriodicalId":43205,"journal":{"name":"Missiology-An International Review","volume":"3999 2 1","pages":"361 - 377"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2023-08-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86689132","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Kaiser, Jr’s influential proposal for evangelical Old Testament missiology. Out of concern to avoid an understanding of “Israel as God’s favored or pet nation,” Kaiser argues that God’s promise to Abraham in Gen 12:3 is for the sake of all nations, and as such, “the first Great Commission mandate of the Bible.” In its three exegetical sections, the article seeks to overturn Kaiser’s Gentile-centric interpretation of the apostle Paul; his reading of the Primeval History in Genesis as a story of universal curse; and his understanding of the blessing of Abraham as remedial. More basically, it asserts the priority of Israel within God’s ways and works.","PeriodicalId":43205,"journal":{"name":"Missiology-An International Review","volume":"20 1","pages":"347 - 360"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2023-08-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90230675","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Bantu’s opening words for this excellent and useful volume illustrate the issue at hand: “Christianity is and has always been a global religion. For this reason, it is important never to think of Christianity as becoming global” (1). While it is true that the expansion of the Christian community can be traced in recent years to mission from the churches in the West, as the author illustrates well in the chapters that follow, even as Christianity was spreading in a western direction in late antiquity, it was also spreading to the South and the East. While some of this has been described by others such as Lamin Sanneh (e.g., Disciples of All Nations: Pillars of World Christianity, 2008), even Sanneh comes in for some critique for a historiography, which Bantu describes as placing “Greek and Latin sources at the center of Christian mission with Asia and Africa as recipients of evangelization” (2, n. 5). Bantu illustrates his point with scholarship that engages both primary sources and the best Patristic scholarship of early Christianity, both citing and critiquing sources such as Walter Bauer’s fascinating, though ultimately problematic argument (24). His clear explanation of the linguistic difficulties that were part of the rejection of the Chalcedonian position on Christology for both the Miaphysite position (especially in Ethiopia) and the Diaphysite position (in the Syriac-speaking East) will help illustrate the often-unacknowledged complexity of the respective positions, and the tragedy of the schisms that came in the wake of these misunderstandings. Bantu’s overview of the neglected history of the church in Nubia (84–95) is long overdue and fascinating, including both their successful military defense against the otherwise unstoppable Arab-Muslim invasion, and the possibility that the Nubian Christians had sought to bring the Gospel further south into Africa. The sections on Christian history in the Middle East and Asia are likewise excellent, and one can especially appreciate Bantu’s conclusion, where he wisely circles back to Lamin Sanneh’s principle of translation and Andrew Walls’ twin indigenizing 1190160 MIS0010.1177/00918296231190160Missiology: An International ReviewBook reviews book-review2023","PeriodicalId":43205,"journal":{"name":"Missiology-An International Review","volume":"37 1","pages":"383 - 384"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2023-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76699822","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article explores a podcast series produced by Tanzanian Luphurise Mawere from her home at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. First, it outlines the theology of the podcast and highlights the creation mandate as the dominant feature of it. Second, it locates Mawere’s theology in the mosaic of prosperity theologies in Africa, arguing that her theology ought to be viewed as a legitimate part of prosperity theology in Africa, despite significant differences with other prosperity theologies. Finally, it considers the contribution of Mawere’s theology to African prosperity theology and the study of it, and suggests how it might be applied by mission practitioners.","PeriodicalId":43205,"journal":{"name":"Missiology-An International Review","volume":"43 1","pages":"335 - 346"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2023-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91369928","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
