The present study aims to explore the trends of monograph acquisition in public libraries. The population consists of the four major public libraries of Lahore. A case study approach has been used to achieve the objectives of the study. Research is based on primarily the personal visits of the researcher to the acquisition departments of these libraries in order to collect data. Structured interviews were carried out with acquisition librarians to investigate the process of purchasing. The analysis of data reveals that a high ratio of Urdu language books has been purchased during the last decade, literature and religion being the major purchase area, whereas, art and architecture, pure sciences, and languages are the most neglected. The primary problem is that the purpose of the gifts program is to add reasonable and relevant materials to the collection, and too little of what is received fits that description. Resulting questions include whether the library needs to continue to receive gifts, and if so, whether there are ways to identify which books might be worth adding to the collection. To answer these questions, the authors reviewed circulation records of gift books acquired over a seven-year period and compared those lists with required reading lists for classes, interlibrary loan reports, and lists of financial donors. Results indicate that gift books do circulate, and that required readings lists can be helpful in gift book selection. The study demonstrates that peer-reviewed journals are by a large margin the information resource used the most in preparing Doctor of Nursing Practice dissertations, and it develops a list of serials titles with the most heavily weighted impact. The issue of resource currency is analyzed, and the study finds a heavy reliance on recent information sources. They need to communicate their needs about the information required from the fund code structure in their Integrated Library System to perform their job duties and demonstrate sound fiscal management. When fund codes lose the granularity that provides information on the costs of different formats by subject discipline or academic department there is a subsequent loss in fiscal accountability and the ability to accurately project anticipated inflationary costs for formats in different disciplines. When the Acquisitions Unit at the Adelphi University Libraries streamlined the fund code structure the loss of granularity had a major impact on budget management and fiscal accountability for Collection Development. The University Library now actively encourages the use of media content in a variety of forms and media collections continue to grow in popularity. Wiley","doi":"10.1080/14649055.2015.1080509","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1080/14649055.2015.1080509","url":null,"abstract":"This article reports on a bibliographic and citation analysis of 79 journal publications from 41 journals produced in a one-year period by atmospheric science researchers in the Atlantic Oceanographic Meteorological Laboratory, an affiliate of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The study used citation analysis to determine the cited publication format, age dispersion, frequency of cited journal titles, and availability of the information resources that researchers publish in and cite, and to determine how well the library supports the needs of these scientists and researchers. This type of analysis can inform collection development decisions and can be used to assess the strength of the library collection. The study found that journal articles represented 77% of all cited references and that 74% of the cited journal titles were available through the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Regional Library. The study also found that the sample set of 2,516 cited journal articles from 464 journals upheld the 80/20 rule in that 85% of the citations come from the top 20% of the journal titles. The survey instrument included a questionnaire about the reasons that might affect the decision to outsource, the steps involved in the outsourcing process, the obstacles encountered by digitization projects during outsourcing, the materials being outsourced, and the criteria for choosing vendors. Digitization projects were also asked about contracting and quality control. The results indicate that outsourcing is a trend in Saudi digitization projects, as five out of nine major digitization projects that responded have outsourced.
