We described the development process of SODCEM, including users’ needs analysis, program application, program implementation, metadata definition, development platform selection, users’ service and outcome. The practice achieved its primary goal, providing long-term preserved resources for targeted users from emergence management, such as researchers, government officials and even the public. It helped the librarians who attended this project to make great progress on digital resources collection and processing. The practice significantly increased the library reputation on special digital repository, curation and services among the academic community in the university, which enriched the role of the library in the information era and appealed to the targeted user groups. The implementation and relevant experience have implications for academic libraries and other institutions to conduct similar programs.","PeriodicalId":43196,"journal":{"name":"LIBRARY COLLECTIONS ACQUISITIONS & TECHNICAL SERVICES","volume":"27 1","pages":"87 - 95"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73826514","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Twenty five social science journals in Nigeria which were subscribed by University of Nigeria Library from 2005 to 2014 were used for the study, but four of the journals that have no relevant information required for the study were excluded leaving only 21 journals used for analysis. Web citations of the journals were obtained to determine their visibility and impacts. Findings show that the editorial boards of majority of the journals were composed of professors and doctorate degree holders. It was also found that more than 60% of the journals are published biannually; however, a few journals are indexed internationally. The common citation pattern of the journals is APA style, while 9.5% of the journals have web presence. All the journals examined publish in English language while only one of them publishes in other language. Findings also reveal that commercial publishers are dominant in the establishment of the journals; only 19.04% of them are published by professional bodies. This study is useful guide for researchers, librarians, academic institutions and professional associations in establishment and selection of journal for scholarly communication in the Social Sciences.","PeriodicalId":43196,"journal":{"name":"LIBRARY COLLECTIONS ACQUISITIONS & TECHNICAL SERVICES","volume":"143 1","pages":"71 - 86"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87967364","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study utilizes k-means clustering analysis to identify categories of academic libraries based on three variables: number of library resources per enrolled students, library circulation per enrolled student, and library expenditures per enrolled student. Four distinct clusters are identified: high circulation per student, high expenditures per student, large collections per student, and standard circulation, expenditures, and collections. Attributes of these clusters of libraries (institution type, university endowment, year established) are explored. These findings indicate new means of classifying libraries based on funding and use statistics as opposed to characteristics of the institution of higher education which the library serves.","PeriodicalId":43196,"journal":{"name":"LIBRARY COLLECTIONS ACQUISITIONS & TECHNICAL SERVICES","volume":"6 1","pages":"96 - 105"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74262001","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Smathers Libraries, and OCLC to open the Cuban national library's collections to researchers around the world. WorldCat now lists over 134,000 catalog records with BNJM's holdings attached. Many of these records required the creation of original MARC records based on images from scanned catalog cards. An overview of the project is followed by a discussion of the cataloging-related processes involved, and a brief analysis of the ongoing work. This effort has opened previously unknown collections to researchers outside of Cuba, and will have a major impact on Cuba-related research well into the future.","PeriodicalId":43196,"journal":{"name":"LIBRARY COLLECTIONS ACQUISITIONS & TECHNICAL SERVICES","volume":"5 1","pages":"114 - 122"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90925386","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The objectives of the study were to find out the online public access catalogs provided; the resources available for effective provision of online public access catalogs; the extent to which the provision of online public access catalogs have contributed to the effective use of library resources; the problems associated with the provision of online public access catalogs; and strategies for improving the provision of online public access catalogs in the libraries. A descriptive survey design was used for the study. Purposive sampling was used to select three federal universities, including University of Lagos, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ife, and the University of Ibadan. A structured questionnaire and observation checklist were developed based on the research questions and used to obtain data for the study. All data collected through the questionnaire were analyzed using simple statistics (mean). The study findings show that federal university libraries under study have online public access catalogs functioning to a great extent and that through direct access to library bibliographic databases, timely access to library materials, and resource sharing, among others, online public access catalogs have greatly contributed to the effective use of the library resources. However, database conversion, unstable power supply, consistent systems breakdown, and inadequate computers, are among the problems associated with provision of online public access catalogs to support the use of library resources in the university libraries. Based on the findings, it was recommended that the libraries should seek funding from external bodies; catalogers should be exposed to skill acquisition platforms to acquire the competencies required for provision of online public access catalogs, and advances in use of the tools for online public access catalogs should be included in the curricula of library schools in Nigeria.","PeriodicalId":43196,"journal":{"name":"LIBRARY COLLECTIONS ACQUISITIONS & TECHNICAL SERVICES","volume":"6 1","pages":"38 - 45"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78797947","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study discussed perception and usage of digital databases, level of satisfaction, impact on users, factors affecting accessing digital databases, and problems in usage of digital databases. Design/methodology/approach: The survey research method was used to collect data for this study. A multi-method approach was used. The data was analyzed via SPSS (13.0). Findings: The findings reveal that most of the respondents (total mean value = 4.33, 4.26, 3.86) used DL resources for research purposes in order to fulfil their thesis/dissertation and course work requirement. A total mean value of 4.156 indicates that the respondents were extremely satisfied with the authenticity of information in available databases. Inclusion and exclusion criteria: This study included only the top five universities of Nanjing, China, according to a Chinese university rank list and the rest of the universities in China excluded from this study. The focus was on onsite users; remote users and non-users were excluded from this study. Research limitations: The study included only five universities of Nanjing, China. Therefore, a smaller size of post-graduate students was considered and a random proportionate stratified sample technique was used to make the representative sample. Practical implications: The present study will be helpful for library professionals, subject specialists, and policy makers in designing, developing, and managing university DL resources. Originality/value: This study will present valuable suggestions and contribute to the evaluation of DL resources in academic libraries from a fresh perspective.","PeriodicalId":43196,"journal":{"name":"LIBRARY COLLECTIONS ACQUISITIONS & TECHNICAL SERVICES","volume":"10 1","pages":"58 - 69"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84358648","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For library management, digital resources facilitate long-term preservation together with savings of space and human costs. This lead to a trend of rapid development of digitization and electronic resources, leading to lots of changes in academic libraries. However, there are few studies providing a holistic view of this important trend, especially in metropolis of the East. To explore this trend, we interviewed four librarians in different departments from different universities in Hong Kong for a qualitative analysis on various aspects such as digital versus print, user expectation changes, and new management problems. Emerging issues of e-resources highlighted by the libraries includes acquisitions policies, budget implication, copyright, and access restrictions, consortium collaboration, manpower issues, workflow, and library system changes. We further discuss the practical implications of our findings, which are supportive to those disparate in other literature.","PeriodicalId":43196,"journal":{"name":"LIBRARY COLLECTIONS ACQUISITIONS & TECHNICAL SERVICES","volume":"1 1","pages":"28 - 37"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83104768","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This local content consists of the university's publications and other rare materials. As a result of the quality and content of these materials, it is necessary that such resources should be properly preserved for posterity to enhance their access and use. The current article studies the acquisition and management of the contents of five Nigerian universities' institutional repositories available on OpenDOAR. Data was collected using interviews and observation checklist. Study results reveal that University of Nigeria Nsukka has the highest volume of 21,461 contents, while University of Nigeria Nsukka and Federal University of Technology Akure archived the greatest variety types of content. Covenant and University of Nigeria Nsukka archived more journal articles. The five universities studied acquire their content mainly from their postgraduate schools. These universities have an open-access policy, use DSpace, and apply Dublin Core metadata. The study recommended that creating awareness among universities on the role of institutional repository in enhancing global visibility is important. Therefore, to achieve this, more workshops should be organized.","PeriodicalId":43196,"journal":{"name":"LIBRARY COLLECTIONS ACQUISITIONS & TECHNICAL SERVICES","volume":"9 1","pages":"46 - 57"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87712528","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By the time of the study, there were 20,251 titles in both International Development Agency and Law textbook sections of the main library, of which 23% were the newly acquired titles. The books were selected by lecturers from all academic departments. Prior to the selection, lecturers were trained in modern book selection methods to ensure that they made appropriate selections and updated the reading lists. Once received, the bibliographic records of new books were entered in the Virtua Integrated Library System. After 1 year, Makerere University Library conducted a study to find out whether the new books were being used, how relevant the books were to users' needs, whether the reading lists were current, whether user education, library catalogues, etc., had any influence on the usage of new books. The first set of data was electronically collected for 2 weeks during the peak period (11th and 12th weeks of the semester) using the Virtua Integrated Library System circulation module. While the second set of data was collected in the 5th and 7th weeks of the semester both electronically and manually to address the gaps realized in the first set of data that was collected only electronically. A short, self-administered questionnaire was used to manually collect data; it had 10 questions, two of which were open-ended. The quantifiable data was analyzed using Google spreadsheets, while the qualitative data was categorized into themes. The findings indicated that the books were overwhelmingly relevant (95%); while 93% of the respondents identified the new books from the reading lists, confirming that the lists had been updated and hence the book selection training was timely. Course mates contributed 30%, online catalogue 14%, while library user education (20%) and other information literacy training sessions contributed to raising awareness about the new books and the sections where they are located. The article concludes by highlighting the implications of the study findings for policy and practice, lessons learned, as well as identifying areas in library services at Makerere University Library that require further research.","PeriodicalId":43196,"journal":{"name":"LIBRARY COLLECTIONS ACQUISITIONS & TECHNICAL SERVICES","volume":"3 1","pages":"10 - 27"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85178590","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
