After determining the suitable solvent for the dissolution of boron minerals, the samples were dissolved and the elements were determined in the sample solutions. In order to validate the method, the accuracy and precision of the method was checked by analyzing standard reference materials (NIST Montana soil 2711 and NIST Estuarine sediment 1646a). In addition, linear working range, limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) values for each element studied were determined for the method. For zinc borate crystallization, sodium tetraborate decahydrate and zinc sulfate heptahydrate were used as reactants. In the first part of the study, the crystals were characterized by X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), light microscopy, and particle size and thermogravimetric analysis. The results show that the obtained crystals were in the form of Zn2B6O11•7H2O, and the operating conditions had a significant effect on the size, morphology, and filtration characteristics of the zinc borate crystals. In the second part of the study, Box–Behnken design (BBD) with response surface methodology (RSM) was employed to determine the optimal operating conditions for zinc borate crystallization. The effects of stirring rate, temperature, and reactant feed rate on the average particle size were investigated. The results show that the data sufficiently fit the second-order polynomial model. The crystallization conditions, including stirring rate, temperature, and reactant feed rate, were studied at 400–500 rpm, 45–85oC, and 300–900 mL/h, respectively. The minimum particle size (3.3 µm) was obtained at a stirring rate of 450 rpm, a temperature of 85oC, and a reactant feed rate of 300 mL/h.","PeriodicalId":431027,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Boron","volume":"08 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121602406","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Two process parameters, the amounts of modifier agent and the processing periods, were selected to investigate their effects on solubility, wettability, dispersibility, and hydration properties of ANB powders. Each of the process parameters, i.e., SA amounts (0.5, 1, and 2 wt.%), and coating periods (30, 60, and 120 min), was set at three different levels. Structural changes in the dry-coated powders were characterised using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Differential thermal and thermogravimetric analysis (DTA-TG). A discrete coating at an efficiency of 68% was acquired with SA amount of 1 wt.% at a coating period of 60 min, and, thus, resulted in a 31.4% decrease (from 40% to 8.6%) in water solubility of ANB. Moreover, this discrete SA coating made ANB more hydrophobic (99o) and prevented its further hydration. Furthermore, FT-IR and XPS results indicated that SA is coated over the surface of ANB via physical adsorption rather than chemical bonding. Thus, the effective dry coating could be applied to obtain surface-coated ANB, which offers controlled solubility in water-based suspensions.","PeriodicalId":431027,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Boron","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130214730","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, linear and mass attenuation coefficients using 80 keV, 356 keV, 137Cs (662 keV), 60Co (1173 keV,1332 keV) and 2000 keV(high energy) gamma energies for B 4 C (5-15 wt%) particle-reinforced Alumix 13 and Alumix 231 (which contains special alloy elements such as Cu and Mg) aluminum matrix composites were theoretically calculated with XCOM platform. Pair production, coherent scattering, photoelectric absorption and incoherent scattering processes besides the total attenuation coefficients for B4C (5-15 wt%) particle-reinforced Alumix 13 and Alumix 231 matrix composite materials were evaluated separately. On the other hand, half-value thickness (HVL) values and one-tenth thickness values (TVL) were also calculated to evaluate the radiation shielding effectiveness of this material excluding coherent scattering values that are frequently used in gamma ray transport theory as well as the total attenuation coefficients. Gamma attenuation curves for Al composite materials against 80 keV, 356 keV, 137Cs (662 keV), 60Co (1173 keV, 1332 keV) and 2000 keV (high energy) gamma energies were theoretically calculated and plotted for B 4 C (5-15 wt%) particle-reinforced Alumix 13 and Alumix 231 matrix composite materials. According to the obtained results for this material, radiation attenuation properties and the ability of shielding of materials were investigated. Therefore, this study is original from a variety of aspects, and its results may be used not only in nuclear technology but also in other technologies such as nano and space technology.","PeriodicalId":431027,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Boron","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-08-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130514753","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, in the study, using the powder metallurgy method, microstructure and hardness properties of aluminum (AA7075) composite and hybrid materials were examined in the combination of different ceramic reinforcement phases (5-10-15% B 4 C and SiC). Pressed (700MPa) matrix/reinforcement powder mixtures were sintered for 1 hour at a temperature of 560 °C. After the sintering process, density measurements of the test samples were carried out. In order to determine the microstructure and hardness properties of the test samples, optical microscope, scanning electron microscope (SEM), and micro-hardness (HV0.1) measurements were made respectively. At the same time, micro-hardness values were examined by applying the solution-quenching to the test samples at 475 °C temperature for 2 hours and the aging heat treatment at 120 °C temperature for 24 hours. Compared to single ceramic phase composite materials, a decrease in density and hardness value occurred in 5% B 4 C-SiC reinforced aluminum hybrid composite materials. Furthermore, it was determined that the micro-hardness values of test samples increased after the aging heat treatment.","PeriodicalId":431027,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Boron","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117202975","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Varying amounts of boron between 0.48 - 4.75 wt.% was added into steel melt. The boron analysis of the alloys was conducted by wet chemical analysis. The microstructure of the specimens was characterized with optical microscope, Scanning Electron Microscope with Energy Dispersive X-Ray Analysis (SEM/EDX) and X-Ray Diffraction (X-RD). The experimental results showed that high boron steel was successfully produced by sand casting with high casting yield. The microstructure of boron alloyed high chromium cast steel consists of three dimensional networks of M 2 B borides surrounding the martensitic matrix in as cast condition. Under the certain carbon and chromium content, boron carbide volume fraction is directly depended on the boron additions. Due to the high amount of chromium and boron, carbides and borides were embedded in each other in all additions. In the specimens having less than 2.44 B wt.%, carbide/boride structure was fishbone type with dendritic distribution over the matrix whereas rod/needle like structure with randomly distribute was observed in specimens having 2.44 - 4.75 B wt.%. In all specimens containing boron, M 2 B and M 7  (C, B) 5  type carbides/boride peaks were detected by X-RD analysis.","PeriodicalId":431027,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Boron","volume":"386 1-3","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131580270","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It has become a desirable material because of its superior properties and it has gained importance how to synthesize it cheaper and easier. In this study,  trimethoxy boroxine was synthesized from the reactions of boric acid and trimethyl borate. In the first step, boric acid reacted with methanol in order to obtain trimethyl borate as a precursor. The best reaction yield was obtain by using 1:2 ratio of boric acid and trimethyl borate in cyclohexane. Trimethoxy boroxine was synthesized from boric acid and trimethyl borate in azeotropic distillation set-up containing Dean-Stark apparatus.
