Religious pluralism in the West, its causes of origin, differences in opinion amongst Western scholars, and its influence on the Muslim world are presented. The paper finds that in Muslim countries such as Malaysia, there are people who propagate religious pluralism and there are people who oppose it completely. Between those who propagate and those who oppose, there arealso those who partially understand or completely do not understand at all the philosophy of religious pluralism. Pertama, cabaran sekularisasi dan pandangan alam sekular, khususnya penghilangan pesona daripada alam tabīʿi (disenchantment of nature), yang menyediakan ranah yang subur bagi kemunculan golongan manusia yang bersifat materialistik, tidak bertanggungjawab dan mementingkan diri sendiri (selfish). Kedua, cabaran penyempitan agama sebagai natijah daripada kemunduran dan kedangkalan kefahaman terhadap agama, sehingga Islam dilihat jumud dan tidak mampu memberikan jalan penyelesaian terhadap cabaran ketamadunan dan dunia masa kini. {"title":"PRIMORDIAL COVENANT AS THE BASIS OF RELIGION:THE QUR’ĀNIC MῑTHĀQ OF ALASTU ACCORDING TO SYED MUHAMMAD NAQUIB AL-ATTAS","authors":"Mohd Farid Mohd Shahran","doi":"10.56389/tafhim.vol15no1.1","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.56389/tafhim.vol15no1.1","url":null,"abstract":"In the philosophy of religion, apart from a cogent conception of God, a strong spiritual relation that binds human beings with God is another important element that supplies the raison d’etre to a particular religious tradition. This article evaluates one of the manifestations of this spiritual bondage in Islam through an examination of the primordial spiritual covenant between God and all human beings known as “the Covenant of Alastu.” It analyses how this idea of covenant, originally taken from the Qur’ānic verse and particularly refined in the Sufi tradition, was further developed and became continuous reference to the archetypal origin of man in Islam. Based mainly on the works of Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas, this article proves that the Primordial Covenant has left great impacts on some other aspects of religiosity such as the spiritual bondage between individuals that transcends gender, family, and ethnicity. Not only are Muslim refugees fleeing from armed conflict or systemic human rights violations at risk, but also Muslim minority communities. Many of them are excluded from mainstream society despite having legal citizenship. This article argues for a new, reconceptualized ummah that will provide effective protection for the rights of Muslims globally. It puts forward two proposals to that aim, including an international structure for advocating for the rights of Muslims internationally, as well as a radical rethinking of how countries view citizenship and migration. In other words, this group of students possess a relatively better cognitive abilities for logical reasoning and cognitive maturity to excel in the future as professionals in Science-Mathematics related fields. However, there are still concerns regarding how Muslim Science students manage their thinking when confronted with a situation that demands scientific and religious consideration. Adolescent students’ thinking can be used as a baseline for understanding the worldview of young Muslims. As such, a study is necessary to comprehend how such thinking is managed. By means of the method of tafsīr-taʾwīl and muḥkamāt-mutashābihāt appropriated by al-Attas as a way of understanding the cosmos, it is argued that man proceeds to understand the different degrees of existence through his understanding of metaphors and man as a metaphorical concept. Man, then, is able to recognise a higher degree of existence that is the cause of his own existence, which is God’s existence. Thus, the management and conservation of the environment based on the Islamic approach is gaining attention both nationally and internationally. Apart from highlighting the Islamic approach, the empowerment of religious institutions such as mosques has also received attention from various parties. As an example, creating an eco-mosque and expanding its role as an environmental conservation agent in an effort to spread and promote the message of environmental awareness to the community. Although the implementation of eco-mosques in Malaysia is still not widespread, efforts to transform the existing mosques into eco-mosques are already in place. Therefore, this article presents an overview of the concept of eco-mosque and outlines in general the potential and challenges of eco-mosque implementation in Malaysia. Hence, food safety and halal principles are interconnected and inseparable. In determining safety, the hygiene and quality of food—the concept of halālan ṭayyiban (halal and good) becomes the main benchmark. This article attempts to examine the importance of food safety parallel to the concept of halālan ṭayyiban in positioning food safety in the halal food industry; to review the reference standards used in halal certification that are consistent with the concept of halālan ṭayyiban in Malaysia, and to identify the aspects of food safety in the reference standards used for halal food in Malaysia. More precisely, it studies Moosa’s interpretation of Islam. In exploring his thoughts, this article shall focus on some aspects of Moosa’s thoughts, notably: metaphysics, anthropology and exegesis, and conclude that Moosa’s ethos of interpretation and representation of Islam is, with some concern, postmodern. Also, it will conclude with some remarks on the de-essentialising implications of such a postmodern approach on the understanding of Islam’s essence. They have multiple levels of severity such as cognitive functioning deficits, emotional hypersensitivity and behavioural problems. From the Islamic perspective, these children should be treated with dignity as they have their own rights and needs. Islam discourages any attempt to neglect and marginalise them based on their weaknesses and disabilities.
