We consider the problem of scheduling jobs of different families on non-identical parallel machines. A special time constraint, associated to each job family, must be satisfied for a machine to remain qualified to process the job family. In addition, we introduce the notion of the risk, modeled as the expected yield resulting from assigning a job to a machine. The objective is to schedule jobs to minimize the combination of three criteria: The sum of completion times, the number of machine disqualification and the sum of expected yield. We propose an integer linear programming model and heuristics to solve this problem. Numerical experiments are reported.","PeriodicalId":430428,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Conference on Automation Science and Engineering (CASE)","volume":"137 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124301947","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Maternity facilities, consisting of obstetrics units, basic and intensive care neonatal units, are heavily stochastic systems where capacity requirements cannot be set deterministically. Therefore, in this paper queuing theory is utilized to obtain a performance measure (the refused admission probability) which sets an analytical relationship between capacity and the required service level for each service unit in each maternity facility. This performance measure is embedded into a multi-period mixed-integer optimization model for determining the necessary capacity decisions in each time-period for each maternity facility in the network. The model takes into account demand demographics while minimizing the total cost of capacity decisions and refused admissions. The model is then applied to a real-world perinatal network in Hauts-de-Seine in Paris, France.","PeriodicalId":430428,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Conference on Automation Science and Engineering (CASE)","volume":"92 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124421421","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Both of patients and urologists will be benefited from automated monitor processes. This paper presents the preliminary design of a segmented bending mechanism to steer an embedded imaging probe for automated visual inspection of the inside surface of the bladder. The suggested bending mechanism consists of three bending segments connected in series and forms the shape of a continuum robot with redundant degree of freedom. Every segment is controlled by two pairs of distributed thin wires. Its bending angle and bending direction can be controlled independently. To obtain perpendicular view on the bladder surface and maintain the required safety distance, the positions and orientations of the tip of the imaging probe are controlled by synchronized bending motions of all segments. Forward kinematics model of the proposed hyper-redundant mechanism is developed. Inverse kinematics based on exhaustive searching algorithm in the configuration space is used to find suitable bending configurations for specific view centers. Kinematics simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed bending mechanism and control method for scanning the entire bladder inner surface.","PeriodicalId":430428,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Conference on Automation Science and Engineering (CASE)","volume":"97 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124730536","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The method estimates the blurriness of the object by analyzing the intensity variation of a defined region around the object border in the frequency domain. A defocus function is proposed so that the best focused position of the object is found when the defocus function reaches its minimum within the close region around the focal plane. Experiments for execution time and accuracy evaluation have been performed to compare its performance to other autofocus algorithms. Experimental results showed that the proposed algorithm outperformed other algorithms in terms of execution time and accuracy and that it is more robust to environmental change.","PeriodicalId":430428,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Conference on Automation Science and Engineering (CASE)","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125040312","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To improve patient safety and reduce hospital mortality, rapid response teams have been developed and implemented to provide a quick evaluation and treatment to patients with clinical signs of deterioration. In this paper, we present a preliminary study on modeling and analysis of the rapid response process in acute care delivery. Specifically, such a process is modeled as a complex network with split, merge and parallel structures. An analytical model is developed to evaluate the mean and variability of the decision time in the system, as well as the probability that such a decision is made within a desired time interval. The work is primarily motivated by the need to find ways to automatically maintain the longwall shearer's position within the coal seam so that the mining resource can be optimally extracted. This process is important for improving the safety, productivity and sustainability of longwall mining. The current approach for resource tracking relies almost exclusively on manual inspection and so has significant practical drawbacks. As a solution to this problem, this paper describes a new sensing method designed to automatically track geological coal seam features, known as marker bands, using thermal infrared imaging. The feature detection and tracking tasks are described with real measurements to demonstrate the efficacy of the approach. The outcome is important as it represents a practical way to achieve automated horizon control and so help overcome a long standing issue in underground coal mining.","PeriodicalId":430428,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Conference on Automation Science and Engineering (CASE)","volume":"96 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128329387","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Given a set of product types each modeled as a sequence of operations, the operations can be adapted to control concurrent manufacturing of multiple product instances, without resource deadlocks and with maximal flexibility. The given sequences of operations may contain routing flexibility, conjunctive and/or disjunctive resource requirements, and product assembly. Using a known deadlock avoidance approach, this paper presents how to transform the given operations into models required for the deadlock avoidance approach and how the calculated policy may be retransformed back into the operations.","PeriodicalId":430428,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Conference on Automation Science and Engineering (CASE)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128415326","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nevertheless, few scientific works have so far investigated interactions between VM and Run-to-Run (R2R), the most common control approach in the field. In this paper, a novel strategy aimed at integrating VM and R2R relying on Information Theory measure is presented and motivated. The proposed control method penalizes statistical measurements based on their informative distance from real metrology data. This approach is also able to cope with the virtual loop control, in which the R2R runs for several process iterations without actual measurements, relying only on VM predictions. The results are compared with the current state-of-the-art by means of simulation studies based on realistic assumptions.","PeriodicalId":430428,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Conference on Automation Science and Engineering (CASE)","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128174860","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For these purposes, there are two methods recommended, one is being fixed into the building structures with rails being pre-installed inside, the other is being fixed into the reinforced curtain walls. Therefore, from this study, which is testing the sustaining capability of the fixing parts where the load of curtain wall and the robot itself are weighing, we wish to develop the fixing structures of good qualities while satisfying constructability, safety, economic feasibility and etc. The review on the past construction methods are showing that the consecutive fixing structures formed on the slab side are to reduce the fixing iron parts numbers and to improve constructability which will shorten the construction period and provide the economic viability. However, the fixing parts of slab side are short of edge distances suggested by the design code that it is difficult to measure the anchor's capability. So, in order to cope with the short edge distance while to maintain the fixing status, a thin steel sheet is used to reinforce the slab side. From this experiment, we have attained the tensile strength of each fixing part and which is compared to the value suggested by the design code. The final results are as follows. 1. The existing design code requires the edge distance of 1.5times the anchor's embedment depth but we have achieved the more tensile strength than the design code suggests. 2. From two kinds of experiments on the tensile strength, the current design code (ACI 318-08) requiring the anchor embedment depth within 100mm is so conservative that it needs to be modified. 3. The study is proposing the ideal slab side details for the ideal breakout failure such as the slab thickness more than 180mm and the embedment depth less than 75mm.","PeriodicalId":430428,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Conference on Automation Science and Engineering (CASE)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130657323","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
