I use this scene as a starting point to suggest that Penelope is deeply implicated in narrative endings in the Odyssey. Looking at the end or τέλος of the poem through a systematic study of its “closural allusions,” I argue that a teleological analysis of Penelope’s character in relation to endings may both resolve some of the issues in her interpretation thus far, and open up new avenues for the reading of the Odyssey as a poem informed by endings.","PeriodicalId":43032,"journal":{"name":"HELIOS","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2020-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1353/HEL.2020.0001","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48766222","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At the same time, it suggests that even within this limited range of meaning, καίριος also implicitly incorporates connotations that only later emerge in the history of the noun καιρός, which does not appear in Homer. That conclusion is supported by the clear presence of the sense of \"opening\" or \"aperture\" in the instances of Homeric καίριος—a sense that John Onians (1988) and Bernard Gallet (1990) argue is fundamental to the meaning of καιρός. The connotations of καίριος include not simply spatial but also temporal, intentional, and situational references that together have bearing on how successful human action is understood.","PeriodicalId":43032,"journal":{"name":"HELIOS","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2020-02-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1353/hel.2019.0006","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44547392","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In each case, women of varying social statuses become models of constantia under extreme physical duress. In the first instance, Octavia's servant women refuse to lie about their mistress's chastity and thus provide Nero with a legitimate rationale for his divorce. In the second, the freedwoman Epicharis staunchly refuses to inform against her co-conspirators involved in the Pisonian conspiracy. Tacitus uses these episodes to reflect upon the few, ennobling forms of resistance to Nero, and to provide female parallels to the Stoic opposition of Thrasea Paetus. Furthermore, both episodes illustrate Tacitus's concern with the freedom of speech (libertas) during the reign of a tyrant. Tacitus, at a loss for many models among elite men, finds incorruptible exempla in lower-class women.","PeriodicalId":43032,"journal":{"name":"HELIOS","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2020-02-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1353/hel.2019.0008","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48362657","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Here, bringing insights from transgender studies, I argue that when Lucius reports on the galli, he is unknowingly observing an alternative community of trans women rather than cinaedi. Further, a transgenderstudies reading of the novel recuperates the galli as developed characters with their own interiority and agency and allows us to see how their transing in Book 8 sheds light on Lucius's bodily and spiritual transformations later in the novel. As both historical figures and characters within the narrative, the galli set a compelling precedent for an ancient trans identity that conceives of the self as authoritative, without recourse to the physical body as a source of truth.","PeriodicalId":43032,"journal":{"name":"HELIOS","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2020-02-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1353/hel.2019.0009","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41375928","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Previous scholars have tended either to deny any erotic component to Achilles and Patroclus's bond or to assume that the Iliad unproblematically depicts them as lovers. Others have hinted at the possibility of a deliberate homoerotic subtext between the two heroes but have adduced little specific evidence other than the intensity of their emotional connection. In this article, I show that Achilles and Patroclus in the Iliad are analogous to a husband and wife by presenting specific examples from the text of how their relationship structure and affective bond mirror those of Homeric husband-wife couples. I conclude that the poem portrays Achilles and Patroclus's relationship as a conjugal bond in order to highlight Achilles' alienation from traditional social structures as well as the excessive and transgressive nature of his affective responses. I also suggest that Homeric epic presents the ideal conjugal bond as being characterized by the potential for power exchange and role reversal rather than by strict hierarchy.","PeriodicalId":43032,"journal":{"name":"HELIOS","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2020-02-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1353/hel.2019.0007","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45397492","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Muchos de los estudiantes del nivel secundario tienen muy poco conocimiento del impacto del ingles en la vida cotidiana ya que no le toman la debida importancia ni dedicacion al aprendizaje de esta segunda lengua, pasando las horas escolares solo como receptores de gramatica (agentes pasivos). Se quiere con el presente trabajo contribuir de manera significativa a reducir un problema latente, cual es la violencia escolar, mediante la elaboracion de una cancion con mensaje de la no violencia. Existen diferentes maneras y modos de acoso escolar, partiendo del juego insano de los apodos hasta llegar a peleas grupales o individuales. Sentimos asi la satisfaccion de ser parte del cambio para nuestra comunidad educativa, siendo responsables de nuestras acciones y que estas sean siempre pensando en construir valores para llevarnos bien unos a otros. De esta forma, el elemento aplicado en este proyecto fue la musica que dentro de nuestro cerebro funciona como agente motivador para la creacion de conocimientos en forma permanente y significativa, la cual rompe con la rutina y nos llena de alegria y diversion, Es por ello que nuestra propuesta es sacar del contexto netamente academico y gramatical con nuestro libro de ingles a ser participes de la creacion de la mejor forma de expresar nuestro sentir con respecto al problema escolar ya mencionado e innovar transmitiendo mensajes positivos para crear un mundo mejor. En este proyecto se utilizo el metodo descriptivo para poder dar a conocer al detalle las variables de estudio como son el aprendizaje del idioma ingles y su uso en canciones. Para ello se siguio un cronograma de actividades: la seleccion del tema de investigacion, recoleccion de datos, la aplicacion del pretest a los estudiantes del primer ano de secundaria del IEP Dante Alighieri para saber si hacen uso del idioma ingles y si tienen conocimiento basico de este, Se utilizaron textos con lemas sobre la no violencia en ritmos de canciones elegidos por los mismos alumnos en espanol e ingles, Se canto la cancion creada por el aula, haciendo uso de imagenes y/o simbolos, la aplicacion del postest para medir el incremento del aprendizaje del idioma ingles (nuevo vocabulario y pronunciacion)y el procesamiento de informacion. Asi como papel bond, lapiceros, laptop, internet, impresora, diccionario ingles – espanol, fotos y videos. Se logro demostrar que el idioma ingles utilizado en canciones incrementa su aprendizaje. Tambien se pudo transmitir un mensaje sobre la no violencia a la comunidad trujillana cuando se canto en el parque e hicimos uso de material visual (corazones y palomas)","PeriodicalId":43032,"journal":{"name":"HELIOS","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2020-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48136624","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
