This Special Issue seeks to advance and expand thinking, research and practice of a restorative approach at the level of institu‐ tions and social systems, from families to workplaces. The articles and notes from the field included here were developed out of the 2016 International Conference in Halifax, Nova Scotia, that shared the title and focus of this issue. The confer‐ ence was held to fulfil a commitment made by the parties involved in a restora‐ tive justice process at the Faculty of Dentistry, Dalhousie University, in 2015 (Lle‐ wellyn et al, 2015). As Mary McNally’s note from the field (this issue) explains, the process was undertaken to deal with harms related to a private Facebook group that contained sexist and other harmful comments from a group of male fourth-year students directed at their female classmates and more generally reflecting unprofessional behaviour.1 Many in the university, the professional and the general public assumed that the restorative justice process was focused at the level of the interpersonal relationships and harms involved in the incident. In fact, however, the process revealed and responded to the significant institutional climate and culture issues that were reflected in and structuring the interpersonal relationships involved. It also became clear through the process that examining and shifting interpersonal relationships was the key to bringing the institutionallevel changes required within the faculty, the university and the profession to address the issues and harms involved and to bring change for the future. This broader focus brought by a restorative approach was surprising to many outside and even some inside the field of restorative justice. It stretched the relational ecology of restorative justice from the use of tools and practices for conflict reso‐ lution and discipline to the level of institutions and systems by attending to their relational nature and impact expressed through climate and culture.","PeriodicalId":430026,"journal":{"name":"The International Journal of\n Restorative Justice","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122919484","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article reviews some of the long-standing and current chal‐ lenges for governance of programmes in maintaining cultures that safeguard restorative and responsive standards, principles and values, thereby amplifying and enhancing their centrality to relational engagement within families, groups, communities and organisations. Despite their potential for helping groups of people grapple with the complex dynamics that impact their lives, restorative justice approaches are seen as no less vulnerable to being whittled down to technical rou‐ tines through practitioner and sponsor colonisation than other practices. This arti‐ cle explores some of the ways culture can work to erode and support the achieve‐ ment of restorative standards, and why restorative justice and regulation that is responsive to the ongoing experiences of affected persons offers unique paths for‐ ward for achieving justice. Included in this exploration are the ways that moral panic and top-down, command-and-control management narrow relational approaches to tackling complex problems and protect interests that reproduce social and economic inequality.","PeriodicalId":430026,"journal":{"name":"The International Journal of\n Restorative Justice","volume":"113 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124773809","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An examination of the gen‐ erative role of peer mentoring and its overlap with restorative justice as a healing process that provides opportunities for offenders to make indirect amends that con‐ tribute to the social rehabilitation of their communities is presented. An overview of the history and anticipated aims of mentoring programmes for justice-involved youth is provided, followed by a discussion of the importance of secondary desist‐ ance in peer mentoring programmes and a review of the elements, conceptual underpinnings and anticipated benefits of the training programme for the mentors. The training programme is argued to offer approaches that support the primary and secondary desistance-orientated changes and the reparative work needed within the mentor.","PeriodicalId":430026,"journal":{"name":"The International Journal of\n Restorative Justice","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125089462","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At 20, in 1955, he participated in the Congress of the People, where the Freedom Charter was adopted. Following law school, he defended people charged under racial statutes and security laws. Jailed for this work, he eventually had to leave the country. In 1988, while in exile in Mozambique, Albie lost an arm and sight in one eye in a car bomb explosion planned by South African military operatives. Undaunted, he continued his activ‐ ism, eventually taking part in drafting South Africa’s democratic Constitution. In 1994, he was appointed to the Constitutional Court by Nelson Mandela and stayed as a justice on the court until 2009. An accomplished author, Albie is one of only two people to win the Alan Paton Award twice – in 1991 for his book The soft vengeance of a freedom fighter and in 2014 for The strange alchemy of life and law. A documentary about his life, Soft vengeance: Albie Sachs and the new South Africa, by filmmaker Abby Ginzberg, was released in 2013.","PeriodicalId":430026,"journal":{"name":"The International Journal of\n Restorative Justice","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115162875","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
