Among these, two significant literary and political reviews, I Quindici and Contropiano, played a pivotal role in these movements. My paper aims to analyse the aesthetic and textual makeup of these publications by examining the significance of these journals in the context of the explosive political climate that led to the cycle of protests in streets, schools and factories.","PeriodicalId":42991,"journal":{"name":"FORUM FOR MODERN LANGUAGE STUDIES","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135854411","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Dada in the Underground: Linkeck and West Berlin’s Anti-Authoritarian Newspapers, 1968–69","authors":"Mererid Puw Davies","doi":"10.1093/fmls/cqad043","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1093/fmls/cqad043","url":null,"abstract":"Abstract This article explores the importance of periodicals for the 1960s protest movements in West Germany. It opens with the significance of both mainstream news media and New Left journals. Attention then turns to a different class of periodical, the anti-authoritarian underground newspaper, examined here through one emblematic example, linkeck [leftangle], which was produced in a centre of revolt, West Berlin, in 1968–69. While linkeck had limited circulation and was short-lived, it achieved notoriety and gave rise to a series of successors. To understand linkeck’s impact and meanings, this article comments on its origins in an anti-authoritarian commune and its philosophy on work, politics and relationships; its ephemerality; its influences and interests; its distinctive style and its conflicts with the law. In conclusion, the essay argues that linkeck epitomizes anti-authoritarian themes and form, and that periodicals were the movements’ most characteristic genre. Throughout, the essay also considers key resonances between linkeck and earlier twentieth-century (anti-)artistic avant-gardes, notably Dada.","PeriodicalId":42991,"journal":{"name":"FORUM FOR MODERN LANGUAGE STUDIES","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136062644","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It also explains the conservatism of Romanian cultural and political institutions at that moment. The article addresses the question of why Nicolae Ceaușescu’s nationalist communist regime prevented Romanian May 68 upheavals from taking place. It argues that the events of May 1968 cannot be separated from August 1968 (the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia) and from the two previous decades of Soviet control over Romanian culture. In such a context, nationalism was perceived as an emancipation compared to the previous Stalinist era, and any favourable echo of the French 1968 social movements would have challenged it. The article argues that the view of Romania’s 1968 that emerges in periodicals challenges the perspective that May 68 represented youthful revolt against capitalist systems. Instead, a more nuanced picture is required, one that is specific to Romania at that time.","PeriodicalId":42991,"journal":{"name":"FORUM FOR MODERN LANGUAGE STUDIES","volume":"158 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135141734","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It considers not only decisions made by the translators of individual texts, but also the choice of texts published, the status of the translator as writer, support for writers overseas and a new interest in France from the late 1960s in theories of translation. The reviews are read alongside the archive of the Union des Écrivains, founded in the wake of the Paris Events in May–June 1968, in which the reviews’ editors were active. Having identified values espoused by the Union on the basis of archival research, the article argues that the reviews’ translation practices informed Union activities and were influenced in turn by those activities. The article aims to demonstrate that the literary review represents an important, and previously underexamined, transnational dimension of the 1968 era.","PeriodicalId":42991,"journal":{"name":"FORUM FOR MODERN LANGUAGE STUDIES","volume":"98 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135739890","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It considers the Moroccan journal as an archetypal May 1968 publication; first, by tracing the dramatic shift that Souffles makes between 1966 and 1969 from literary and cultural journal to revolutionary mouthpiece of Marxist anti-Zionism, and which takes place in a period of pan-Arabist crisis and during the social unrest of 1968–1971 in Morocco; and second, by looking closely at the theoretical and philosophical innovations of Abraham Serfaty, alongside the agitational poetry of Abdellatif Laâbi and the political theories emerging in sub-Saharan Africa and the Francophone Caribbean, that appear in Souffles in the wake of May 1968 in France. Finally, it locates an incipient Maoism in the radicalization of Souffles.","PeriodicalId":42991,"journal":{"name":"FORUM FOR MODERN LANGUAGE STUDIES","volume":"171 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135966417","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Situationist International (SI) was, by design, a mercurial organization whose existence was marked by clandestine activity, conflict – internally and externally – scandal and subversion in multiple guises. The twin concepts of détournement [hijacking] and récupération [recovery] will be explored to show why the recourse to the terminology of war was more than a commonplace rhetorical trope for the SI. The group’s deployment of militaristic language reflects, first, the real-life attention the Situationists received from the forces of order and, secondly, an antagonism which underpinned their conception of political action. Their eponymous journal or review was not itself a privileged organ of the Situationist International, intellectually or aesthetically, but ‘heavy artillery’ which provided a convenient platform to become known to an active readership.","PeriodicalId":42991,"journal":{"name":"FORUM FOR MODERN LANGUAGE STUDIES","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136071390","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By doing so, they contributed to the political movements of the 1960s in Italy. The NCI worked to construct a culture of protest through recorded albums, live performances and field research into oral practices. Despite their prominence as the ‘music of 1968’ in Italy, the NCI first came together as a journal. The ten issues of the group’s journal, Il Nuovo Canzoniere Italiano, published between 1962 and 1968, provided materialist and ethnomusicological analysis of oral cultures, as well as the repertoires of rural singers like Giovanna Daffini, and nourished the work of young songwriters. I argue that this journal fostered new militant approaches to culture, documented the artistic vitality of the labouring classes and helped foment the revolutionary sentiments of 1968.","PeriodicalId":42991,"journal":{"name":"FORUM FOR MODERN LANGUAGE STUDIES","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2023-09-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46565739","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
