We analyze the BER performance of the Link-16 simulator over partial-band noise jamming. Especially, we consider a TDL system with the cognitive anti-jamming capability that senses the jamming signal and opportunistically avoids the jamming spectrum. Using that simulator, we verify that the presented TDL system with cognitive anti-jamming capability improves bit-error-rate (BER) performance compared to existing TDL system over jamming environments.","PeriodicalId":429912,"journal":{"name":"International Symposium on Performance Evaluation of Computer and Telecommunication Systems (SPECTS 2014)","volume":"191 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123278701","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An effective resource management middleware is necessary to harness the power of the underlying distributed hardware in a cloud. The resource manager needs to be able to effectively perform mapping (matchmaking and scheduling) of user requests (jobs) on to resources to satisfy desired system objectives as well as user's requirements for a quality of service that is often captured in a service level agreement (SLA). This paper concerns the problem of meeting an end-to-end SLA (characterized by an earliest start time, an execution time, and a deadline) for applications that require service from multiple resources (referred to as multi-stage applications) on a system subjected to an open stream of request arrivals. A new budget-based algorithm and a resource manager called MapReduce Budget-based Resource Manager (MRBB-RM) are devised for effectively performing matchmaking and scheduling of an open stream of MapReduce jobs (a popular multi-stage application) with SLAs on a distributed environment such as a cloud or a cluster. A detailed description of the algorithm and its performance analysis are presented.","PeriodicalId":429912,"journal":{"name":"International Symposium on Performance Evaluation of Computer and Telecommunication Systems (SPECTS 2014)","volume":"87 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132318764","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Hence, DNS availability and performance is essential for the operation of the Internet and replication and load balancing is used for the root and top level name servers. This paper proposes an architecture for credit based server load balancing (SLB) for DNS. Compared to traditional load balancing algorithms like round robin or least connection, the benefit of credit based SLB is that the load balancer can adapt more easily to heterogeneous load requests and heterogeneous back end server capacities. The challenge of this approach is the definition of a suited credit metric. While this was done before for TCP based services like HTTP, the problem was not solved for UDP based services like DNS. This paper presents an approach to define credits also for UDP based services. This UDP/DNS approach is implemented within the credit based SLB implementation salbnet. The presented measurements confirm the benefit of the self-adapting credit based SLB approach.","PeriodicalId":429912,"journal":{"name":"International Symposium on Performance Evaluation of Computer and Telecommunication Systems (SPECTS 2014)","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115810905","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Flows of small packets presenting a high overhead, as the ones generated by emerging services, can be identified by the SDN controller, in order to remove header fields that are common to any packet in the flow, only during their way through the SDN. At the same time, several packets can be multiplexed together in the same frame, thus reducing the number of sent frames. Four kinds of small-packet traffic flows are considered (VoIP, UDP and TCP-based online games, and ACKs from TCP flows). Both IPv4 and IPv6 are tested, and significant bandwidth savings (up to 68 % for IPv4 and 78 % for IPv6) can be obtained for the considered kinds of traffic.","PeriodicalId":429912,"journal":{"name":"International Symposium on Performance Evaluation of Computer and Telecommunication Systems (SPECTS 2014)","volume":"379 ","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120879171","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Consequently, simulation plays a key role in Vehicular Networks development. Simulation models and tools have been improved to better mimic the different factors that affect communications in real world scenarios. In terms of the communications channel, models have evolved from simplistic distance-based models to elaborated stochastic models that take into account both distance and the obstacle layout. However, increasing the complexity of the models also increases the time needed to run simulations. In this paper, we present an optimization applicable to the obstacle model included in VEINS, a well-known VN simulator, which relays on a cache table to accelerate ray-tracing calculations at the physical layer. Our results show that the proposed optimization can reduce by up to 75% the simulation time with minimal differences in terms of simulation results.","PeriodicalId":429912,"journal":{"name":"International Symposium on Performance Evaluation of Computer and Telecommunication Systems (SPECTS 2014)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126890794","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Research on cloud computing has stared considering Service Level Agreement (SLA) characterized by an earliest start time, runtime and a deadline for completion with a request for job execution submitted to the cloud. Estimates of request runtimes provided by users are often error prone. Both overestimation and underestimation of request runtimes are detrimental for system performance. Satisfying SLAS often require Advance Reservation (AR) of resources. This research presents a Soft Advance Reservation (SAR) approach for handling errors associated with estimates of request runtime provided by users. This approach relaxes the strict requirement that all Advance Reservation (AR) requests associated with their respective SLAs must meet their deadlines. Two algorithms based on the SAR approach that adjust the user provided estimates for improving system performance are discussed. A simulation-based performance evaluation is used to demonstrate the effectiveness of these algorithms.","PeriodicalId":429912,"journal":{"name":"International Symposium on Performance Evaluation of Computer and Telecommunication Systems (SPECTS 2014)","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122535728","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These bottlenecks typically occur at larger number of users. It would help enterprise applications significantly if these bottlenecks are known a-priori during the performance testing itself. This paper deals with predicting the performance of such systems and models an application in terms of a two layer queuing network consisting of software resources and hardware resources. The software modules which require exclusive access by a thread are modeled as a queuing resource and other modules are treated as delay resources in the software queuing network. This network in turn uses a hardware queuing network consisting of resources such as CPU, disk and network. The proposed solution is augmented with additional constraints to ensure that the solution converges at a large number of users. Further, the proposed solution is capable of modeling multi-class requests with critical section and pooling of resources e.g., connection pool or thread pool. We validate the proposed solution with actual experimental results using sample programs and observe that the model is able to predict throughput and resource utilization with close to 90% accuracy.","PeriodicalId":429912,"journal":{"name":"International Symposium on Performance Evaluation of Computer and Telecommunication Systems (SPECTS 2014)","volume":"88 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130651164","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Contemporary communication standards use different techniques to deal with these problems; one candidate technique is called Coordinated Multi-Point (CoMP). In this context, we introduce Shared Segmented Upload (SSU), a novel method for uploading large files from a UE to multiple BSs in a CoMP communication sce-nario. We use the Discrete Event System Specification (DEVS) formalism to model a mobile network using two approaches: SSU and a conventional non-cooperative algo-rithm.
