How can our design and construction methods encourage the circular use of materials and components to address this problem? This paper contrasts circular design principles with the design philosophy of lightweight structures to explore their potential for sustainable development. Investigation of these two design concepts reveal the holistic approach in both principles, so that circular design can be derived from lightweight design principles. However, efficient material use as a guiding criterion in lightweight structures alone is not sufficient to implement circular design. Closing material loops can only be achieved by including dismantling and recycling in the design process. This concept is discussed by means of a case study. The research pavilion presented illustrates how rethinking of lightweight structures is possible.

The innovative pavilion discussed in this paper demonstrates a design process and the ambitions of the research group through a full-scale model of large-span spatial structures. The focus of this work is the use of a modified BESO technique to optimize the structure, which features branches of various sizes and then applies 'skin' surfaces according to the direction of the main structure. The innovative production, construction, and assembling methodologies are to replace welded ultimately, forged, and cast components with large robotic 3D printed components and bolting methods. The advantages of the new design and construction process are less labor, fewer joints, shorter assembling time, lower cost & more efficient material usage and more complex & elegant large structural form.

To investigate the effect of nodal deviation, member eccentricity and their couplings on stability of reticulated shell\u0000 with welded hollow sphere joint, a Kiewitt-6 single-layer reticulated shell with aforementioned two kinds of imperfections are chosen as numerical models. A mechanical model of single-layer reticulated shell which can take nodal deviation and member eccentricity simultaneously into consideration\u0000 is firstly put forward. Secondly, implementation steps of the above- mentioned two imperfections in reticulated shell are demonstrated in detail. Then quantify the influence of nodal deviation, member eccentricity and their couplings with different magnitudes on stability of single-layer reticulated\u0000 shell. The results show that nodal deviation has adversely remarkable impact on limit load of reticulated shell, while member eccentricity affects limit load of reticulated shell to a small extent. With the increase of nodal deviation, the influence of member eccentricity on limit load gradually\u0000 decreases. The reduction effect of member eccentricity on limit load of reticulated shell has a close relationship to the magnitude of nodal deviation. The developed mechanical model of single-layer reticulated shell with nodal deviation and member eccentricity and implementation steps can\u0000 be generalized to other space frame structures.

Loop-free suspen-dome was proposed for improving the collapse resistance and reducing cable tensions. The collapse resistance of loop-free suspen-dome has not been verified. In this paper, analysis\u0000 on dynamic response of both current suspen-dome and loop-free suspen-dome induced by sudden cable or strut failure is performed to investigate the collapse resistance. Under the loaded state, cables or struts were suddenly removed from the structure to simulate cables or struts failure. Th\u0000 residual bearing capacity of the structure after the rupture was also analyzed. It is concluded that collapse resistance of the loop-free suspen-dome is good. Failure mode of the loop-free suspen-dome is proportionate. The effect on the loop-free suspen-dome due to initial failure grows proportionately\u0000 along with the quantity of failed members. It also turns out that cables in the loop-free suspen- dome are relatively independent. Only the failed cable loses tension, other cables still remain in tension. It is also found that the most important cable or strut in the loop-free suspen-dome\u0000 is in the outermost layer of the cable-strut system. More concern should be shown to the cables and struts in the outermost layer.

This paper presents a novel experimental setup and finite element modelling of the CSPS structure. The\u0000 experimental setup involves the loading of the structure using pipe clamp loading pad. Scale down models, six scenarios accounting for the effect of mid span depth-span, number of truss modules, member sections, and single and double tubes pipe sections are presented subject to cable tension,\u0000 elastic and ultimate loading of the structure. The load– displacement responses of the six scenarios shows elastic responses and within limit stress until joint failure at ultimate load. Thus, the structure possesses the strength that can support its service life until loaded to the\u0000 ultimate limit of the joints. The failure mode of the structure suggested the need for the cable-truss joints to be design against sudden failure. Parametric evaluation based on member section properties reveals significant deformation when the cable section is reduced compared to other member\u0000 sections. The limit displacement of 64.8m span length (L) in comparison to other cable-supported structures is within L/600 - L/250, subject to check in different scenarios.

The influence of center-hung scoreboard on seismic response of single-layer spherical reticulated shell is not clear. In this paper, the FEA models of coupling systems composed of single-layer spherical reticulated shell and center-hung scoreboard are established. The seismic responses of coupling systems are calculated by explicit dynamic time history method. The seismic responses of the coupling systems are compared between the flexibly suspended case and the simplified case where the scoreboard is simplified as fixed mass of the support platform. The effects of the sling length and the scoreboard weight on seismic responses of the coupling systems are also discussed. Compared with the simplified case, peak values of displacements, accelerations and axial force are significantly different when the scoreboard is flexibly suspended. The treatment method of simplifying the scoreboard as fixed mass of the support platform is dangerous. The sling length and the scoreboard weight have significant effects on peak values of displacements, accelerations and axial forces of the coupling systems. The envelope values under different sling lengths and different weight should be taken as seismic response results for structural design.

Robotic construction is unique in its potential to reproduce highly complex structures. To advance the question of how rapid prototyping techniques are adopted in large-scale 3D printing of forms and structures, this paper presents computational methods for the design and robotic construction of cellular membranes. This research presents a comprehensive morphological model of structurally differentiated cellular membranes based on the theoretical biology model of hierarchical structures found in natural cellular solids, and, more specifically, in trabecular bone. The morphological model originates from a system of forces in equilibrium; therefore, it presents the geometric homology of a static tensional system. This research offers a methodology for the design and manufacture of meso- to large-scale triangulated geometric configurations by discrete design methods that are suitable for the robotic fused deposition of lattices and their architectural implementation in the automated manufacturing of shell structures. First, this paper explores how a form can be digitally created by geometrically emulating a given static system of forces in space. Second, inspired by the complex mechanical behavior of cancellous bone, we apply hierarchical principles found in bone remodeling to characterize discrete units that conform to continuous trabecular-like lattices. We study the geometry, limitations, opportunities for optimization, and mechanical characteristics of the lattice. The computational design methods and additive manufacturing techniques are tested in the design and construction hierarchical structures.

This paper proposes a method for designing a family of deployable structures which can be applied to semi-regular tessellated planar surfaces such as roofs, walls, and shading devices. The generated modular approach and adaptability provides a wide usage area and various combinations for these designs. The regular convex polygon modules are designed as a network of the triangular units. The triangular unit is designed using Bennett’s overconstrained plano-spherical linkage topology. The polygonal modules are assembled to each other in one-uniform semi-regular tessellations. The assembly of adjacent regular convex polygons in each tessellation is examined to find a proper solution for no collision during deployment and to properly fit a surface without any gaps or overlaps in the deployed position. The assembly method for creating 1-DoF deployable surfaces and mobility calculations for a unit, the polygonal modules, and the assemblies are computed, and motion studies are demonstrated with CAD models and exemplified for a square module for motion tests in a prototype.
