Hall’s pyrethrum, or pellitory root, used to treat Mr. Fortescue’s ‘epilepsy’, originated from north Africa, and was sourced from Spain. Hall took the fact that Fortescue was alive some years later as a sign of his proficiency. Wells shows us a serious man doing serious work, building a medical library and using it as a resource of authority. This edition of Hall began as a PhD thesis for which Wells made a faithful transcription of Hall’s Latin manuscript that he then translated into English. Wells’s bilingual thesis established many of the bibliographical references in Hall’s casebook and identified works in Hall’s personal library. Sadly, Wells did not live to see his fine, beautifully illustrated, scholarly edition in print. The work has been brought to publication with extraordinary care, dedication, and love by Paul Edmondson, with the agreement of Wells in his last few weeks of life. As Edmondson explains in his preface, ‘For the first time, it is now possible to read about Hall’s conversations with his patients, his prayers for their recovery, and his thanksgivings for their cures’ (p. xix). This book has been a truly collaborative endeavour that honours the scholar whose assiduous work lies at its heart.","PeriodicalId":428479,"journal":{"name":"Cahiers Élisabéthains","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129650147","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In Teskey’s view, The Faerie Queene is a ‘ruin’ or incomplete poem but this view, which Teskey draws from Martin Heidegger, is not necessarily a bad thing: The Faerie Queene is a polyphonic and discursive work akin to Joyce’s Finnegans Wake. Teskey thus reveals his own poetic method in which a poem is named after it is written, and coherence is, at least potentially, often artificially placed on a work of art after its composition. While Spenser and wider Renaissance scholars may not agree with all of Teskey’s conclusions, Spenserian Moments is a delightful and convincing work. Readers will benefit from Teskey’s lifetime of reading, thinking, and writing about Renaissance literature and Western philosophy. As Teskey himself has argued, the work of Edmund Spenser is often sadly all too neglected even by Renaissance scholars. This neglect is, as Teskey convincingly agues, ironic, for Spenser is as much a ‘postmodern’ thinker as he is a child of the Renaissance.","PeriodicalId":428479,"journal":{"name":"Cahiers Élisabéthains","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133006877","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
