This play, in Japanese, is presented in the spirit of Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot and features two aging Shakespearean actors trying to recover their memory of Shakespearean lines and scenes they once acted, while they wait for ‘Will’, a pun on William Shakespeare as well as on one's last will and testament. Waiting for Will is part of a genealogy of alternative theatre in Japan. Though the production echoes Western forms, it is still distinctly Japanese in nature.","PeriodicalId":428479,"journal":{"name":"Cahiers Élisabéthains","volume":"165 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124625470","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

De Meyer fully succeeds in her attempt to present a comprehensive analysis of Digby’s complex and multifaceted philosophical system. She offers a compelling study of immense learning that will be of interest to specialists in the fields of early modern science and philosophy. Her work is an important contribution to the mapping of Digby’s significance in English and cross-Channel intellectual networks. Her sensitivity, throughout the volume, to the baroque dimension of Digby’s philosophy is also bound to appeal to readers with a more general interest in the period’s literary and cultural history.","PeriodicalId":428479,"journal":{"name":"Cahiers Élisabéthains","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127375954","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Are we as powerless as Desdemona, as powerless as the mob? As we came closer to the end, I found myself almost wishing for a different ending, a daring challenge to the text on a major UK stage, but it was not to be. We still seem to be incapable of this, still caught in that same 400-year-old ending, in contrast to several non-Anglophone productions. The circus goes on and on, as exemplified by the projected dates at the start, and as it was in the beginning, in 1604, so it is in 2022, the latest offshoot in the eternal merry-go-round. Except, it isn’t really merry anymore, is it? The lady sitting next to us expressed her extreme displeasure at the ending. Questioned as to why, she argued that the production ‘had left out several beautiful lines that are part of Othello’s final speech.’ If anything, this reaction exemplifies the entrapment of Othello, mummified by text, theatre history, and expectation. Now, if this production of Othello was intended to provoke the kind of questions and topics we’ve raised above, it was a brilliant production. I wonder though if that was its intent.","PeriodicalId":428479,"journal":{"name":"Cahiers Élisabéthains","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130960463","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
