This was linked to the earth's high resistance. In the first part of this paper, the aforementioned reason will be proven to be not credible and that the load-side fallen conductor resulted in a very small return current that cannot be detected. In the second part of this paper, the fact that the voltage will build up at the distribution transformer primary side in case the transformer has a primary single phase blown fuse and unbalance loads will be presented","PeriodicalId":427638,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of the 2006 IEEE International Symposium on Electrical Insulation","volume":"201 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-06-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126156723","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main characteristics of this method are that the temperature of the chamber is controlled to cycle in the range of -1 degC to 1 degC with the period of about 50 minutes. An AC test voltage is applied to the sample and raised to flashover at the rate of 3 kV/s when temperature reaches 2 degC in a cycle. The test is continued until the flashover voltage at a cycle is higher than the previous one. A type of short-string composite insulators was investigated using this cold fog method and the conventional steam fog method, respectively. NaCI and kieselguhr were chosen as pollutants and the pollution degree was 0.2/2.0 mg/cm2. For the samples with different initial hydrophobicity, the test results show that the flashover voltages in the cold fog test are 13%-26% lower than that in the steam fog test. It confirms that the winter fog performance of composite insulators should be investigated using the cold fog method at ambient temperatures near 0 degC","PeriodicalId":427638,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of the 2006 IEEE International Symposium on Electrical Insulation","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-06-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125888355","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Impulse breakdown is not included in many specifications but ASTMD3487 does have it. Breakdown behaviour with DC impulses and a heterogeneous gap is very different from the AC breakdown strength. It is designed to simulate lightning pulse striking during a thunderstorm. The result is independent of the contaminants influencing normal breakdown test. A needle and steel ball are used as electrodes, at a distance of 2.5 cm. With a negative impulse to the needle, the breakdown has been found to depend on the degree of oil refinement, with lower aromatic content giving a better/higher value. The most common refining processes are described","PeriodicalId":427638,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of the 2006 IEEE International Symposium on Electrical Insulation","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-06-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116805388","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Any convolutions or protrusions from the semiconductive conductor shield into the insulation layer can result in localized electrical stress and induce undesired treeing or electrical degradation. An investigation of the compound melt rheology and its relationship to conductor shield convolution will be described. It will be shown that the inherent rheological properties of the semiconductive conductor shield compound in combination with the fabrication conditions in the continuous vulcanization of power cable manufacturing process determine the tendency for convolutions to develop","PeriodicalId":427638,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of the 2006 IEEE International Symposium on Electrical Insulation","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-06-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127712901","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The intensive use of modern power electronics in FACTS elements can provide a feasible solution. Especially STATCOM and UPFC, for their versatile application can be the method of choice. Voltage sourced converters with IGBTs are used for compensation, providing both leading and lagging power. Filters need to be applied to block the high frequencies, generated by the large slew-rate of the converter pulses, from the connecting transformers. Their impact on the oil-cellulose insulation system as well as on most of the other dielectric insulation materials is unknown. This includes the breakdown voltage at higher frequencies as well as possible influences on accelerated aging. The first step in a breakdown investigation of any AC insulation system at frequencies beyond 10 kHz is the generation of a test voltage. Derived by the strength of transformerboard at 50 Hz, an amplitude of 100 kV needs to be provided to exceed its insulation capabilities. Based on investigations concerning enameled wires, where the dielectric strength dropped by factor 10, similar eventualities need to be taken into account in the design. A resonance principle was chosen to generate the test voltage of frequencies between 10 kHz and 250 kHz with an amplitude up to 100 kV. Major challenge in the design is a reduction of losses in the circuit, caused either by resistivity or by corona discharge. Insulation failure, other than at the specimen, obviously has to be excluded as well. With the resulting voltage source, miscellaneous dielectric materials will be tested for breakdown and aging, starting in this investigation with oil and its combinations with cellulose","PeriodicalId":427638,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of the 2006 IEEE International Symposium on Electrical Insulation","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-06-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129447608","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A variety of different techniques is available to detect the partial discharge activity. The measurements are carried out with electrical, acoustical, optical and chemical techniques. Beside the detection of the individual partial discharge impulse and its impulse behaviour with the conventional electrical methods, the exact localization of the partial discharges is very important for an efficient maintenance. Therefore unconventional methods, for example the acoustical or the optical detection, are in use. In a research project an optical partial discharge measurement system was developed. In this paper a comparison between the optical and the conventional electrical measurement system is carried out for different insulation media at a peak-plate arrangement","PeriodicalId":427638,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of the 2006 IEEE International Symposium on Electrical Insulation","volume":"100 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-06-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132825488","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

On this account thermal, electrical, and a combination of thermo-electrical stresses were applied to a number of cast-resin samples, and their effects were evaluated via partial discharge measurements. Stress duration as well as time without stress was varied. This information will be used in a statistical method to recognise the influence of the duration of the applied stress on the partial discharge activity of every sample. The statistical method is the analysis of variance (ANOVA), which is useful when the frequency distribution of the measurements is a so-called normal distribution. All measurements were carried out following this distribution and thus the reliability of such tests is only dependent on the linear behaviour of the following variables: partial discharge inception and extinction voltage, number of discharge impulses, sum of the charges of all impulses, and average charge per impulse. The other variables are the stress duration and the time without stress. In order to recognise variations which only correspond to the same effect, tests must be ordered in groups with the same characteristics. Tests must also be performed in continuous and repetitive cycles under stress in order to avoid undesirable effects. The results of these experiments may form the basis for the identification of a relationship between one or more partial discharge parameters and the stress duration","PeriodicalId":427638,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of the 2006 IEEE International Symposium on Electrical Insulation","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-06-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130499017","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
