The METATE project aims to explore the long-term history, from Prehispanic times until today, of the production and use of grinding stone tools (metates and molcajetes) on the slopes of the El Metate volcano (Michoacán, Central Mexico). It has been approached through a multidisciplinary program including volcanology, archaeology, and anthropology. The village of Turícuaro has been recognized for centuries as a major center of metate production for the entire Purépecha region in Michoacán. According to the few remaining craftsmen who make metates (metateros) in the village of Turícuaro, the quality of the rock selected and the organization of metate production have undergone significant changes during recent decades. We discuss how the introduction of new mechanical and electronic devices has generated important social consequences at the domestic, village, and regional scales.","PeriodicalId":42668,"journal":{"name":"Ethnoarchaeology","volume":"18 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138508282","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This long-term research has employed archaeological, ethnoarchaeological, and traditional knowledge approaches. Traditional knowledge is often understood to be an accumulation of knowledge and “know how” acquired and handed down through generations of ancestors. Ethnoarchaeology involves ethnographic studies to build analogies, models, and ways of understanding that can be applied to the archaeological record for interpretive purposes. Increasingly, archaeology and ethnoarchaeology integrate traditional knowledge research by working with community members. This article presents results of two projects separated by 13 years that together demonstrate the effectiveness of combining these approaches for understanding the archaeological past in northern highland Ethiopia. Importantly, incorporating traditional knowledge into research methodologies also ensures that Indigenous people have a voice in explaining their past. KEYWORDS: Traditional knowledgeethnoarchaeologyTigraiNorthern Ethiopiafoodwaysgrinding stonescrop processingIndigenous voices AcknowledgementsWe sincerely appreciate the community consultants who shared their traditional knowledge with us.
