As social networks evolve, they encourage users to share more information, requiring the users, in turn, to place more trust into social networks. In centralized systems, this means trusting a third-party commercial entity, like Facebook or MySpace. Peer-to-peer (P2P) systems can enable the creation of online social networks extending trust to friends only. In this paper, we present a novel approach to constructing completely decentralized social networks through P2P overlays, OverSoc. Our approach relies on a common directory overlay, which facilitates friend discovery and bootstraps connectivity to individualized profile overlays. Each user has their own individual profile overlay managed transparently using a public key infrastructure (PKI). We define necessary interfaces for constructing the system and describe some examples of user interactions with the system.","PeriodicalId":426248,"journal":{"name":"2010 19th IEEE International Workshops on Enabling Technologies: Infrastructures for Collaborative Enterprises","volume":"119 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116274754","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Renewable energies are provided by natural resources (sunlight, wind, water, and geothermal heat) through the use of engineering technologies able to collect the energy and to convert it in a more usable form. ICT can play a significant role in this context, especially if it is considered as a whole thus reusing much of the theories developed in other sectors.","PeriodicalId":426248,"journal":{"name":"2010 19th IEEE International Workshops on Enabling Technologies: Infrastructures for Collaborative Enterprises","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116971778","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Traditionally the main method of control available to combat it has been the efficient control of traffic lights. The recent rise of intelligent mobile devices carried by road users offers an additional point of control, potentially enabling the manipulation of the routes that people take within the city. The current paper combines the use of such devices with intelligent agents representing different transport segments within the city, including roads, trams, busses and trains. It fuses them in a novel technique which attempts to evenly spread the traffic load throughout the different transport options within the city. In addition the system is capable of rebalancing this load dynamically in response to any events which reduce the capacity of a given transport segment within the city. The system complements the existing work on traffic light control.","PeriodicalId":426248,"journal":{"name":"2010 19th IEEE International Workshops on Enabling Technologies: Infrastructures for Collaborative Enterprises","volume":"101 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116115586","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Transactional Rollback allows the system to return back to a previous, stable and known state. However, to perform such a rollback, it is necessary to store a large amount of information including configuration and installation logs, as well as different versions of software packages. Nevertheless, much of this information is common to several users using the same software and performing the same operations. We can reduce the total amount of storage by having a decentralized architecture using a Distributed Hash Table (DHT) to localise shared resources. We propose a lock-free key/value-set protocol to add and remove data from the DHT. The lock-free protocol is not limited to transactional rollback, and it can be used by other applications that also need value-sets as part of their stored data.","PeriodicalId":426248,"journal":{"name":"2010 19th IEEE International Workshops on Enabling Technologies: Infrastructures for Collaborative Enterprises","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115355292","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Cloud computing promises to increase the velocity with which applications are deployed, increase innovation, and lower costs, all while increasing business agility. But, is the migration to the Cloud the most profitable option for every business? This article presents a study of the basic parameters for estimating the potential costs deriving from building and deploying applications on cloud and on-premise assets.","PeriodicalId":426248,"journal":{"name":"2010 19th IEEE International Workshops on Enabling Technologies: Infrastructures for Collaborative Enterprises","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123541701","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, in order to obtain transparency and simplicity towards users it was necessary to complicate both the internal layout and the organization of the middlewares. Today, a grid middleware is composed of numerous software services that, interacting among them, manage many tasks, which are not always independent of each other: if it is not properly monitored and managed, this type of organization can lead to errors in middleware functioning that directly affect on overall system performance. The solution taken by current implementations of the main grid middlewares to reduce the impact of such errors are inadequate: they are limited to a small number of very common errors and usually consist of the repetition of step failed. In this paper, the authors take into account the issues related to the dependability in grid middleware and give an example of a dependable job submission process using the gLite middleware.","PeriodicalId":426248,"journal":{"name":"2010 19th IEEE International Workshops on Enabling Technologies: Infrastructures for Collaborative Enterprises","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129786491","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Performance analyses and predictions with respect to different load conditions or management policies are essential instruments to define such strategies. In this paper, we present a non-Markovian Stochastic Petri Net model that allows to conduct performance analyses of Grid systems focusing on aspects related to the Virtual Organization as a whole. Different job allocation techniques will be evaluated with respect to both user and provider point-of-views. We will also investigate the influence of different information update policies on the accuracy of the allocation schemes, highlighting the costs/benefits in terms of job waiting time, service availability, and system utilization.","PeriodicalId":426248,"journal":{"name":"2010 19th IEEE International Workshops on Enabling Technologies: Infrastructures for Collaborative Enterprises","volume":"68 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133589832","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This introduces two key issues that need to be addressed to fully leverage the potential that the new servers and virtualization offer: 1. The operation and management of virtual services have to be decoupled from the operation and management of the server, network and storage physical infrastructure that hosts them 2. Resource provisioning must be application sensitive, dynamic to meet the transient nature of services that can migrate and must accommodate latency constraints of services that utilize them. The second international IEEE Workshop On collaboration & Cloud Computing under the aegis of 19th IEEE International Workshops on Enabling Technologies: Infrastructures for Collaborative Enterprises (WETICE) 2010, is devoted to address the operation and management issues in the next generation cloud computing. Seven papers discuss various aspects of bringing telecom grade “trust” and global interoperability to distributed collaborating computing clouds.","PeriodicalId":426248,"journal":{"name":"2010 19th IEEE International Workshops on Enabling Technologies: Infrastructures for Collaborative Enterprises","volume":"581 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133084367","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
