Now we are at the border that the difference between digital characters and real ones are vanishing. In this course we will introduce the fundamental knowledge of how to create digital characters. A state-of-the-art workflow consists of three stages: creating of the facial and body puppet, applying the right deformation techniques to the puppet, and driving the puppet with keyframe animation or motion capture data through retargeting. Our goal is to present the best practice guide in terms of making digital humans for visual production. We start with an general overview of the process on how to make digital characters. It then focuses on the details about production of facial and body puppets through 3D acquisition of geometry and texture, template registration techniques that are based on generic deformation or morphable models, using deformation transfer to automatically create believable poses, and how to use motion capture data to enhance the current poses. The second part of the course will introduce various important deformation techniques such as skinning, pose space deformation, and how to do volumetric deformation based on real body medical imaging data. Finally several animation techniques will be presented to show how to make puppets perform.","PeriodicalId":425731,"journal":{"name":"SIGGRAPH Asia 2015 Courses","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114378102","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such rapid prototyping environment is ideal for entertainment computing, as well as for artists and live performances using real-time interactive graphics. We share the expertise we developed in connecting the real-time graphics with on-stage performance with the Illimitable Space System (ISS) v2. We include various presentation options ranging from half-day to 1-hour style with the default of half-day and making the course delivery more flexible; topics can be modularly added or subtracted per the syllabi that follow.","PeriodicalId":425731,"journal":{"name":"SIGGRAPH Asia 2015 Courses","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126625797","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Hydra delivers high performance with the scalability to support interactive animation of fully rigged characters as well as the pre-cached data sets used for large crowds, detailed set dressing, and dynamic special effects. The implementation takes full advantage of the latest GPU techniques including multi-threaded data preparation, GPU compute, and instanced, indirect drawing. Hydra incorporates OpenSubdiv and an extensible shading system to support the high-fidelity needed to allow production artists to work with confidence and in context. This short course sheds light on the acquisition ecosystem with three of its most important components that consist in accurate acquisition methods for geometry and reflectance as well as strategies towards an efficient acquisition pipeline to fulfill the demands of industry with respect to mass digitization of 3D contents. In this context, this course provides a thorough overview of the standard methods for the acquisition of both geometry and reflectance of surfaces with different types of reflectance behavior ranging from diffuse over opaque to specular surfaces or even translucent and transparent surfaces. These standard acquisition techniques are - by design - only well-suited for a limited range of surface materials and, hence, not adequate if no prior information with respect to the surface reflectance behavior is available. For this reason, we also discuss recent advances towards an efficient, fully automatic acquisition in the scope of the concluding remarks.","PeriodicalId":425731,"journal":{"name":"SIGGRAPH Asia 2015 Courses","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130531274","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
