These wells are frequently sited and designed without adequate knowledge of the local hydrogeology and the targeted aquifer. Unfortunately, uninformed well siting and design is a common practice not only in Europe but also in many developing countries. The practice can not only jeopardize basic well function but also lead to a number of widely cited consequences to the environment, such as, undesired aquifer water mixing, hazardous soil subsidence, and the drying up of surface water bodies or springs. This brief paper highlights the key groundwater investigation procedures for more informed well siting and design to help mitigate against undesired environmental consequences. The subject has been discussed in recent literature, however this paper contributes practical insight based on the author’s real-world experience that may be valuable to the practitioner. The paper describes important procedures which should always be part of any water well project, regardless how much water is to be extracted. The paper addresses three issues critical to siting and designing wells: 1) the need for preliminary investigations and potential environmental impacts 2) the key experts that should be involved in these investigations; and 3) the core tasks of the hydrogeologist. Explanatory figures and references are given.","PeriodicalId":42515,"journal":{"name":"Acque Sotterranee-Italian Journal of Groundwater","volume":"55 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2023-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80438822","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The principal components analysis (PCA), diagram of deuterium versus oxygen-18, and equilibrium diagrams Mg/Na and Ca/Na were the techniques used to combine different datasets in order to identify chemical and isotopic groups, which were in turn used to define the groundwater flow paths. In addition, on the basis of thermodynamic equilibrium, it is possible to define the chemical evolution of the Tindouf basin aquifer. The results of this study are consistent with the generally accepted hydrogeological conceptual model. The combination of the different methods made possible to define and and to characterise the main groundwater flow paths from their sources to the discharge zones. These flow paths are defined by water categories, which are represented by salinity and groundwater origin. This approach can be used to analyze aquifers characterized by a lack of data and can also be useful for studying other complex groundwater basins.","PeriodicalId":42515,"journal":{"name":"Acque Sotterranee-Italian Journal of Groundwater","volume":"94 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2023-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91024269","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In detail, specific objectives are to determine the recharge mode of the aquifer, to propose solutions for the groundwater overexploitation and to remedy the seawater problem in its northeastern part. The application of three statistical methods (Pettitt’s, Buishand’s U statistic and, Lee and Heghinian’s tests) and two drought indices (SPI and Ipmc) allowed identifying the wet and dry periods for the time interval 1906-2018. In addition, the piezometric maps analysis for the years 1973, 1981, 2015 and 2020 was carried out to investigate the hydrodynamic behavior of the study area and to determine the effect of the hydrological regime on the hydrogeological functioning of the aquifer. Results obtained by the application of the three statistical methods and two drought indices indicate two distinct periods. The first period is wet and it extends from 1906 to 1973, while the second period is dry and it goes from 1974 to 2018. It is characterised by a rainfall deficit between 15% and 19% compared to the previous period (1906-1973). Furthermore, a significant drawdown in the piezometric levels is observed from 1973 to 2020, varying between 10 and 80 m, that indicates a negative trend of piezometric levels. This drawdown coincides with the rainfall deficit noticed during the period 1973-2018. Also, seawater intrusion was observed in the northeastern part of the plain. To enhance groundwater management, an effective remediation strategy is to use an artificial recharge technique from the existing wastewater treatment plants in the region, complemented by stopping the pumping of wells in coastal zones that are affected by seawater intrusion supplemented by a hydro-chemical monitoring of the groundwater.","PeriodicalId":42515,"journal":{"name":"Acque Sotterranee-Italian Journal of Groundwater","volume":"476 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2023-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78118996","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper investigates the feasibility of using Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) for solving the inverse problem of locating in time and space the source of a contamination event in a homogeneous and isotropic two dimensional domain. ANNs are trained in order to implement an input-output relationship which associates the position. Once the output of the system is known, the input is reconstructed by inverting the trained ANNs. The approach is applied for studying a theoretical test case where the inverse problem is solved on the basis of measurements of contaminant concentrations in monitoring wells located in the studied area. Groundwater pollution sources are characterized by varying spatial location and duration of activity. To identify these unknown pollution sources, concentration measurements data of monitoring wells are used. If concentration observations are missing over a length of time after an unknown source has become active, it is more difficult to correctly identify the unknown pollution source. In this work, a missing data scenario has been taken into consideration. In particular, a case where only one measurement has been made after the pollutant source interrupted its activity has been considered.","PeriodicalId":42515,"journal":{"name":"Acque Sotterranee-Italian Journal of Groundwater","volume":"8 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2022-12-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74300870","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Constant pressure head tests were used to calculate the hydraulic conductivity of each column, while leaching experiments were run to estimate total porosity and specific retention, and for each treatment three replicates were done. Columns were then run under saturated conditions via a low flow peristaltic pump and monitored for chloride concentrations. CXTFIT 2.0 was employed to inversely model the column experiments and retrieve effective porosity and longitudinal dispersivity. Results highlighted small changes of hydraulic conductivity and porosity, induced by graphene addition for both soils. A marked increase of specific retention values was instead recorded in the amended columns respect to control ones. Chloride breakthrough curves modelling showed that graphene doubled dispersivity in the calcareous sandy soil compared to the control, while it halved dispersivity in the siliciclastic riverine soil with respect to the control. The results highlight that graphene induces positive shift in the capacity of sandy soil to retain porewater but at the same time it also alters solute transport parameters, like dispersivity, suggesting that further studies need to focus on using several exposure concentrations, durations and mode of exposure, and apply simulated field conditions or perform experiments in real field conditions, to understand the fate of unwanted compound in soils amended with graphene.","PeriodicalId":42515,"journal":{"name":"Acque Sotterranee-Italian Journal of Groundwater","volume":"14 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2022-12-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87497199","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
