Using the example of French structuralism and its reception in the Federal Republic of Germany around 1966, the article shows that magazines did not simply depict or discuss theoretical “models” and “movements”, but actively formed them. Journalistic forms such as the editorial and the interview, and also text collages typical of magazines played an important role in this process. The specific materiality, publicity, and periodicity of journals thus became decisive factors in theoretical developments and intellectual upheavals.","PeriodicalId":42506,"journal":{"name":"INTERNATIONALES ARCHIV FUR SOZIALGESCHICHTE DER DEUTSCHEN LITERATUR","volume":"45 1","pages":"417 - 438"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2020-11-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1515/iasl-2020-0026","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44335355","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although it was founded solely as a literary society “to promote and extend Goethe’s work and thought,” at certain points in the Society’s history, speakers such as Friedrich Max Müller and Thomas Mann emphasized its political dimensions. Bitzius managed to convince the government in Berne that financial support of the Trachselwald poorhouse would be a good investment with regard to sustainability. He and his fellow members strove for economic independence and self-sufficiency, which implied that the pupils had to work hard and get used to parsimony and modesty as far as food, bedding, clothing and spare time were concerned.
