Emotional eating can be affected by various factors including stress level, physical activity, and nutrients such as magnesium. This study aims at determining the relationship between stress level, physical activity, and consumption pattern of magnesium with emotional eating in overweight adolescents. This study used observational analytic method cross sectional design. Its population was overweight and obese adolescents aged 15-18 years old in Surakarta. The subjects were 122 adolescents taken by purposive sampling. Emotional eating data were collected through Eating and Appraisal Due to Emotions and Stress (EADES) questionnaire, consumption pattern of magnesium data were gathered by using non-quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ), and physical activity data were obtained through International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). Relationship analysis used chi square test with IBM SPSS Statistics 20. The results of show that the stress level had a relationship with the emotional eating in overweight adolescents (p = 0.006), the physical activity had a relationship with the emotional eating in overweight adolescents (p = 0.000), and the consumption pattern of magnesium had a relationship with the emotional eating in overweight adolescents (p = 0.034). Thus, stress level, physical activity, and consumption pattern of magnesium had a relationship with emotional eating in overweight adolescents. Physical activity and consumption pattern of magnesium were the most influential variables on emotional eating in overweight adolescents by 17.8%.","PeriodicalId":424952,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International Conference on Health and Medical Sciences (AHMS 2020)","volume":"172 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131213077","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In daily life, some Indonesian communities have routinely drunk spices and herbs-infused water instead of drinking pure water. However, the efficacy of this mixed water for patients with metabolic syndrome has not been established. The aim of this study was therefore to evaluate the effects of herbs-infused water (HIW) on body weight and waist circumference in patients with metabolic syndrome. This study used a quasi-experiment with pre-posttests control group design. A number of 24 patients who had metabolic syndrome and visited to Cakranegara Health Centre was participated in this study. They were randomly divided into two groups: control group drank water as usual whilst treatment group drank water as usual + 250 ml herbs-infused water for 14 days. Their body weight and waist circumference were measured before and after intervention. There were only 23 research participants who completed this study. Herbs-infused water contained 12,769 ppm of total antioxidant activity. After 14 days treatment, the body weight mean (56.7±9.3 kg) in the treatment group reduced significantly, compared with body weight mean (59.8±10.2 kg) before treatment and (68.1±18 kg) in the control group. In addition, a slightly reduction of waist circumference occurred in the treatment group but not in the control group. In conclusion, regular drinking of 250 ml herbs-infused water for 14 days is able to reduce by 3 kg body weight in patients with metabolic syndrome. This finding may provide an alternative nutrition therapy for metabolic syndrome in future.","PeriodicalId":424952,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International Conference on Health and Medical Sciences (AHMS 2020)","volume":"97 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125393976","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Fast food consumption and snacking with high calories, carbohydrates and fat are very common in adolescent daily life that can cause inflammation by which macrophage infiltration into adipose tissues leading to hypertrophy and hyperplasia. This situation triggers the release of pro- inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-6 (IL-6) which inhibits iron metabolism. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the correlation of fast food consumption and snacking with hemoglobin (Hb) levels in female adolescents. This cross sectional research study was performed among 117 female adolescents of high and vocational schools in Karanganyar Regency, which were selected using the stratified random sampling. Data of fast food consumption and snacking were collected using the Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ), and hemoglobin levels were determined using a hematology analyzer. To test data normality, we used the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. The Spearman rank was used to analyze individual correlation of variables with Hb levels, and all together variables were analyzed using a multiple linear regression test. A total of 17.1 % female adolescents suffered from anemia. Fast food consumption (r = -3.47; p = 0.001) significantly correlated with Hb levels but not for snacking (r = -1.44; p = 0.152). In conclusion, fast food consumption negatively correlates with Hb levels in female adolescents while snacking does not. Education of healthy nutrition is required for prevention of anemia in female adolescents.","PeriodicalId":424952,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International Conference on Health and Medical Sciences (AHMS 2020)","volume":"125 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122244878","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
