Our intentions are to demystify cancer and to show how priorities and positions change over time through talking and writing. This is an iterative and reflexive process which we hope will give readers ideas for future conversations with friends, family and clients.

The question originated from a doctoral course on Deleuzian research methodologies and transversal writing, and is basically the way I, as a confused first-year doctoral student, tried to grasp the concept. In this paper, I return to and reuse my notes from the course and a text message conversation with a colleague in which we experimented with the transversality concept in order to compose a meaningful account. By putting to work a grammatical investigation of the concept of transversality, I ask what it is, what it can be, and what it will do. Guided by a destabilising grammar, the possible practices of transversality are unfolded from the co-constitution of my notes and various texts, events, and phenomena. Finally, I reflect upon the usefulness of this exercise, in relation to the aim of composing a meaningful account and the obligation to justify scientific knowledge production. These practices of destabilising by grammar, connecting texts and experiences, and reflecting on meaning-making are both the methodology of the paper and, at the same time, the result. Hence, research processes can sometimes be vague and uncertain, but still worth a try. McCarthy
Therapy in one way or other has always been about subversion – whether it was the undermining of symptoms, the provision of a transitional space for the considering of serious changes in one’s life, a space for political conversations with social ramifications or more recently the co-creation of a space where the transformation of consciousness might take place. All of these aspects of therapy are about disrupting the habitual, the unseen and the conditioned in our personal and social lives. As such, one could posit that therapy, to be true to its spirit, is transgressive of the taken for granted – those conditioned responses which both keep us going and challenge us to transform. (1) In that way all change is in part a transgressive act. In our moves to evolve or co-evolve there needs to be a going beyond a previous positioning (Simon 2007). This special issue is a celebration of such an evolution and transgressions by many courageous beings in their own small and larger ways of living out a life of difference on the margins. Indeed this marginal siting cannot be but transgressive as they illuminate that which marginalizes in the first place. This paper also relates to a transgression of a small kind. For many years I had worked with metaphors and experiences of marginalization, power, gender inequality, abuse and victimization. These categories seemed quite clear until the intrusion that is described here entered my life and home. What follows is my attempt at deconstructing previous clarities and restorying a lived experience of ambiguities in relation to power and powerlessness. I will explore a power saturated and personally traumatic event as a relational enactment. I have chosen to explicate my own experiences this time as for most presentations and papers, I speak as a professional working with clients who have experienced trauma. However, on this occasion I thought I would take a reverse position and address my own trauma which I first wrote about (for myself) in the immediate aftermath of the event described.

It is a story about me from when I was a newly qualified systemic and family psychotherapist, sharing my inner conversation, dilemmas, hidden emotions and sense of incompetence and confusion about using my first language in therapy in the UK with a male Italian client, muddling through unclear professional boundaries. The story highlights the importance of self-reflexivity and transparency with our own cultural and gendered assumptions in order to promote personal and professional development. A male Mexican non-therapist designer complements the original script with some illustrations. This interplay between art and therapy becomes an enriching dialogue across professional boundaries, which is embedded in the final story. It results in an interweaving of multiple stories and provides a bridge between different perspectives e.g. art and therapy, male and female, therapy and non-therapy, within and outside own culture and language. Finally, the story is presented within a systemic framework and key systemic ideas about living in multiple languages, the socio-constructionist nature of meanings and emotions, the emotional posture in therapy when faced with many dilemmas about ethics, competence, professional boundaries, differences and similarities and their complex interplay in a therapeutic encounter.
This paper describes the rationale and context for eight key markers of quality in qualitative systemic practitioner research. The criteria are designed for systemic practitioner researchers who are researching from the position of practitioner-at-work. The criteria include Systemic Practice, Methodology, Situatedness, Relational Ethics, Relational Aesthetics, Reflexivity, Coherence, and Contributions. They build on existing criteria for quality developed within the fields of post-positivist qualitative research and professional practice research by embedding them in systemic practice theory, activity and values. Distinctions are made between practitioner research and research about practice, and between positivist and post-positivist research. This eight-point framework brings together existing systemic methods of inquiry which recognise the importance of understanding context, movement and relational know-how. The paper proposes that systemic or relationally reflexive practice is already a form of collaborative inquiry or action research in which any action, research included, inevitably contains intention and acts as an intervention. While working with people in small and immediate systems, systemic practitioner researchers are critically reflexive in understanding how local issues are connected to wider socio-political systems and discourses.
