Such patterns are explicitly discussed in extant descriptions of some languages but mentioned only in passing or not at all for others. This survey of replacive tonal patterns seeks to offer a broad, more comprehensive picture of this phenomenon in Western Mande by discussing not only major replacive tone patterns, but also highlighting and discussing micro‑variations in these patterns across this group. In doing so, I illustrate that patterns of replacive tone generally correlate with and support the recently proposed re‑alignment of classificatory genetic sub‑groupings of these languages in Vydrin (2009a, 2016). Because Vydrin’s classification is based primarily on comparative lexicostatistics, and not on tonology, this is an interesting finding.This survey is also significant in that it reports on word‑level replacive tonal patterns in languages from each of nine well‑accepted mid‑level genetic taxa in Western Mande, which far surpasses earlier surveys that aimed to catalog and analyze this phenomenon, namely Dwyer (1973) and deZeeuw (1979).","PeriodicalId":42275,"journal":{"name":"Mandenkan-Bulletin Semestriel d Etudes Linguistiques Mande","volume":"42 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78202677","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Le mano a au moins trois varietes en Guinee et trois varietes au Liberia. L’article se focalise sur une comparaison entre le dialecte guineen central (maa) et la variete liberienne du sud, avec une information supplementaire sur d’autres varietes guineennes et liberiennes. Quelques schemas de variation en phonologie, morphosyntaxe et lexique sont presentes. L’article avance que certaines des differences dialectales en mano pourraient s’expliquer par des situations de contact differentes : alors qu’au nord, et surtout en Guinee, le mano est influence par le kpelle, qui, a son tour, a ete influence par le manding, dans le sud du Liberia, le mano est influence par le dan. Les schemas de propagation du lexique commun aux langues mano, kpelle et manding montrent une image complexe a plusieurs niveaux de contact horizontal entre mano et kpelle et entre les differents dialectes de ces langues, de contact ancien avec le manding a travers le commerce. Ils indiquent aussi et une introduction plus recente d’emprunts manding intensifee (ou motivee) par les pratiques de traduction des missionnaires guineens et limitee par les frontieres politiques entre la Guinee et le Liberia.","PeriodicalId":42275,"journal":{"name":"Mandenkan-Bulletin Semestriel d Etudes Linguistiques Mande","volume":"29 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89311943","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
